The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) is accepting applications in the visual arts category as part of its 2020 general grants program.

The program provides annual grants ranging from a few thousand U.S. dollars up to a maximum of US$50,000.

The grant supports painting, sculpting, photography, installations, audio-video arts, publications and multimedia works of a contemporary and innovative nature. The program also supports exhibitions, visual arts book publications as well as art production.

Reporting grants available [Africa, Asia, Europe]

Teams of African, Asian and European journalists can apply for a reporting grant.

Journalismfund.eu will support stories on cross-border illicit financial flows, tax abuse and corruption in Africa, Asia and Europe, as part of the Money Trail project.

The project is conducting 10 application rounds between 2018 and 2020. The total amount per call is about EUR50,000.

There is also a separate call for Dutch-speaking journalists to investigate cash flows to and from Africa or Asia that are channeled through the Netherlands.

Agência Pública offers grants for investigative reporting [Brazil]

Students in Brazil can apply for a reporting grant.

Agência Pública, a nonprofit investigative journalism agency, has launched a journalism grants contest with a focus on urban mobility, in partnership with Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS).

The contest seeks pitches for original and unpublished investigative reports in text, photo, video or infographics.

Five projects will be selected to receive BRL5,000 and mentorship from the agency. The stories will be published on the Agência Pública's website.

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is offering US$10,000 postgraduate Food and Farming Journalism Fellowships in a program established by Michael Pollan, the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley.

Suggested topics include agricultural and nutritional policy, the food industry, food science, technology and culture, rural and urban farming, agriculture and the environment, food and climate change, global trade and supply chains, consolidation and securitization of the food system and public health as it relates to food and farming.

Candidates must be available for a workshop on June 15 to 19 at UC Berkeley. Fellows will convene again for a second workshop Nov. 16 to 20. Travel and lodging for the meeting will be covered by the fellowship.

MBC AL AMAL (The hope) is accepting entries for the short film pitch competition, which will take place during the Red Sea Film Festival March 13 to 16.

Ten selected short film finalists will be invited to the festival to receive pitch training and present their ideas to experienced jurors from the industry.

The GroundTruth Project offers migration fellowship [Worldwide]

The GroundTruth Project, with support from the MacArthur Foundation and the Henry Luce Foundation, has created the GroundTruth Global Migration, Refugees and Resettlement Reporting Fellowship.

The program will select a team of fellows working across key regions, telling narrative-driven, multimedia stories of migration driven by climate change, economic and social instability, war and famine.

Society of Environmental Journalists launches journalism contest [Worldwide]

Journalists who have completed environmental reporting can submit their work.

The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) is accepting submissions for its annual recognition of excellence in environmental reporting. The awards honor journalists in 10 categories, including feature story, investigative reporting, explanatory reporting and book.

The first place and second place winners in each category will receive US$500 and US$250, respectively. The winner of the Nina Mason Pulliam Award for the "best of the best" environmental reporting will receive US$10,000.

International journalists are also encouraged to enter, but if their work is written in a language other than English, they must include an English translation with their entry.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the Howard G. Buffett Fund, which aims to support women journalists in their reporting projects and professional development opportunities.

Possible projects include exposing underreported but critical global issues; challenging traditional media narratives; developing field-based expertise and strengthening careers; pursuing training and leadership opportunities; and launching entrepreneurial news projects or acquiring the skill to do so.

The Global Youth Advancement Network at Michigan State University organizes an essay contest about inequity and ways to confront it.

Entries must be in English, have 600 to 900 words and address themes such as challenging racism, conserving the environment, educating for change and promoting gender equality.

The winner of the first prize will receive a laptop computer and a scholarship to attend the 2021 Global Youth Advancement Summit in East Lansing, Michigan.

IJP offers exchange program [Africa, Germany]

Journalists ages 25 to 40 from Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Germany can apply.

The International Journalists' Programmes (IJP) are offering fellowships to up to six young Southern African journalists and up to five young German journalists. The Southern African-German Journalists‘ Bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain insights into the political, economic, cultural and social fabric of the host country.

For two months, Southern African delegates will have the chance to work in Germany, followed by German delegates in Africa. They will be integrated into the day-to-day journalism of their host newsroom while researching stories for their home media.

The delegates will receive a fixed payment of EUR3,000 to cover most of their travel, accommodation and living expenses.

Candidates must have a strong command of English. German is an advantage but not mandatory.

Investigative journalism Conference seeks panel ideas, speakers [Brazil]

The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji, in Portuguese) invites collaborators for its annual conference on June 25 to 27 in São Paulo.

Collaborators can suggest a type of panel, propose a title and recommend themselves or others as speakers or moderators.

Media grants available [West Africa]

Local organizations based in West Africa can apply for funding.

The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) is accepting proposals to support initiatives in Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.

Possible target areas include journalism, justice reform and the rule of law, the democratic practice and more. Proposals must promote investigative journalism and free, quality and independent media.

The amount of funding varies. In the event that OSIWA cannot fund the entire project budget, it may choose to fund part of it and request the grant seeker to source for the outstanding balance.

The deadline is April 30.

Grants for Doctoral research program available [MENA]

Students can apply for this grant to pursue a doctoral degree at an accredited university in the United Arab Emirates or abroad.

The Al Qasimi Foundation's Doctoral Research Grants is accepting applications from scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields.

The grants support Ph.D. candidates in the research phase of their dissertations. Two awards are also available each year for applied research projects that have Ras Al Khaimah as a primary site for data gathering and analysis.

The foundation covers all student expenses associated with their field research in the United Arab Emirates, including return airfares, furnished accommodation for up to 12 months, a stipend to cover living costs and research support.

MLDI offers grants on digital rights advancement [Africa]

Independent media organizations, nongovernmental organizations and law centers in East, West and southern Africa can apply for this grant.

The Media Legal Defence Initiative (MLDI) offers funding for legal assistance or litigation activities that safeguard or advance media freedom.

The program aims to advance digital rights and freedom of expression online. Grants of U$20,000 will be available to to set up a media legal defense unit that provides pro bono legal support to journalists, citizen journalists and independent media.

Organizations must have a background or demonstrable interest in litigation and/or provision of legal support and  previous experience in the advancement and protection of freedom of expression in the country or region.

Film festival focuses on life with disabilities [Worldwide]

Filmmakers from around the world can submit documentaries to this international festival.

The Belgrade International Film Festival "
BOSIFEST 2020" for and by people with disabilities will take place Oct. 19 to 21 in Belgrade, Serbia. The theme of the festival is the work and life of people with disabilities.

The competition accepts documentaries up to 100 minutes long in English or with English/Serbian subtitles, produced in the last five years.

The deadline is April 24.
