The European Union (EU) is accepting proposals for the program “Support to enhance the quality of journalism in Albania.”

This initiative aims to increase the quality of media content and products that serve the public interest through the development of independent and fact-based journalism. Grants range from EUR100,000 to EUR250,000.

The call is open to radio, TV and online productions that include series of investigative articles or feature stories; new multimedia productions that use innovative digital approaches; documentaries, docudrama and TV films (one off or series); and creative, educational programs targeting youth.

Contest highlights stories on bee decline [Brazil]

Journalists and students who cover bee issues can enter this competition.

The Justice and Human Rights Movement and the Order of Lawyers of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul sectional, with the support of the Association of Graphic and Cinematographic Reporters of Rio Grande do Sul (ARFOC-RS, in Portuguese), are organizing the 36th annual Human Rights Journalism Prize in Brazil.

The aim of the competition is to encourage the work of professional journalists reporting on violations and monitoring human rights. This year's theme is "Threatened future: the death of bees."

Categories include news reporting, photography, radio, television, online journalism, editorial, documentary, book and academics. Winners typically receive trophies and diplomas.

The deadline is Nov. 22. Apply by mail or in person at ARFOC-RS.

Business journalism fellowship available [Worldwide]

Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply for a fellowship.

The McGraw Center for Business Journalism at the City University of New York's Craig Newmark School of Journalism offers a fellowship program to support in-depth coverage of business and the global economy.

The fellowship provides editorial and financial support to journalists who need the time and resources to tackle complex, time-consuming stories.

The program is accepting applications for in-depth text, video or audio pieces. Fellows will receive grants of US$5,000 a month for one to three months.

Reporters and editors working at news organizations, as well as freelancers, may apply. International journalists are also eligible as long as their reporting is completed in English and targeted to a U.S. media outlet and audience.

The application deadline is Jan. 3, 2020.

Mobile photography award seeks entries [Worldwide]

Photographers who use mobile phone cameras can submit images to a contest.

The Mobile Photography Awards is a competition and touring exhibit promoting mobile photography and art.

A grand prize winner will receive US$3,000, and the MPA Photo Essay winner will be awarded US$500.

Entries will be judged on creativity, originality and for highlighting the contest's theme - creating groundbreaking images despite the limitations of the medium.

Submission fees are US$15 for one image, US$30 for three images, US$50 for six images and US$100 for 15 images. The entry for the MPA Photo Essay is US$30.

European Press Prize accepting entries [Europe]

Journalists from the 47 countries in the Council of Europe can submit their work to this contest.

The European Press Prize is an initiative of several European organizations that aim to encourage journalism of the highest quality in the continent.

The contest will award one applicant in four categories with EUR10,000 each for work that has made a significant impact. Categories are investigative reporting, distinguished reporting, opinion and innovation. There is also the judges’ special award.

Entries must have been published online or in print in any language but include a synopsis in English. Submitted work must include a synopsis (250 words maximum) describing the theme, impact and public reception of the article(s).

Works must have been published by a European publication between Dec. 1, 2018 and Dec. 31, 2019.

The deadline is Dec. 13.

Photography grants open [Worldwide]

Photographers who work in conflict situations can apply for a grant.

The Aftermath Project is offering a US$25,000 grant for photographers who tell the other half of the story of conflict — the story of what it takes for individuals to learn to live again, to rebuild destroyed lives and homes, to restore civil societies and to address the lingering wounds of war while struggling to create new avenues for peace.

Proposals may relate to the aftermath of numerous kinds of conflict. Examples include violence between rural ethnic groups, an urban riot in an industrialized country, a rebel insurgency or full-scale war. There is no specific time frame that defines “aftermath,” although the project generally seeks to support stories that are no longer being covered by the mainstream media or which have been ignored by the media.

Entries should include an explanation of the specific aftermath issues related to the project being proposed, as well as an overview of the applicant’s plans for covering the story during the course of the grant year.

The deadline is Dec. 6.

Grants for local accountability projects availability [US]

Editors and reporters can apply for this program.

ProPublica's Local Reporting Network is accepting six additional pitches on accountability projects involving state government or state politics.

The organization will pay the salary, plus an allowance for benefits, for full-time reporters at partner news organizations who will spend one year tackling an investigative project in their states.

The reporters will report to their home newsroom, with the guidance and support from ProPublica. Their work will be published or broadcast by their home newsroom and by ProPublica as well.

Applicants must send a proposal describing an investigative project they want to pursue, the reporter who would be chosen to spearhead the work and the suggested market salary for him or her.

The deadline is Oct. 30.

DOKer film festival accepting entries [Worldwide]

Filmmakers from around the world can submit documentaries to this international festival.

The DOKer film festival seeks theatrical-style documentaries and new films that have received minimal exposure in Russia. The festival will take place June 24 to 30, 2020 in Moscow.

Competitive feature and short documentary films must have been produced after February 2019. Entries must be in English or contain English subtitles.

The festival awards prizes for entries in several categories, including feature documentary, short documentary, IT documentary and more.

The submission fees range from free for Russian films and IT documentary to EUR10 or EUR50 depending on when the film is submitted.

The regular deadline is Dec. 31. The late deadline is Feb. 15, 2020. The extended deadline is March 31, 2020.

Fellowship for democracy, development available [Worldwide]

Journalists involved in their country's economic and political development can apply for a summer fellowship at Stanford University.

The Draper Hills Summer Fellowship on Democracy and Development is a three-week program that brings together 25 to 30 midcareer professionals in the field of democracy, development and the rule of law, especially those from developing countries.

The 2020 program will take place July 12 to 31 in Stanford, California. The fellowship provides a forum for emerging leaders to connect, exchange experiences and receive academic training through seminars, academic readings and classroom-based curriculum.

The university covers travel, accommodation, living expenses and visa costs.

The deadline is Jan. 1, 2020.

FASPE Fellowship focuses on ethical leadership [Worldwide]

Graduate journalism students and recent graduates can apply for a two-week summer fellowship in Germany and Poland.

The Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) will choose 14 to 16 individuals to examine the role journalists played in Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and current issues that raise ethical concerns today.

The next journalism program will take place May 22 to June 5, 2020.

The program will address the complicity of German and foreign journalists in Nazi policies; the impact of technology on journalism; the role of journalists in electoral politics and in holding power accountable; advocacy journalism; normalizing aberrant behavior; the challenge of reporting in an era of “fake news;" and more.

Press club offers student Fellowships [US]

Graduate and undergraduate students studying in American universities and Americans studying abroad can apply for one of 16 scholarships or fellowships.

The Overseas Press Club Foundation is offering US$3,000 scholarships and funding for overseas experience.

The foundation pays travel and living expenses for interns in foreign bureaus at leading news organizations, including the Associated Press, Reuters, Bloomberg, GroundTruth Project, Wall Street Journal and Forbes and at foreign English-language media companies such as the South China Morning Post. 

Winners will also attend a reception in February 2020 in New York.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, a resume and a 500-word essay about a region or international issue on which the applicant would like to focus.

Women’s Leadership program accepting entries [Worldwide]

Women who are leading innovation in digital media are invited to apply for this free program.

The Online News Association (ONA) is accepting candidates for the Women's Leadership Accelerator.

The yearlong intensive program aims to supercharge the leadership and management skills of women. It starts with a week of mentoring, discussion and learning March 2020 in California.

The selected journalists will also receive support and coaching from ONA throughout the year and participate in a workshop at ONA’s annual conference in Atlanta.

ONA will select 26 candidates from different backgrounds. English fluency is required.

The program offers a limited number of travel stipends. For the workshop at ONA20, registration, travel to and lodging in Atlanta will be covered.

IAFOR launches photo contest [Worldwide]

Emerging documentary photographers and photojournalists can enter this contest.

The IAFOR Documentary Photography Award, established by the International Academic Forum (IAFOR), is accepting entries on the theme “Reclaiming the future.”

Most of the images should explore challenges in the 21st century and have been made during 2018-2019. Images taken earlier than 2018 may be allowed if they are part of a photo-essay. Contestants must be 30 years old or younger or enrolled in part-time or full-time education.

The first place winner typically receives GBP1,000 (US$1,230), a grant and a scholarship to attend the IAFOR conference and other prizes. There are also prizes for second and third place winners and honorable mentions.

The deadline is Nov. 25.
