Kavli Foundation organises science journalism competition [Worldwide]

Science journalists are eligible for this award.

The AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards, organized by the Kavli Foundation, recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals for coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics.

The categories are large newspaper, small newspaper, magazine, audio, video spot news/feature reporting, video in-depth reporting, online and children's science news.

Entries must have been published, broadcast or posted online between July 16, 2018 through July 15, 2019. Works in a language other than English must include an English translation.

There will be two awards for each category, a Gold award worth US$5,000 and a Silver award worth US$3,500. One winner for each award in each category will also receive reasonable travel expenses to attend an awards ceremony in February 2020 at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Seattle.

The deadline is Aug. 1.

International seminar for journalists available [Eastern Europe]

Journalists ages 16 to 35 who live in Council of Europe Member states, Belarus or Kosovo can apply for this seminar.

The Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe is organizing the international seminar "Critical journalism in digital era: youth’s access to non-biased information" July 2 to 7 in Georgia.

The project will explore topics of digital rights, youth’s participation on the internet and new online tools on how to strengthen communication with the online public.

The sessions will include theoretical inputs, work in small groups, workshops, discussions, training and other interactive methods of non-formal learning.

The organizers will provide working materials, visa, accommodation and food during the event and pay 80 to 90 percent of travel cost. The participating fee varies from EUR20 to EUR50 depending on the country. Applicants for whom paying this fee is an obstacle for participation should apply and mention this issue in their application.

Scholarships available for audio storytelling workshop [US]

Aspiring radio producers can apply for a scholarship to attend this training.

Transom, a platform for new public radio, will host its Fall 2019 Story Workshop Sept. 24 to Nov. 21 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

During the residential program, participants will produce a vox-pop audio piece, a radio promo, a profile of a creative person, based on WCAI’s Ways of Life Series, a documentary feature; and one or more Sonic IDs.

The cost ranges from US$9,105 to US$9,780, depending on housing. Scholarships will be available based on financial need, with a focus on diverse voices.

Mophradat offers Travel fellowship [MENA]

Journalists, curators and researchers can apply for this fellowship in India.

Mophradat is accepting applications for the Orbitals fellowship, which takes three to four curators to an international location to meet and share their experiences with peers.

The next trip will take place Oct 12 to 23. The curators will travel first together to New Delhi, visiting artists and curators as well as local art institutions and initiatives. Next, the group with travel by train for a two-day seminar in Chandigarh, bringing them to the city’s main architectural sites to explore this renowned modernist urban model, and how it relates to and influences contemporary cultural production.

Mophradat will cover airfare, insurance, accommodations, a per diem and visa costs.

Candidates must have at least three years of experience in a field of contemporary art, work in the nonprofit/non-commercial sector and demonstrate prior experience working on international projects, exchange, or collaboration in their home country or abroad.

ONA launch Awards for online journalists [Worldwide]

Online journalists, digital news organizations and students worldwide can apply for an award.

The Online News Association (ONA) is accepting entries for the 2019 Online Journalism Awards recognizing excellence in digital reporting.

Award categories include data journalism, visual digital storytelling, investigative journalism to public service, technical innovation, general excellence and more. This year features two new categories: excellence in engaged journalism and digital video storytelling.

The awards offer a total of US$58,500 in prize money, courtesy of the Knight Foundation, the Gannett Foundation, Journalism 360 and the University of Florida.

Awards will be given at the Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet Sept. 12 to 14 in New Orleans. The OJAs, launched in 2000, are a comprehensive set of journalism prizes honoring excellence in digital journalism. You can view a list of the 2018 winners here.

Entries must have published between June 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019.  Although English translations are strongly recommended, works may be submitted in any language.

The deadline is June 6. The entry fee is US$100 for ONA members, US$175 for non-members, US$15 for student members and US$50 for student non-members.

Reporting fellowship available [US]

U.S.-based journalists can apply for a fellowship to conduct a reporting project abroad.

Sponsored by the John Alexander Project and NPR, the Above the Fray Fellowship is designed to give a promising journalist the opportunity to cover important underreported stories from abroad.

The selected individual will spend three months filing on-air and online stories for NPR.

Applicants should combine the depth of traditional journalists with the technical innovation of new media and have between three and five years of professional experience.

Free Press Awards accepting nominations [Worldwide]

Journalists who have a strong commitment to press freedom and independent information can compete for an award.

Free Press Unlimited, a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands, is accepting nominations for the Free Press Awards.

The awards aim to honor journalists who risk everything to bring the news to the public, media pioneers who pave the way for equality and justice and those who persevere under the most difficult circumstances.

The categories are newcomer of the year and most resilient journalist of the year.

Prizes include a media scholarship for the newcomer of the year and EUR15,000 (US$16,770) for the most resilient journalist. Both winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Netherlands.

Workshops focuses on feature writing [Chile]

Anyone interested in feature writing can apply for this free, eight-session workshop.

The Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM), in partnership with the Humanities Center from the Diego Portales University, organizes this workshop on Thursdays from May 23 to July 11 in Santiago.

Participants will read and analyze texts that exemplify feature writing, and write stories that will be critiqued in subsequent workshop sessions.

The instructor is Roberto Merino, an award-winning writer and journalist.

UONGOZI Institute seeks entries on Leadership, sustainable development [Africa]

African citizens ages 18 to 25 are invited to enter this contest.

The UONGOZI Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development is accepting entries for its annual Leadership Essay Competition.

This year, contestants must write about their perspective on leadership as it relates to sustainable development in Africa, answering the question: “If you were an African leader, how would you promote sustainable use of the renewable natural resources for fostering socio-economic transformation in Africa?”

Essays must be written in English.

The top five winners will receive cash prizes. The overall winner will be awarded US$2,000. They will travel to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to receive their awards at a ceremony to be held during the Africa Leadership Forum Dinner Gala on Aug. 29.

Contest for social justice journalism open [US]

Journalists whose projects reflect a concern for social justice can apply for this award.

The Richard J. Margolis Award is given annually to a journalist or essayist who has combined humor and wisdom to address social issues.

The winner will receive a US$5,000 prize, along with a one-month residency at Blue Mountain Center, a writers and artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, New York.

The award was created by family and friends of Richard J. Margolis, a journalist, essayist and poet who brought light to hardships faced by subgroups including migrant farm workers, the elderly and Native Americans.

Journalism grant available for covering migration and misinformation [Latin America]

Journalists or groups of journalists in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela and who have set up a cross-border collaboration team can apply for this opportunity.

The Gabriel García Márquez Foundation for a New Iberoamerican Journalism (FNPI) and Oxfam offer a journalism grant for covering migration and disinformation.

The program will support a cross-border collaboration between two or more media outlets in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and/or Venezuela to undertake an investigation into how misinformation and false information has spread regarding migration processes. The winning team will receive up to US$7,000 to cover their expenses and fees.

Interested teams must submit a research proposal, a budget and a general timetable, as well as a letter of support from the media involved.

Training on web writing available [Latin America]

Media professionals and students can register for this online course in Spanish.

The Center for Training in Digital Journalism at the University of Guadalajara organizes a course on how to write, structure and optimize online content.

Journalist Brisa Barbosa will lead the program, which will run from June 17 to July 21. The estimated time for the course is eight to 12 hours a week.

The deadline to register is June 2. The cost is MXN1,800 for Mexican residents and US$90 for foreigners.

Contest highlights audio documentaries, stories [Worldwide]

Audio stories, including podcasts and radio features, are eligible for a prize.

The Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition will honor the best audio work produced worldwide between January 2018 and May 28, 2019.

The categories are serialized story, documentary, directors' choice, new artist, radio impact, news feature and the Skylarking Award. There is also a best documentary category for work produced in a language other than English.

Entries must range between 3 and 60 minutes in length, with the exception of news feature submissions, which cannot exceed 12 minutes.

Winners will receive US$1,500 to US$3,000 prizes, a license for Hindenburg Journalist Pro editing software and two free passes to the Third Coast Festival Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 in Chicago.

The deadline is June 18. The application fee costs US$35 to US$200. Register by May 28 to receive the discount rate.

Banff Centre offers scholarships for investigative journalism [US, Canada]

The Banff Centre is organizing the Investigative Journalism Intensive Sept. 23 to Oct. 2 in Banff, Alberta.

The program features interactive seminars and workshops, where participants will learn to identify research sources, mine the necessary information and turn data and interviews into engaging narratives.

Centre for Media Studies offers training for Investigative journalists [Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia]

Journalists from the Baltic and EU Eastern Partnership countries can apply for a scholarship to participate in this program.

The Summer School on Investigative Reporting, organized by the Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga, will take place Aug. 14 to 17 in Riga, Latvia.

The first two days of the program will focus on the needs of editors. The remaining days will feature presentations on radio or podcast, visual aspects of reporting, corruption, organized crime, internet research and more.

The keynote speaker of the school is Carole Cadwalladr, the reporter who broke the Cambridge Analytical scandal.

There will be also a pre-seminar that will take place Aug. 13.

The registration fee is EUR350.

Participants from the Baltic and EU Eastern Partnership are eligible for a scholarship provided by the Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation, which includes the registration fee and accommodation.
