Journalists from countries in crisis or war can apply to stay in Berlin for three months. 

Reporters Without Borders Germany, in cooperation with taz Panter Foundation, will host three journalists in 2021.

The Rest and Refuge Scholarship will provide travel, an apartment, a living stipend and transportation in Berlin.

Participants must be able to communicate in basic English or German. They must have the intention to return to their country after the fellowship.

Online Course on harassment available [Worldwide]

Women journalists and their allies can enroll in this online course.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, through its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), hosts the free course "Online harassment: strategies for journalists’ defense" Nov. 16 to Dec. 13 in partnership with the International Women's Media Foundation.

The training features four modules including an introduction to online harassment, understanding privacy, trolls and their strategies, and digital security steps to counter online harassment.

The instructor are Arzu Geybulla, Catherine Gicheru, Ela Stapley and Myra Abdallah.

The course is accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Participants may complete the weekly activities at their own pace. Anyone who wants to receive a certificate must pay a US$30 administrative fee.

CUNY offers training on product immersion for small newsrooms [Americas]

Journalists from small to midsize local newsrooms can apply for this free program. 

News Catalyst and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, in partnership with the Google News Initiative, are offering an intensive online training in digital transformation through product thinking.

The training will take place Jan. 23 to March 20, 2021 and be conducted in English. Participants will cover every phase of product development and management in a news setting. 

This round is accepting participants from North, Central and South America. Students are expected to commit about four hours a week to the training.

Video competition accepting entries [Central Asia]

Professional and amateur videographers can register for this contest.

The Prague Civil Society Centre is accepting applications for the second round of the Central Asia Video Accelerator, a caption video competition. 

Videos must be 90 seconds to 4 minutes long; made in Central Asia in the format of a caption video, where the story is told not just through visuals but also through narration captions, and must tell a story of someone who is changing the world for the better. 

Possible languages are the official languages of Central Asia's countries, Russian and English.

Authors of all videos that attract 3,500 or more views in two weeks after publication on social media will receive a prize of EUR50.

ACSS grants focuses on Health [MENA]

Journalists, researchers and activists whose work focuses on Arab societies can apply for this program. 

Funded by the Ford Foundation and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is accepting submissions for its grants program on the theme of "Health and livelihoods in the Arab region: wellbeing, vulnerability and conflict."

Grants of US$20,000 will be available to individual researchers, up to US$35,000 for teams of researchers and US$50,000 for institutions.

Grants are intended to support a maximum of 18 months for individuals and teams from June 1, 2021 to Nov. 30, 2021, and a maximum of 24 months for collectives and institutions starting June 2021 to May 2023.


The deadline is Dec. 8.

Reuters is looking for reporters who are experienced translators.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is organizing the Trust Conference at 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. GMT on Nov. 11.

The event will feature panel discussions, side sessions, speaker spotlights, documentaries and networking opportunities.

Participants from around the world will discuss the effects of the pandemic on economic inequalities, threats to media freedom and plans for protecting and promoting human rights after the pandemic.

Grant available for young journalists [Francophone countries]

French-speaking journalists and photojournalists with a story idea can apply for this grant.

GEO magazine offers a EUR5,000 grant for reporters and photojournalists ages 30 or younger in 2021 to help them on a reporting project to be published in French in GEO's print and web editions.

Candidates must submit proposals that fit into GEO's editorial line: exploration of new territories, the environment, people and society, geopolitics and more.

The winner will be announced in GEO's March 2021 edition. The chosen article will be produced during the course of 2021.

Journalism fellowships available [US]


Recent graduates interested in public radio journalism can apply for a one-year fellowship with National Public Radio (NPR).

The NPR Kroc Fellowship will train three fellows in public radio journalism - writing, reporting, producing and editing, for both radio and the web.

Fellows will receive a US$45,000 stipend, benefits and a paid vacation. Fellowships will be primarily based at NPR's Washington headquarters, but may also include an assignment at a member station.

Applications are open to students who have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree on or after Jan. 1, 2020 or who expect to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree by the spring of 2021 before the fellowship begins in August 2021.

Journalism or radio experience is not required. Foreign nationals interested in applying must have the necessary employment authorization.

Stanley Center accepting pitches [Worldwide]

Freelance journalists, photographers and authors can apply for this project. 

The Stanley Center for Peace and Security is commissioning multimedia content on the coronavirus pandemic and the factors for risk and resilience to mass violence and atrocities.

The project is looking for investigative or commentary pieces ideally between 800 and 1,500 words. Photo essays don't have to follow these word requirements.

Pitches should use the UN’s Framework of Analysis for Atrocity Crimes and Alex Bellamy’s five factors for strengthening resilience as lenses of analysis.

Authors from underrepresented groups or regions are encouraged to apply. Accepted submissions will be paid a competitive rate.

The Rio de Janeiro Institute of Technology and Society (ITS, in Portuguese) and Redes Cordiais, with the support of the Facebook Journalism Project, has launched the online education platform "New routines for credible journalism."

The platform offers five modules with the goal of training journalism professionals to make the best use of social media and reduce potential negative impacts resulting from internet exposure.

The modules cover topics such as skills for journalists' future, covering complex events in the digital age, "how to respond to attacks and online harassment, online security and privacy for journalists, and mental health for journalists.

The Membership Puzzle Project, in partnership with Luminate, is reopening The Membership in News Fund. The initiative seeks to catalyze membership design in newsrooms around the world.

The US$400,000 fund will support proposals that aim to build strong relationships with their audience members and help drive greater sustainability and impact.

News organizations must be based in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa or Asia. The maximum award per proposal is US$40,000 .

goEast Film festival accepting entries [Central, Eastern Europe]

Filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe can participate in this festival.

The goEast Film Festival, organized by the German Film Institute, will take place April 20 to 26, 2021 in Wiesbaden, Germany.

The festival showcases documentary and feature films created in 2020 and 2021 in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Films can be in any language but must include English subtitles.

The first prize winner will receive EUR10,000. Other categories include a EUR7,500 prize for best director and the Award of the Federal Foreign Office for Cultural Diversity, worth EUR4,000.
