Africa-China Reporting Project organises wildlife poaching, trafficking workshop [Southern Africa]

Journalists who report on wildlife poaching and trafficking from countries in Southern Africa can apply for this training

The Africa-China Reporting Project at Wits Journalism in partnership with Khetha (WWF) and VukaNow (USAID), is organizing the Wildlife Poaching & Trafficking Journalism Training Workshop early July in Johannesburg.

Topics include investigative reporting techniques, the trafficking supply chain to and demand in Asia, and innovative methods for community and public engagement in understanding and fighting wildlife poaching and trafficking.

Preference will be given to applicants with story proposals on community development and innovative solutions regarding the poaching of rhinos and elephants.

Selected journalists will receive a reporting grant to conduct an investigation after the workshop. They will also be invited to present their work at the Africa-China Journalists Forum at the African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University in October.

Women's peace and humanitarian fund available [Jordan]

Civil society organizations working in the areas of media, women, community development, rule of law and human rights are eligible to apply.

The Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) has launched its second call for proposals in Jordan.

Projects must advance the Government of Jordan’s humanitarian, resilience and sustainable development priorities.

Grants range between US$100,000 and US$200,000.

Applications in Arabic and English languages will be accepted. The maximum project duration is two years.

Khaled Alkhateb Memorial Awards offers conflict reporting contest [Worldwide]

Journalists reporting in conflict zones can be nominated for an award.

The Khaled Alkhateb Memorial Awards for Best Journalism from a Conflict Zone will honor the work of media professionals and organizations who strive to shed light on the complexities and ramifications of continuous war and armed conflict.

The awards were established by RT’s editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan in memory of independent war correspondent Khaled Alkhateb, who was killed by an ISIS shell in 2017 in Syria.

The contest has three categories: short film, feature film and written report. Works must have been published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2018 and May 1, 2019. Entries must be submitted with an English translation or subtitles.

The winners will be announced on July 30.

The deadline is June 10.

Writing fellowship available [US]

Beginner journalists interested in politics, policy and digital journalism can apply for this fellowship in Washington.

The American Prospect is offering the Writing Fellows Program, an opportunity for journalists at the beginning of their career to spend two years at the magazine developing their journalistic skills. The fellowship will take place September 2019 to 2011.

Ideal candidates will have strong writing and analytical abilities and be as comfortable generating article ideas as they are relying on assignments. A passion for politics, policy and digital journalism is a prerequisite. Prior journalism experience is not required. People of color and women are strongly encouraged to apply.

The fellowship pays US$38,000 a year and includes health, dental and vision benefits.
