International Committee of the Red Cross seeks reports on humanitarian issues [Brazil]

Print, broadcast and multimedia journalists can apply for this award.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Brazil invites entries to the fourth edition of the ICRC Humanitarian Coverage Award. The goal is to encourage the production of quality journalistic content on humanitarian issues in the Brazilian press.

Works must address international humanitarian issues, with a focus on victims, and have been published between Aug. 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2020.

In addition to the news reports and documentaries category, this year's competition will feature the special category "United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) 70 years," for news or documentary content focusing exclusively on themes related to refugees and statelessness.

The first place winner in the news reports and documentaries category will travel to an international location where the ICRC operates or receive a cash prize if travel is not recommended because of the pandemic. The second and third place winners will receive a cash prize. The winner in the special category will travel to a Brazilian region where the ICRC operates or receive a cash prize.

Folha de Jornalismo offers training for young journalists on urban mobility [Brazil]

Recent journalism graduates and college seniors can apply for this free online training.

Startup 99 and Folha de S. Paulo organize Lab 99 + Folha de Jornalismo over two weekends in August.

Under the theme of overcoming urban inequalities, the training features classes on urban and city mobility, news techniques, writing and TV production for digital channels.

At the end of the course, participants will produce content under the supervision of Folha journalists. The top three stories will receive BRL5,000, BRL2,000 and BRL3,000, as part of the 99 Journalism Award.

Uganda Press Photo Award seeks entries [East Africa]

Visual storytellers in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda can compete for an award.

The Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) is accepting entries. The contest has six categories: news, daily life, environment, people, sports and urban. 

The contest includes the East African Photography Award (EAPA), which is open to citizens of  Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

There is also the Young Photographer Award (YPA) for Ugandan citizens ages 21 to 28.

The winners will receive Canon equipment and other prizes, including opportunities to showcase their work and mentorship for the young photographer awardee.

The competition is run by the FOTEA Foundation, in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Uganda, Canon Central and North Africa and others.

The deadline is Aug. 1.

Fact-Checking Innovation grant available [Worldwide]

Fact-checking organizations that are verified signatories of the IFCN’s Code of Principles and/or organizations that have been regularly publishing non-partisan fact checks over the last three months can apply.

The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) and Facebook have launched the second round of the Fact-Checking Innovation Initiative, focusing on technology innovation and development.

The initiative offers grants of up to US$100,000  to support projects aimed at strengthening fact-checking and the fight against misinformation.

Applicants that are not fact-checking organizations but partnering with fact-checking organizations are also eligible.

French-speaking journalists with at least three years of experience can apply for this position in Baie-Comeau.

CBC/Radio Canada is looking for a video journalist for its North Shore station to cover Eastern Quebec news.

Responsibilities include researching, gathering, packaging and presenting material for the station's programs. The position entails editing video and covering stories for the station's radio and digital platforms.

Candidates must have strong storytelling and interviewing skills, as well as a good on-air presence. A valid driver’s license is required.

Kamal Adham Center offers Journalism fellowship [MENA]

Students across the Arab world can apply for this fellowship to pursue a master's degree in television and digital journalism.

The Kamal Adham Center is accepting applications for its fellowship at the American University in Cairo.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent. They must also demonstrate financial need.

The fellowship covers tuition fees for a maximum of nine credits per semester, book allowance and student services and activities fees.

Preference is given to graduates of Egyptian public universities and professionals in the broadcasting industry.

NED offers Fellowship open [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide who wish to learn more about democracy can apply for a fellowship.

The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program, organized by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), aims to enable democratic practitioners, scholars and journalists to deepen their understanding of democracy and enhance their ability to promote democratic change.

Fellows are expected to be in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington March 1 to July 31, 2021 or Oct. 1, 2021 to Feb. 28, 2022. Working knowledge of English is required to be eligible.

Each fellow receives a monthly stipend for living expenses, plus health insurance and reimbursement for travel.

Photojournalism grant available [US]

Freelance photojournalists based in the United States can apply for this visual reporting grant.

The Pulitzer Center and Diversify Photo have launched the Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant.

The reporting initiative aims to support underreported stories told by visual journalists historically underrepresented in the American press.

Proposals should cover U.S. systemic, underreported issues, such as police brutality, the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, environmental racism, food insecurity, the opioid crisis and more.

Grantees will receive US$1,000.

Anagrama Award focuses on narrative journalism [Latin America, Spain]

Nonfiction authors can submit their books in Spanish to this international contest.

Anagrama publishing house hosts the 2020 edition of the Anagrama Nonfiction Award Sergio González Rodríguez.

Contestants must submit a single narrative journalism piece or a set of stories of at least 100 pages.

The winning book will be published in Anagrama's "Crónicas" collection and receive EUR10,000 (US$11,242) in advance against royalties.

Vacancy: Le Figaro seeks video journalist [France]

Broadcast journalists can apply for this position in Paris.

Le Figaro is looking for a journalist for the morning show of its broadcast service Figaro Live starting Aug. 4.

Responsibilities include news monitoring, attending the morning editorial conferences and producing videos, photos and animations as well as managing a student journalist. The selected journalist will report to the editors-in-chief and desk editor.

Candidates must be proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop. The position may include some shooting in the newsroom but no field reporting.

Depending on the evolution of the current health crisis, the position may be remote over the summer.
