Training for young film critics offered [Worldwide]

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) seeks applicants for its training program Jan. 24 to Feb. 4, 2018. The IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics offers motivated and talented journalists a chance to cover a major international film festival.
The program includes reporting on the festival for the Daily Tiger, publishing a blog on IFFR's website, meeting with experienced film critics and reporting for participants' home media outlets.
The organizers will cover hotel accommodations and partial refunds of travel costs when participants are traveling from outside Europe.
Candidates must have fluent written and spoken English, and should not be established critics. They should be affiliated with a print or online media outlet to report on the festival. Up to four journalists from outside Netherlands will be chosen to attend.
The application deadline is Nov. 1.

Chicas Poderosas hosts Design Sprint Weekend [Brazil]

Chicas Poderosas will host Design Sprint Weekends Oct. 14 and 15 in Manaus, Oct. 28 and 29 in Recife and Nov. 4 and 5 in São Paulo.
The program, led by IDEO master trainers, will teach participants how to use human centered design in their independent media project and will prepare them to apply for the New Ventures Lab (NVL) -- a 17-week accelerator program that will provide education, mentorship and access to financing opportunities.

Internews' Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is hiring a content coordinator.
The content coordinator will play a lead role in EJN's editorial, capacity building and networking activities. He or she will build content for its online platforms and geographies, mentor local journalists, represent EJN in local forums and communities, and participate in the selection of beneficiaries for EJN activities and funds.
Candidates must have proven organization and administrative skills, fluency in written and spoken English and a strong background in environmental research and policy.

Travel grants available for World Science Forum in Jordan [Worldwide]

The World Science Forum, organized by the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan in partnership with UNESCO and others, will take place Nov. 7 to 11 in Sweimeh, Jordan. 
The event will offer a platform whereby journalists can connect with speakers and delegates to discuss and report on the latest scientific, policy and civil society developments worldwide.
Twenty-five international journalists will be selected for a conference grant. Participants will receive free registration, accommodation, onsite catering, access to all programs and other activities, and up to EUR350 (US$420) travel stipend.
The deadline is Sept. 22.

Writing residency accepting applicants [US]

The Mesa Refuge, located in Point Reyes Station, California, provides time, space and solitude for writers to delve into their work. Topics related to nature, the human economy and social equity receive priority.
The next sessions available are March 23 to April 5; April 6 to 19; April 20 to May 3; and May 4 to 17.
Room and most dinners are provided at no cost, but participants must pay for their own travel.
The deadline is Dec. 1. There is a US$40 application fee.
