EU journalism award seeks entries [Georgia]

Georgian journalists from print, broadcast and online media are eligible.

The EU Prize for Journalism recognizes the work of journalists who have demonstrated integrity and professionalism in Georgia.

Entries can be submitted for one of the following categories: story in print or online media; feature story in broadcast or online media; innovative and original piece of work in print, broadcast or online media; investigative story in print, online or broadcast media; online or print blog; documentary photo; and conflict-sensitive journalistic work (the EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism).

Works must have been published, broadcast or posted between Nov. 2, 2018 and Oct. 15, 2019. Entries must be in Georgian, Russian or English. Entries for the EUMM Special Prize for the Peace Journalism category may also be submitted in Abkhaz and Ossetian.

The winner of each category will receive EUR1,250. The winner of the EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism will receive a monthlong fellowship at the London office of the Institute for War & Peace Reporting.

The deadline is Oct. 15.

Free Speech and Open Government Award seeks nominees [US]

Journalists, bloggers, lawyers, news organizations, software developers and community activists can apply for this award.

The First Amendment Coalition (FAC) is accepting nominees for its
Free Speech and Open Government Award. The award seeks to highlight exemplary work in the arena of open government.

Applicants must advance government transparency. Works may cover access to public meetings, public records, the courts, government data; defense of citizens’ right to speak; defense of journalists’ rights; defense of the right to “blow the whistle” and alert the public to government misconduct; and others.

Winners will receive a US$1,000 cash prize to be presented at the Annual Winter Meeting of the California Press Foundation on Dec. 5 in San Francisco.

The deadline is Nov. 1. Self-nominations are accepted.

Climate reporting fellowships available [Worldwide]

Journalists ages 18 to 32 are invited to enter this contest for a chance to win a fully-funded trip.

Climate Tracker is accepting candidates for a reporting fellowship to cover the Climate Negotiations Nov. 29 to Dec.14 in Santiago, Chile.

Contestants must publish a story, photo series or video about stopping a fossil fuel project in their country.

Entries can be in any language and must appear on a national media, a platform like Medium or social media.

The deadline to publish and submit an article is Sept. 27

The Labor Justice journalism Prize seeks entries [Brazil]

Journalists in Brazil can compete for this new award.

The Labor Justice Prize for Journalism, organized by Brazil's Superior Labor Court (TST, in Portuguese), aims to foster reporting that brings awareness to labor issues.

This year's contest will focus on strategies to fight child labor. Works must have been published between March 1, 2018 and Aug. 30, 2019 in Portuguese.

The categories are print journalism, radio journalism, television journalism, web journalism and photojournalism. The winners in each category will receive BRL10,000.

The deadline is Sept. 16.

Arab Media & Society calls for papers on science journalism [MENA]

Journalists, academics and students from the Arab world are invited to submit their papers.

Arab Media & Society, the biannual journal of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism at the American University in Cairo, is seeking submissions for its next issue on science journalism.

Topics may relate to science journalism education in the Arab world, ethics and bias in science journalism, professional approaches and evolution of science journalism in the digital age.

Although shorter pieces are encouraged, submissions may have up to 10,000 words and must conform to The Chicago Manual of Style.

The deadline for peer-review consideration is Sept. 15. All other submissions, including books and conference reviews, shorter research papers and columns, should be received by Sept. 30.

Journalism Seminar seeks applications [Asia, Europe]

The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is organizing the 12th ASEF Journalists’ Seminar, in conjunction with the 14th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM FMM13) Dec. 13 and 14 in Madrid.

The seminar will focus on media trust and information, providing journalists with the tools needed to tackle disinformation in the digital age.

Applicants must be from ASEM partner countries and have an excellent command of English.

Selected participants receive accommodation, meals and a travel subsidy.

CUNY offers Resilience journalism fellowship (Worldwide)

 Midcareer journalists interested in climate change reporting can apply for this program.

CUNY's Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism is organizing the Resilience Journalism Fellowship Oct. 26 to Nov. 1 in New York.

The program will focus on the science of climate change and resilience. In addition to classroom training, fellows will hike in the mountains of the Adirondack Park, learning how resilience plays out in the rural landscape.

Fellows will receive lodging, tuition and reasonable travel costs, along with most meals.

CineFest seeks documentaries entries for Film festival [Brazil]

Documentary, fiction, animation and musical short films can compete for cash prizes.

CineFest will take place Nov. 18 to 30 in Votorantim, São Paulo.

Films must be no longer than 20 minutes and have been produced in 2017 or later on any theme.

A jury will select the best short films for the national, regional, environmental, parallel and musical exhibits. The winners of each exhibit will receive BRL3,000.

Rainforest Journalism Fund: Job opportunities exist for Coordinators [Africa, Asia]

Journalists with at least 10 years of experience can apply for these part-time positions.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is looking for regional coordinators for the Rainforest Journalism Fund in the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia.

Responsibilities include helping to identify regional and local news outlets that the Center will partner; conducting a baseline survey of coverage of tropical rainforest issues; promoting the grant opportunities through direct outreach; translating communications for dissemination in the media; and more.

Candidates must have an established network of contacts in the region and a strong knowledge of environmental, political, social and health issues related to tropical rainforests. Fluency in English and a local/regional language is also required.
