World Nomads offers writing Scholarships [Worldwide]

Students and nonprofessional writers can apply for a scholarship.

World Nomads is accepting applications for its travel writing scholarships. Three aspiring writers will win a 14-day travel writing trip in August in Portugal.

The winners will attend a four-day workshop led by The New York Times and Outside magazine contributor Tim Neville. They will then travel to multiple destinations alone and document their trips.

The scholarships will cover airfare, accommodations, rail pass and travel insurance. Each writer will also receive US$1,000 and a portfolio review from Norie Quintos.

Individuals from any nationality can apply, but interested applicants should have exceptional written English skills.

The deadline to apply is March 13.

Vermont Law School offers media fellowships [US]

Online, print and broadcast journalists who cover the environment can apply for a fellowship in South Royalton, Vermont.

Vermont Law School (VLS) is accepting applications for its 2019 Summer Media Fellowships.

Selected journalists participate in VLS's Summer Session, during which internationally recognized scholars and leaders in environmental law and policy gather to share their expertise.

Featured courses include ethics and environmental justice, food and agriculture, energy, environmental business and more.

Fellows receive a US$1,250 stipend, free housing, free books and a tuition waiver.

Summer school for journalists accepting applications [Russia]

Young journalists, media activists and bloggers fluent in Russian can apply for this fully funded multidisciplinary summer program.

The Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom is organizing a Summer School of Journalism and Cultural Studies, which will take place July 15 to Aug. 2 at Charles University in Prague.

The school features lectures and master classes, case studies and more. Topics cover online content distribution, video shooting and editing, infographic and audio recording.

Applicants must submit a proposal for a media project in online or video format that addresses important political, economic, social or cultural issues.

The program covers accommodations, travel expenses and meals.

The deadline is March 31.

Photo contest on sustainable development goals available [MENA]

Professional and amateur photographers are invited to apply for this contest.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is accepting entries for the "Best photos about sustainable development in the Arab region.”

The contest aims to encourage photographers to capture sustainable development initiatives across Arab countries and highlight the region’s efforts to reach sustainable development goals.

Applicants should submit up to 20 photos related to one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, covering poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice. 

The first three winners will be awarded a certificate from ESCWA.

Masterclass covers disruptive design method for climate solution reporting [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in the disruptive design method can apply for this training.

The Solution Hack for Journalists, organized by The Lookout Station in partnership with Disrupt Design and others, will take place March 26 and 27 in Helsinki, Finland.

This session's theme is "Building a sustainable future: in depth in Finland," which will explore the Finnish model of sustainability and also offer training on the Disruptive Design Method (DDM), a new method for journalistic research and reporting.

The organizer will provide most meals and transportation, as well as flights and accommodation for those based outside of Helsinki.

Training on 2020 Census reporting approaching deadline [US]

Journalists planning to cover the 2020 Census can apply for this free training.

Poynter is organizing "Covering the 2020 Census " March 4 and 5 in Washington and March 17 to 19 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

This program aims to provide journalists with the sources, background, context and data skills they need to cover how the U.S. government counts its residents.

The instructors are D’Vera Cohn, a senior writer and editor focusing on immigration and demographics at Pew Research Center, and Paul Overberg, reporter for The Wall Street Journal.

There are limited travel scholarships available for both workshops. Applicants must apply to only one workshop.

Contest recognises stories on automotive sector [Brazil]

Journalists can submit stories in Portuguese and English to this award.

The Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering organizes the AEA Environment Award, featuring a category for journalists.

The contest recognizes stories that have demonstrated the improvements implemented by the automotive sector, which will benefit or have benefited the environment.

The first place winner will receive the AEA Environment Award. The second and third place winners will receive honorable mentions.

Film festival seeks entries [Africa]

African filmmakers can present their films for screening.

The Rwanda Film Festival (RFF), also known as “Hillywood,” organized by the Rwanda Cinema Centre (RCC) in collaboration with the Kwetu Film Institute, will take place Aug. 17 to 25 in Kigali.

The festival is seeking films in any genre, length and language, including documentaries. There is also an award for new technologies and TV production, highlighting web series, virtual reality, 3D and more.

Works must have been produced in the last two years.

The entry deadline is May 1.

Workshop on migration coverage available [Latin America]

Journalists residing in Latin America can apply for this workshop in Spanish.

The Gabriel García Márquez Foundation for a New Ibero American Journalism (FNPI, in Spanish) organizes the workshop on migration reporting with María Teresa Ronderos April 4 to 8 in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Fourteen journalists will be selected to learn tools and storytelling techniques to address migratory flows in the region. Some of the topics are how to define a theme and focus, how to find sources, the potential challenges while reporting in the field and more.

The cost of the workshop is US$250. Selected participants outside Cuernavaca will receive roundtrip tickets, accommodation, international medical insurance and some meals.
