Eyebeam Center offers grants for artist-journalist teams [Worldwide]

Artist-journalist teams producing innovative journalistic work can apply for a grant.

The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism (ECFJ), underwritten by Craig Newmark Philanthropies, offers grants ranging from US$500 to US$5,000 to facilitate artists’ major media commissions in the realm of journalism.

The grant is open to longer-term, research-intensive projects in text, photography, audio and video. Possible topics include data privacy, 2018/2020 elections, the role of technology in society, political influence campaigns, interrogating harmful technologies, countering disinformation and artificial Intelligence.

U.S. and international applicants are welcome, but applications must be in English.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Contest seeks digital innovations [Middle East, Africa, Turkey]

News organizations in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey can apply for funding.

The Google News Initiative organizes the first GNI Innovation Challenge in the region, which will support projects that drive digital innovation, focusing on reader engagement and new business models in any form.

Selected projects will receive up to US$150,000 and up to 70% of the total project cost.

Successful projects must be delivered within one year.

Piauí CBN Marathon hosts Podcasting conference [Brazil]

Journalists, students and others interested in podcasting are invited to this event.

The Piauí CBN Marathon, sponsored by Google News Initiative, will take place on Aug. 17 in São Paulo.

The event aims to bring together the most renowned podcast producers in Brazil. The daylong program features five tables on journalism podcasts, themes and tribes, betting on podcast and more.

The total cost is BRL250. Piauí magazine subscribers, students and teachers pay half price.

Alexander VON Humboldt Institute offers Internet Fellowship [Worldwide]

Early and advanced researchers who focus on internet issues can apply for this fellowship in Berlin.

The Alexander  VON Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society is accepting candidates for the Internet and Society Fellowship 2020 program.

Possible topics of research include the evolving digital society; data, actors and infrastructure; knowledge and society; and innovation and entrepreneurship.

Fellows may spend three to 12 months participating in the activities at the institute and collaborating with an international team of researchers. However, they must cover their own costs.

A limited number of travel grants and visa subsidies are available.
