IPC CONDEMNS ATTACK ON BAYELSA BLOGGER

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria condemns the recent attack on Saint Mienpamo who was physically assaulted and abducted by suspected militants in Bayelsa on May 29, 2018.

According to Sahara Reporters Saint Mienpamo a blogger and former Senior Special Assistant to Bayelsa State Government was physically assaulted and abducted by suspected militants accompanied by police officers at about 6:30am in his residence over an alleged illegal post on Facebook.

Mr. Mienpamo said he was stripped and beaten up while the suspected militants took pictures of his nudity.

The Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade in a statement described the incident as an unwelcome assault as the blogger in question was assaulted and abducted because of a mere allegation.
“The rights of Journalists and Bloggers should be respected online and offline; Police authorities should seek redress legally and not take laws into their hands whenever they have issues with reports,” Mr. Arogundade added.
The Director calls on the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police to probe the incident and take the necessary actions.

Registration for radio conference ongoing [Africa]

Radio journalists and students are invited to this event.
The Wits Radio Academy at the University of the Witwatersrand Journalism Department is organizing the Radio Days Africa conference July 4 to 6 in Johannesburg, South Africa. 
Participants will share the best radio of today and discuss the future of the medium, including issues facing radio in a changing environment and new ideas and skills.

Oxford offers journalism fellowship [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists can apply for a fellowship in Oxford, United Kingdom.
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University is seeking applications for the Anglo American Journalist Fellowship, the Google Digital News Journalist Fellowship and the Wincott Business Journalist Fellowship.
The Anglo American Journalist Fellowship is open to journalists in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Brazil, Peru, Colombia or Chile. Fellows will produce a research paper that falls broadly within the categories of transparency, accountability and/or sustainability.
The Google Digital News Journalist Fellowship is intended for journalists in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and Turkey. Fellows will produce a research paper based on some aspect of either the Digital News Report survey data or digital journalism in their country.
The Wincott Business Journalist Fellowship is aimed at midcareer business journalists who live in Sub-Saharan Africa interested in taking a deeper look at one aspect of financial reporting.
Candidates must have at least five years of experience and working proficiency in English.  Fellows receive a living allowance of GBP2,000 per month.

Digital journalism project accepting applications [US]

College students and recent graduates can apply for this free program.
NPR's Next Generation Radio is a week long digital journalism training project. The next program will take place June 25 to 29 in Philadelphia.
Participants will be selected to build their skills, be paired with a mentor and produce their own multimedia story.
The program will also be offered in Seattle, Oklahoma City, Austin, Texas, and Sacramento, California. Applicants must reside in the metropolitan area where the event will be held, with the exception of the training in Seattle, which is intended for early career professionals.
The deadline for the Philadelphia program is June 11.

UNESCO launches online course on inequalities, social transformation [Americas]

Journalists, activists, students, civil servants, researchers and others can join this free online course.
UNESCO, through its Management of Social Transformations MOST Program, organizes the online course "Inequalities in Latin America and the Caribbean: research, policy and management for social transformations."
The course, available in Spanish and English, addresses the current regional situation of inequality, warns of its dramatic consequences, and offers transformative strategies and tools to inform and improve public policies. 
The course lasts four weeks. Participants may enroll at any time.

West Kowloon Cultural District: Vacancy for assistant producer available [China]

Professionals with at least three years of experience in the arts and cultural field can apply for a position in Hong Kong.
The West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong is hiring an assistant producer.
Responsibilities include assisting in producing a diverse programme of theatre work for cultural exchange, creation, and public programming/projects; coordinating with the artists/arts groups regarding theater activities and production; and working collaboratively with performing arts teams and other departments for event and production logistics.
Candidates must be proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese and have a good understanding of the local theater scene.

MOOC on data visualization available [Worldwide]

Anyone interested in data visualization can participate in this four-week course.
The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, through its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), is offering the free course “Data visualization for storytelling and discovery” June 11 to July 8.
The course comprises four modules: an introduction to data visualization, data preparation and ethical considerations; how to use visualization to explore data and find stories; how to use visualization to communicate stories with audiences; and design a visualization based on topic and data set of your choice.
The instructor is Alberto Cairo, Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the University of Miami.
The course is accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
