UN organizes journalism competition [Worldwide]

Journalists worldwide who cover the United Nations, including its agencies and field operations, are eligible for awards.

The United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) is accepting written and electronic works for a U.N. coverage contest that consists of three awards: print (and online), broadcast and climate change.

Works must have been published or aired between September 2018 and August 2019.

Entries can be submitted in any of the official U.N. languages (English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and Russian). Entries in other languages must be accompanied by a translation in English or French.

The prizes amount to over US$60,000 that will be distributed among the winners. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres will present the prizes at the awards ceremony in December in New York.

The contest deadline is Sept. 15.

Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship accepting entries [US]

U.S. citizens with undergraduate degrees can apply for this travel fellowship.

The Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship, a joint venture of the U.S. State Department and the National Geographic Society, allows participants to spend an academic year traveling abroad and documenting stories.

Fellows will undertake an in-depth examination of a globally relevant issue and compare how that issue is experienced across borders. They will share their experiences using a variety of digital storytelling tools, including text, photography, video, audio, graphic illustrations and/or social media. Their stories will be published on a dedicated blog hosted by National Geographic.

This year's theme is oceans and water, with a focus on plastics, community coastal and fishery management, and biodiversity.

Fellows will be able to travel to any three countries where there are active Fulbright Programs.

The deadline to apply is Oct. 8.

Thomson Reuters Foundation offers Training on illicit finance reporting [Africa]

Journalists who are fluent in English and have at least two years of experience can apply for the Wealth of Nations - Illicit finance (NORAD) program.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism, is looking for journalists based anywhere in Africa to take part in a long-term scheme that will develop their ability to report on illicit financial flows.

Selected journalists will participate in an intensive training covering illicit finance, reporting on companies, accounts and budgets and investigative techniques. The first workshop will take place Oct. 22 to 23 in Cape Town, followed by a conference.

Participants will propose one or more story ideas and receive modest funding to realize their stories. The organization also covers air travel expenses, accommodation, local transfers and meals relating to the training.

The deadline is Aug. 13.

Deadline approaching: reporting fellowship to UN Climate Action Summit [Worldwide]

Journalists ages 18 to 32 are invited to enter this contest for a chance to win a fully-funded trip.

Climate Tracker will select eight young journalists to attend and cover the Global Climate Strike, the UN Youth Climate Summit, the UN Climate Action Summit and other events taking place Sept. 19 to 26 in New York.

Contestants must write an article about a youth movement or young leader pushing for climate action in their country. Articles must have at least 500 words, include a multimedia element and be published in a news site, blog, newspaper or magazine at a national, regional, local or international level.

The fellows will also receive training on climate and journalism and participate in group interviews with high-level officials/experts.

The deadline to publish and submit an article is Aug. 10.

Google News Initiative funds mentorship program [Latin America]

Entrepreneurs from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela can apply to this opportunity.

SembraMedia, with the support of the Google News Initiative, has launched Metis, a business mentoring program for Latin American media entrepreneurs.

The initiative will support seven women-founded media to make them more sustainable. Founders of the selected startups will participate in monthly meetings with international expert of the digital media ecosystem. They will also have free and complete access to the SembraMedia School's resources, where they will find training on different business models and technology.

To apply, startups must have one or more founding women, be digital natives or have a digital-first growth strategy and cover topics of public interest.

Media Development Foundation offers workshop for media managers [Eastern Europe]

Experienced editors and CEOs of media organizations from Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova can apply to participate in this program.

The Media Development Foundation and the Solidarity Fund PL has launched the Media Manager Academy program.

During four months, participants will test and develop new models of monetization with help from mentors.

The program includes three workshops that will be held Sept 6 to 8, Oct 11 to 13 and Nov. 15 to 17 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The training will cover the basics of media business, management, innovations in media, ways to implement changes and more.

At the end of the program, participants will pitch their projects to investors and donors for a chance to receive up to US$14,000 for their implementation.

The deadline for the first wave of projects is Aug. 2 and for the second wave, Aug. 15.

Workshop focuses on investigative journalism [MENA]

Journalists from Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and nd Libya can apply for this weeklong training.

The Africa-China Reporting Project at Wits Journalism and Inkyfada are hosting a journalism training workshop during the week of Oct. 7 in Tunis, Tunisia.

The workshop will focus on practical investigative skills and techniques. Topics include North African countries’ relations with China, current trends and misunderstandings; multimedia journalism, online tools and resources; data journalism and data visualization, visual storytelling and audience engagement; and cybersecurity, among other topics.

Applicants must propose a North Africa-China investigation, including a budget of no more than US$1,500. Selected journalists will receive guidance and a reporting grant to conduct the investigation after completing the workshop.

The deadline is Sept. 11.

VII Academy offers seminar on Narrative and Documentary [Europe]

Young professional photographers from the wider Balkan region can apply for this training.

The VII Academy is organizing the first class of the seminar for Narrative and Documentary Practice 2019/2020 on Sept. 21 to 28 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The program will also feature two more weeklong workshops over nine months. In between workshops, participants will be tutored by the course leaders and guest lecturers on photographic techniques and research skills as well as the history of photojournalism and documentary practice.

Applicants must be citizens and residents of the following countries: Turkey, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania.
