APSA offers Leadership workshop [MENA]

Researchers and media analysts can apply for this workshop.

The American Political Science Association (APSA), funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is accepting proposals from political scientists interested in serving as co-leaders for the seventh annual MENA workshop program.

The program will be conducted as a seven-day workshop to be held at a university or research institute in the Arab MENA region in the spring or summer of 2020, followed by related programming at the APSA Annual Meeting in September 2020.

Leadership teams must include at least one senior scholar with experience advising Ph.D. candidates. 

All expenses will be covered.

InternationalStudent.com launch travel video contest [Worldwide]

Students around the world ages 18 and older can compete in this contest.

InternationalStudent.com is accepting entries for its Travel Video Contest.

If you are currently studying outside of your home country, the video can describe any trip you would like to take. If you are not studying outside of your home country, your entry must describe your proposed study abroad.

The grand prize is US$4,000. A viewer's choice award and other runner-up prizes will also be available.

Vkratce seeks Film entries [Worldwide]

Filmmakers worldwide can enter this competition.

The contest "Vkratce!" will be held as part of a Russian and German short films festival, organized by Russia's NGO Open City with the support of the Goethe Institute. The event will take place March 27 to April 4, 2020 in Volgograd, Russia.

Short fiction, documentary, animation and experimental films must be no longer than 25 minutes and must have been created after Jan. 1, 2019. Films in other languages must include English and Russian subtitles.

Winners will receive diplomas and prizes.

Participation is free. The early deadline is Nov. 24; the regular deadline is Dec. 15. The late deadline is Jan. 4, 2020.

Investigative Reporting fellowship available[Africa]

Aspiring investigative journalists can apply for this program in South Africa.

The Open Society Foundations, in partnership with Wits Journalism, Rhodes School of Journalism and Media Studies, are offering five Open Society Fellowships in Investigative Reporting.

Fellows can study either the Wits University BA Hons in journalism and media studies or the MA in journalism and media studies, depending on their previous qualifications and experienced.

After completion of their program, fellows will be placed in internships with investigative teams for six months.

The fellowship covers study and travel costs, in addition to providing a stipend for 18 months.

The deadline is Sept. 21.

Webinar focuses on health journalism [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in health reporting and U.S. immigration issues are invited to attend this program.

The Center for Health Journalism at the University of Southern California will host the webinar "Public charge: immigrant health under Trump’s new rule" at 1 p.m. EDT on Sept. 11.

The hourlong webinar will delve into the effects of a new immigration rule that aims to make it harder for U.S. immigrants to obtain green cards if they use public benefits. Journalists will learn key data points, resources and story ideas related to the issue.

The panelists are Elizabeth Aguilera, multimedia journalist who covers health care and immigration for CalMatters, and Tom K. Wong, founding director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Center and associate professor of political science at the University of California San Diego.

Deadline Approaching : InfoNile offers reporting grant [MENA]

Journalists in the Nile Basin countries are invited to submit their proposals.

InfoNile, a collaborative cross-border group of environmental journalists, is accepting proposals for in-depth investigative multimedia journalism stories on adaptation and mitigation solutions to climate change in cities of the Nile Basin.

These stories are part of a series focusing on climate change solutions and will also feed into a final data journalism project including interactive maps and stories.

Stories must be translated into English.

The deadline is Sept. 14.

Texas A&M offers photojournalism program [Worldwide]

Undergraduate and graduate students can apply for a US$5,000 grant.

The Conflict and Development Center at Texas A&M University organizes the Student Media Grants Program. The photojournalism award encourages students to use innovative methods to research and chronicle issues facing fragile and conflict-affected nations, especially in Latin America.

Selected participants must commit to a three-month period capturing conflict-related issues facing Latin America through photography. They must document their experiences through a series of posts for the ConDev Blog and photo and/or video journalism.

Students should submit proposals that describe their expected travel, research and photo subjects. Possible topics include food insecurity, health, education, land tenure and poverty in fragile and conflict-affected nations.

The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students from accredited universities worldwide.

The deadline is Oct. 31.

Thomson Reuters seeks interns [North America]

Students or recent graduates with a strong interest in journalism can apply for paid internships.

The Thomson Reuters Journalism Internship program is accepting applications for its 2020 summer cycle. Most internships are in its New York and Washington bureaus, but opportunities may also exist in  Mexico City, Toronto, San Francisco and Chicago, as well as our other Americas offices. Internships last 10 weeks.

The programs are crash courses in business, political and general news reporting. Interns will receive several days of formal training before they start work. Every intern will report to a senior editor and be assigned a journalist mentor who will be available to provide advice and guidance.

Candidates must have completed at least two years of university, some prior journalism experience, excellent writing and communications skills.
