IWMF Call For Applications: Central African Republic (CAR) and Rwanda Reporting Fellowships

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is currently inviting applicants for its Central African Republic (CAR) And Rwanda Reporting Fellowships to strengthen the role of women journalists worldwide.
Both trips will take place from November 5-18, 2017. All Fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete comprehensive security training and an orientation about the African Great Lakes region.

Trip Locations
  • The trip to CAR will be based in Bangui.
  • The trip to Rwanda will be based in Kigali.
Benefits
  • The IWMF arranges travel and in-country logistics for all Fellows.
  • The IWMF also covers fellowship-related costs within the framework of the reporting trip including travel, lodging, meals, and fixers/interpreters, unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.
  • Visa costs will also be covered, but fellows living outside the U.S. are responsible for procuring all necessary visas.
Eligibility Criteria
  • All nationalities are welcome to apply.
  • Applicants must be affiliated or freelance women journalists with at least three years of professional experience in journalism working in print, broadcast, or digital media.
  • Fellows must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate support from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.

U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia: Building Space for Professional Journalism

The U.S. Embassy is seeking an implementing partner to conduct a training project for Ethiopian journalists from all regional states under the theme “Building Space for Professional Journalism.”
The goal is to provide journalists with skills to investigate development-related projects in areas such as public healtheducationagriculturehumanitarian assistance, and economic livelihoods, and to offer participants opportunities to use the skills they gain from the training to advance professionalism among journalists.
The first phase would involve a series of trainings held in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and in all nine regional states.  Multiple trainings will occur in each region, educating journalists on how to understand and to report on various topics (e.g. health, agriculture, education, etc.). Trainings will be open to journalists working for state media as well as independent outlets.  Trainings will be conducted by experts from relevant offices in USAID, CDC, and the Department of State.

Thomson Reuters offers conflict reporting lab, grants [Worldwide]

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with the Stanley Foundation and Gerda Henkel Stiftung, is offering the training program "Uncovering Security - Story Lab," which aims to support journalists to uncover emerging threats in the world and bring these stories to a wide audience.
The program features a three-day residential story lab in January on emerging security situations; the opportunity to apply for small grants to cover the cost of reporting stories; access to experienced journalists who have covered security stories; and support with pitching stories to international publication platforms.
Candidates must have at least three years of experience in journalism and be fluent in English. Experience covering security situations would be an advantage.
Journalists must submit a story idea that relates to an emerging security situation in a specific community, country or region in the world.
The deadline is Sept. 4.

Contest highlights coverage of small businesses [Brazil]

Brazil's National Federation of Accounting Companies (Fenacon), with institutional support from the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj), is accepting entries for the Fenacon Journalism Awards.
Topics should be related to tax burden reduction; debureaucratization; development and representativeness of the service sector and micro and small businesses; and innovation initiatives, professional education and social responsibility in the service sector.
Stories must have been published or broadcast between Aug. 1, 2016 and Sept. 19, 2017.
The categories are print and multimedia journalism (web, radio and TV), featuring BRL5,000 prizes to the winners of each category. There is also a BRL15,000 grand prize for the best overall work.

Poynter offers fact-checking fellowships [Worldwide]

The International Fact-Checking Network at Poynter, with support from the Shuttleworth Foundation, is offering two fellowships worth US$2,500 each.
Candidates must specify the organization they want to visit, pitch a detailed plan including the duration and what they seek to learn from the experience. Fellows must spend at least one week with the partner organization.
