Festival focuses on Nonfiction (Argentina)

Anyone can attend this free event.
Nonfiction festival "Basado en hechos reales" (Based on true events) will take place Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in Buenos Aires.
The program will feature public interviews, debates and insights about the state and relevance of narrative journalism, documentalism and new digital storytelling platforms.
Argentine journalists Leila Guerriero, Martín Sivak and Cristian Alarcón will be among the speakers, as well as international participants, such as D.T. Max, Álvaro Longoria and Gabriela Wiener.
Registration is not required. Each panel will admit attendees until spots are filled.

Journalism training program open [MENA]

Aspiring reporters, recent graduates or professionals with proven experience who want to switch careers into journalism can participate in this six-month program. 
Thomson Reuters is accepting candidates for its Journalism Training Program for the Middle East and North Africa.
The program begins September 2018 with an intensive training in London, followed by a placement in a major bureau in the Middle East or Africa, such as Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, Beirut, Cairo or Dubai.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism, as well as fluency in Arabic or a language (apart from English) that is widely spoken in Africa.
The deadline is Dec. 22.

Competition calls for short films submissions [Russia, Germany]

Filmmakers from Russia and Germany can compete.
The contest "Vkratce!" will be held as part of a Russian and German short films festival, organized by Russia's NGO Open City with the support of the Goethe Institute. The event will take place in April 2018 in Volgograd, Russia.
Short fiction, documentary and animation must be no longer than 20 minutes and have been created after June 1, 2016.
Russian films must include English or German subtitles, and German films must include Russian subtitles.
Winners will receive diplomas and trophies.
Participation is free. The regular deadline is Dec. 20. The late deadline is Jan. 5, 2018.

Michael Elliott Award seeks entries (Africa)

English speaking Journalists working in Africa can apply for this award

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in collaboration with the Elliott family and ONE seek entries for the 2018 Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling.

This award, given in Mike’s name, will provide the winner a $5,000 cash prize to pursue an in-depth reporting project. In a special study tour organized by ICFJ, the winner will spend time in U.S. newsrooms to learn new skills and share knowledge. In order to take full advantage of the study tour, applicants must speak English, even if they work in another language.

US: Journalism fellowship Open

Journalists interested in solutions journalism can apply for this virtual program.
The Solutions Journalism Network is launching the 2018 Story Fellowship, an opportunity to spotlight high-caliber journalism and engage communities around solutions-focused and results-oriented news stories.
Fellows will analyze, index and curate solutions journalism stories, while acquiring experience in the growing field of the digital humanities. The fellowship runs from January 2018 to January 2019.
Applicants do not need to be journalists but have an avid interest in critically reading it and in developing an expertise in a particular coverage area.
Apply by Nov. 20 to receive priority consideration.

Competition focuses on investigative reporting on bribery [Worldwide]

Print reporters, citizen journalists and bloggers who focused on bribery cases can compete for a prize.
TRACE International, a nonprofit anti-bribery organization, hosts a prize for investigative reporting that focuses on uncov
ering commercial bribery with the goal of advancing transparency in the business community.
Works must have appeared in print or online in 2017 and may cover actual violations of law as well as activities that create significant conflicts of interest and related misconduct. Entries not originally written/produced in English must be accompanied by a translation.
Up to two winners will be selected to receive US$10,000 each, in addition to a funded trip to receive their award at a conference organized by TRACE International in mid-2018.
Two honorable mentions will each receive US$1,000.
The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2018.

WIKIMEDIA photo competition accepting entries [Africa]

Professional and amateur photographers can enter this contest.
Wiki Loves Africa is an annual contest, hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, where people across Africa can contribute photos about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the foundation.
This year, the competition seeks submissions about people at work, including for special categories focusing on working women and fading traditional crafts or styles of working.
The first, second and third place winners will receive US$600, US$400 and US$200, in addition to a portable power pack. The photo essay prize consists of US$200 and additional prizes.
The deadline is Nov. 30.
