Alfred Fried Photography Award seeks submissions [Worldwide]




Professional and amateur photographers can enter this contest.

The Alfred Fried Photography Award, renamed as the Global Peace Photo Award, seeks pictures that capture human efforts toward a peaceful world and the quest for beauty and goodness in our lives.

The organizers are Photographische Gesellschaft (PHG) and Edition Lammerhuber, in partnership with UNESCO, the Austrian Parliament, the Austrian Parliamentary Reporting Association, the International Press Institute (IPI) and the World Press Photo Foundation. 

Contestants must submit more than five photographs that share a theme or concept and title.

The winner of the Peace Image of the Year will receive EUR10,000. The top five photographers will be awarded the Alfred Fried Photography Award Medal.

The deadline is May 24.

Fellowships for journalists available [US]



Budding and experienced journalists interested in civil rights reporting can apply for a one-semester fellowship.

The Columbia Journalism School hosts the Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights, which will oversee a senior and a junior fellowship in 2020.

Although the fellowship is nonresidential, fellows have access to the resources of the journalism school, are expected to give a public presentation at the school and can mentor students. Fellows receive US$10,000.

The senior fellowship is open to candidates with 10 or more years of journalism experience. The junior fellowship is for those who have fewer than five years of full-time journalism experience.

The deadline is April 30.

Rural journalism contest accepting entries [Brazil]



Journalists in the states of Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Ceará, Piauí, Sergipe, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo can compete for this award.

Semear Internacional organizes a journalism contest to honor stories on rural practices developed by projects supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Brazil.

The categories are print media, television, radio and internet. The first and second place winners in each category will receive BRL12,500 and BRL5,000, respectively.

Works must have been broadcast or published between Jan. 15, 2020 and June 30, 2020.

The deadline is July 15.

Film festival accepting entries [Africa]




Documentarians can submit their films to this festival.

The South African Independent Film Festival (SA Indie Film Fest), date to be reconsidered due to the pandemic, will take place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

Awards and prizes are given in a variety of categories, including feature and short documentaries, virtual reality experience and more. 

Films must have been completed before April 10. Foreign language films are accepted but must contain English subtitles.

The regular deadline is May 31. The late deadline is June 10; and the extended deadline is July 1.

Online course focuses on coronavirus infodemic [Worldwide]



Newsroom and communications professionals tackling the challenge posed by the coronavirus infodemic can access this online course.

First Draft has launched “Covering coronavirus: An online course for journalists”  to help slow the spread of misinformation and produce credible and reliable coverage.

The two-hour course covers how to understand information disorder: how and why false information spreads; how to monitor for coronavirus-related information on the social web; the main tools and techniques for verifying content online; best practices to slow down the spread of misinformation; and how to look after your own mental health while covering a pandemic.

British journalists from socially or ethnically diverse backgrounds can apply for a training grant.

The Journalism Diversity Fund offers grants to journalists attending courses with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).

Candidates must provide proof of application or have secured a place in an NCTJ accredited course during the academic year.

Applicants must reside in the United Kingdom and have a genuine commitment to journalism.

The deadline to apply for the next group of bursaries is June 24.

Open Society Foundations offers grant for investigative project [Central America]



Journalists in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua can apply to this program.

The Gabo Foundation and the Open Society Foundations are organizing a solutions journalism program that will deliver seven grants of up to US$3,400 to investigative projects in print, radio/podcast, audiovisual or digital formats.

Special attention will be given to applications related to citizen security, climate change, transparency and initiatives against corruption.

Selected journalists will have four months to carry out their investigation and publish the resulting story.

The deadline is May 15.

Russian Reporter magazine offers Summer school for journalists [Russia]



Students, journalists and documentary filmmakers can participate in this summer program.

The Summer school, organized with the support of Russian Reporter magazine and Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, will take place July 11 to Aug. 10 in the Tver region of Russia.

Participants can attend different programs, including workshops on the evolution of media, data analysis, documentary production, crisis journalism, science communication, podcasting, school of science journalism, and more.

The recommended donation for one day of participation is RUB500, which includes meals and training.

The Pulitzer Center's Rainforest Journalism Fund will host the webinar "Introduction to Global Forest Watch Resources for Journalists" at 10 p.m. EDT on April 16.

The webinar will focus on tools and resources that journalists can use to tell stories about forests. Participants will learn about the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia and Global Forest Watch (GFW), a global forest monitoring database that helps identify when, where and why forest cover is lost.

The Internews Network accepting candidates for Human rights program [MENA]


Journalists across the MENA region who focus on human rights issues and religious freedom are invited to apply for this training.

The Internews Network, in partnership with Maharat Foundation and Samir Kassir Foundation, is accepting applications for a training program that will take place in the summer of 2020.

The program is designed to promote a culture of respect for religious diversity in MENA countries by improving the quality, quantity and dissemination of objective reporting on religious freedom.

Participants must be able to commit to multiple workshops, ongoing mentoring and reporting and writing assignments scheduled over 12 months. The main language of the training will be Arabic.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the training will not take place in person. The organizers will announce more details.

The winner will receive a fully-funded trip to attend the One Young World Summit 2020 Oct. 14 to 17 in Munich, Germany.

PEN America is expanding its Writers’ Emergency Fund in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grants will range from US$500 to $US1,000 based on applications' inability to meet an acute financial need.
