Media School accepting storytelling entries [Worldwide]

Students, bloggers, artists and writers can submit their innovative storytelling to a contest.

The Media School at Bournemouth University is accepting entries for its New Media Writing Prize (NMWP).

NMWP is looking for innovative and interactive storytelling (fiction or nonfiction) written specifically for delivery and reading/viewing on a PC or Mac, the web or a hand-held device such as an iPad or mobile phone. It could be a short story, novel, documentary or poem using words, images, film or animation with audience interaction.

The winner of the if:book UK New Media Award will receive GBP1,000 (US$1,214). The student winner will receive GBP750 (US$910) from Unicorn Training. There will also be the Gorkana Journalism Award, worth GBP750 (US$607), the Dot Award, which includes GBP500 (US$657) and development support, and the new Skylab Innovation Award, a GBP500 prize celebrating innovative use of the Genarrator platform.

The general deadline is Nov. 22. The deadline for students is Dec. 13.

Internships program available at Washington Post [US]

Journalism students can apply for a summer internship program in Washington.

The Washington Post offers 12-week paid internships for reporters, visual journalists, multiplatform editors or producers, news or digital designers, graphics reporters or developers, social media producers and audio producers.

Candidates must have had at least one professional news media job or internship and be a college junior, senior or graduate student in a degree program on Oct. 9.

Interns are paid. For summer 2019, the salary was US$750 per week.

The deadline is Oct. 9.

Gabo Foundation offers Nonfiction book workshop [Latin America]

Latin American journalists working on a nonfiction book can apply to attend this workshop.

The Gabo Foundation,  the Oaxaca International Book Fair and UNAM are organizing a nonfiction book workshop Oct. 21 to 27 in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Eight journalists will have the opportunity to discuss their long-term projects and identify the weaknesses and strengths of their written work. The program will be led by Argentine journalist and writer Martin Caparrós.

The registration fee is US$500 for selected participants. The Oaxaca International Book Fair Foundation will offer accommodation, international medical insurance and partial ticket reimbursement for participants outside Mexico, as well as meals.

The deadline is Sept. 16.

Kamal Adham offers journalism fellowship [Egypt]

Graduates of journalism and mass communication who wish to pursue a master’s degree in television and digital journalism can apply for this fellowship.

The Kamal Adham Fellowship at the America University in Cairo covers full or partial tuition for the master's program, in addition to books and transportation fees.

Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and prove they are in financial hardship.

Preference is given to graduates of Egyptian public universities and professionals in the broadcasting industry.

Webinar on chat apps, journalism available [Worldwide]

Anyone concerned with the use of WhatsApp to spread misinformation can attend this Dow Jones-TruthBuzz webinar.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will host the webinar "A private affair: chat apps and journalism" at 9 a.m. EDT on Aug. 22, which will be streamed simultaneously on the IJNet Facebook page.

The webinar will feature Shalini Joshi, who works on the TruthBuzz project for the India-based PROTO, and Tai Nalon, executive director and co-founder of Aos Fatos in Brazil.

Both experts will discuss their experience researching the nature and spread of misinformation as both their countries, India and Brazil, have been impacted by the extensive use of private messaging platforms during recent election campaigns.

They will address questions such as: How should newsrooms take messaging apps into account in their daily work? How can journalists mitigate risk when working with these platforms? How can journalists scale their efforts to reach larger and more diverse audiences? What ethical and privacy concerns should journalists have when using these platforms?

Experienced journalists can apply for several positions in southern China.

Southern Metropolis Weekly is seeking a reporter, a news editor and writers.

The reporter will cover Shenzhen, Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area, providing original content for both print and new media platforms. Applicants must have experience in news investigation and the ability to generate and curate original news content. Having a relevant network of contacts and experience in finance, politics and in-depth news investigation are advantageous. The position is based in Shenzhen.

The news editor will also work on the news coverage of Shenzhen, Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area. This would include coordinating reporting activities, mentoring reporters to develop news features and editing content. Ideal candidates must have two-plus years of news editing experience in traditional media or three-plus years of work experience in new media. Gleb Fetisov launches new journalism contest [Worldwide]

Journalism organizations are invited to nominate journalists for this award.

Russian philanthropist Gleb Fetisov has launched the Fetisov Journalism Awards. This new competition aims to recognize journalists for their contribution to the promotion of universal human values and extraordinary heroism.

The contest has four categories: contribution to peace, contribution to civil rights, investigative reporting and environmental journalism.

Works must have been published between June 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019. Entries in languages other than English must be accompanied by a translation into English.

The first, second and third place winners in each category will receive CHF100,000 (US$102,009), CHF20,000 (US$20,401) and CHF10,000 (US$10,200), respectively.

The deadline is Oct. 1.
