Mongabay reporting project focuses on the Commons [Worldwide]

Experienced journalists can apply for a paid reporting opportunity.

Mongabay is accepting pitches for the Covering the Commons Special Reporting Project (SRP).

The initiative aims to produce a series of informative articles reporting on the status of shared resources and life-support systems, including our air, water and biodiversity.

Registration ongoing for journalism online courses [Latin America, Spain]

Anyone can enroll in these online courses in Spanish.

Periodismo.net offers a wide variety of virtual trainings in journalism: introduction to journalism, journalism writing, film journalism, music and rock journalism, business journalism, sports journalism, literary journalism, travel journalism and a workshop on strategic communication.

All courses will begin on Feb. 17 and run for 12 weeks.

Young photographers contest open [Russia]

Photojournalists and amateur photographers ages 18 to 35 who are Russian citizens can compete in this contest.

The Russian Union of Art Photographers is launching its annual photo contest Young Russian Photographers.

Participants may submit photo projects and stories including three to six photos, all united by a general theme or multimedia projects.

Winners will be awarded culture and arts scholarships and diplomas.

Mophradat seeks collaborative projects [MENA]

Journalists, writers, critics, curators, artists and academics can apply for this collaborative program.

Mophradat is accepting applications for its Self-Organizations program, which aims to provoke inventive ways of working and collaborating.

The program offers support to projects where different arts practitioners take the initiative and join forces to define a mutual resource or interest that’s important for their work and propose how to share or develop it.

A maximum budget of US$6,000 will be available to cover the cost of this shared resource, starting May. 1.

Journalists, documentary filmmakers, photographers, podcasters and multimedia producers working on longform, deeply reported nonfiction projects are invited to apply for this virtual fellowship.

The Logan Nonfiction Program is accepting candidates for the spring 2021 class, which will run April to June.

The program offers workshops, mentorship and community working on socially relevant political, health, environmental, human rights and justice topics. 

Professionals who work in languages other than English are encouraged to apply but must have a working knowledge of English.

The fellowship will run for five or 10 weeks.

Ida B. Wells offers journalism fellowship [US]

Journalists of color can apply for a fellowship to produce investigative reporting.

Type Investigations organizes the Ida B. Wells Fellowship to promote diversity in journalism by helping to create a pipeline of investigative reporters of color who bring diverse backgrounds, experiences and interests to their work.

The yearlong fellowship provides a US$20,000 award, editorial advice and legal assistance. Fellows will receive funds to cover travel and other reporting costs, and the costs associated with attending the annual Investigative Reporters and Editors conference.

CFI offers Investigative reporting training [Africa]

Journalists in Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Niger and Madagascar interested in gender issues can apply for this training.

MédiaLab Pour Elles is a program on data journalism and investigative reporting hosted by CFI and co-funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Six journalists per country will be selected to participate in this training will take place between March and July.

MédilLab Pour Elles will then help these 24 journalists produce eight collaborative investigations over five to six months. Once completed, the investigations will be published via the journalists' media employers or partner media.

Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Leadership program for women journalists available [Worldwide]

Women media professionals can apply for this program.

WAN-IFRA is organizing the Women in News Accelerator (WIN), an intensive, nine-month-long career and leadership program for journalists. 

The program seeks to build the skills, strategies and support networks of women media professionals through coaching, training, mentoring and networking. 

Participants must have two to three years of experience managing people or processes and be working in the media sector.

Applicants who are not from eligible countries can apply for the Media Management Training e-learning course. The course duration is six weeks and costs US$120. Scholarships are available.

The deadline is Jan. 31 for African and Arab journalists. Applications for Southeast Asian journalists will open March 1 to 31.

ACFJ offers Master's program , fellowships [Asia]

Asian journalists with at least one full year of experience can apply for a visual journalism diploma program.

The Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines is accepting applications for the 2021 diploma programs in photojournalism and multimedia journalism.

ACFJ’s diploma programs provide comprehensive training to journalists who wish to venture into new media and hone skills they need to be competent in a converged newsroom.

Fellowships are available to practicing journalists with outstanding career records and who have a potential to contribute to good journalism in their communities and advocate responsible journalism.

Google News Initiative offers grants to counter misinformation on COVID-19 vaccine [Worldwide]

News organizations that seek to fact-check misinformation about the COVID-19 immunization process can apply for funding.

The Google News Initiative has launched the COVID-19 Vaccine Counter-Misinformation Open Fund.

This US$3,000,000 fund is available for projects that demonstrate a clear potential to provide effective corrective tools and content to counterbalance COVID-19 vaccine misinformation. 

Selected projects will receive up to US$1,000.000. Priority will be given to collaborative, interdisciplinary projects.

International Women’s Film Festival seeks entries on women's rights and gender problems [Worldwide]

Women filmmakers from around the world can submit short documentary, fiction and animated films to this festival.

The International Women’s Film Festival "KIN" ("woman" in Armenian), organized by the Legal Gender Cultural Foundation LIZA, will take place Nov. 9 to 13 in Yerevan, Armenia.

The festival is looking for films that address issues related to women’s rights and gender problems.

There are two award categories: best film and special prize.

Competitive films must have been produced in last two years and include English subtitles.

Journalists interested in communication, journalism, social media management, content production and editing can register for this online training.

The Center for Digital Journalism at the University of Guadalajara offers a course on strategic communication that will take place between Feb. 21 and July 5.

Participants will acquire theoretical and practical skills that will allow them to plan and execute professional communication strategies using digital platforms.

The program is divided into five modules: uses of the communication area, tools for communication, profile and role of the spokesperson, reactive communication and proactive communication.

Medor offers grants for development, inclusion reporting [Belgium]

Journalists from underrepresented groups can apply for this reporting grant.

Médor, a Belgium-based investigative magazine, will award the 2021 Journalism Grant to a journalist or group of journalists as part of a project that aims to better reflect society as a whole both in the newsroom as well as in its articles.

The winner will receive EUR2,000 and support from the editorial staff to produce a story. This amount will be added to the payment provided for the article.

Only authors who have never published in Médor are eligible.

IPPAWARDS launches iPhone competition for photographers [Worldwide]


Photographers worldwide can enter a contest to win Apple product prizes.

The iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) is an annual competition recognizing iPhone photography.

Top three photographers typically receive an upcoming Apple product and runners-up from each of the 18 categories will be awarded with gold bars. The work of the first, second and third place winners in each category will be publicized on IPPAWARDS online gallery.

All images must be taken with an iPhone or iPad. The photos should not be altered in Photoshop or any desktop image processing program, but the use of iPhone apps is allowed.

Arthur F. Burns exchange program seeks fellows [US, Canada, Germany]

Young journalists from the United States, Canada, Germany can apply for this fellowship.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) seeks applications for the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, an exchange program that gives media professionals from the United States, Canada and Germany an opportunity to report from and travel in each other's countries.

The purpose of the program is to increase public understanding of the two regions through mass media. Successful applicants will report for their home and host news organizations from across the Atlantic. The next fellowship will take place in August and September.

Applicants must be print, online or broadcast journalists between 21 and 40 years old. German language proficiency is not required, but it is encouraged. Selected fellows not fluent in German will spend the first two weeks of the fellowship in intensive German language classes.

Each fellow will receive a US$4,000 living stipend and an additional US$1,200 for airfare. The program also covers lodging in Washington for a joint one-week group orientation session.

ICFJ plans to support diverse new voices and fresh perspectives, therefore they want to encourage journalists with diverse backgrounds and journalists of color to apply

The deadline for German applicants is Jan. 31.

GAPP offers Journalism fellowship [Egypt]

Egyptian students can apply for this fellowship to pursue a master's degree in journalism and mass communication at the American University in Cairo.

Yousef Jameel, working with the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP), established the Yousef Jameel Public Leadership Program, with the overall objective of building the capacity of young competent Egyptian nationals in several areas.

Students must complete their master's degrees within a period of two and a half years including an optional semester as a study-abroad. 

The organizers cover full tuition, student services and activities fees, in addition to a monthly stipend and accommodation allowance for non-residents of Cairo.

Applicants must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.2.

Investigative journalism grants available [Worldwide]

Investigative journalists can apply for a reporting grant.

The grants, sponsored by the Fund for Investigative Journalism, are intended to support investigative projects that break new ground and expose wrongdoing – such as corruption, malfeasance or misuse of power – in the public and private sectors.

The maximum award is US$10,000, which should cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs, document collection and equipment rental. The first half of the grant is given once an application is approved and the second half is paid when the project is complete.

Proposals must come from U.S.-based reporters or journalists whose stories have a U.S. angle, involving American citizens, government or businesses. Stories must be published in English.

Proposals must be submitted in English and include a detailed budget.

Obama Foundation Scholars Program accepting applications [Worldwide]

Emerging leaders from around the world who have made meaningful contributions to their field can apply for this program in New York.

Columbia University is accepting candidates for the 2021-2022 Obama Foundation Scholars Program.

Scholars will spend the academic year, August to May, in an immersive program that brings together academic, skills-based and experiential learning, designed by Columbia University in consultation with the Obama Foundation.

Although the program typically takes place in New York, there is a possibility it will be conducted remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program offers airfare, a monthly stipend, a furnished studio apartment, tuition and fees for up to four courses at Columbia University and medical, dental and life insurance.
