The American Copy Editors Society has announced that all its webinars will be available to members and non-members at no cost through July 31.

The organization is also planning to host additional webinars, such as "Checking consistency: How to use PerfectIt for faster and better results (for beginners)" at 4 p.m. EDT on May 7 and "Engaged style guides: Co-creating standards with your community" at 4 p.m. EDT on May 27.

Richard J. Margolis Award focuses on social justice journalism [US]



Journalists whose projects reflect a concern for social justice can apply for this award.

The Richard J. Margolis Award is given annually to a journalist or essayist who has combined humor and wisdom to address social issues.

The winner will receive a US$5,000 prize, along with a one-month residency at Blue Mountain Center, a writers and artists colony in Blue Mountain Lake, New York.

The award was created by family and friends of Richard J. Margolis, a journalist, essayist and poet who brought light to hardships faced by subgroups including migrant farm workers, the elderly and Native Americans.

IJP offers Fellowship [MENA]



Journalists ages 21 to 37 across the Middle East and proficient in German or English can apply for this fellowship.

The Internationale Journalisten-Programme (IJP) seeks to foster relations between Germany and Middle Eastern region giving young journalists the opportunity to spend two months in a Berlin-based media, working as correspondents for their outlets back home.

The fellowship is scheduled to begin Oct. 29 with an introductory seminar in Berlin.

Selected candidates will receive EUR4,000 (US$4,329), which should cover airfares, transportation, accommodation and meals.

CASW offers writing competition [US]



Journalists ages 30 and younger who cover scientific issues can apply for the Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award.

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW) created the award to encourage young science writers by recognizing outstanding reporting and writing in any field of science.

Works must have been published between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020.

Both freelancers and staff writers are eligible. Science writing includes, but is not limited to, writing in the biological, physical, environmental, computer and space sciences, along with technology, mathematics, health and science policy. 

The winner will receive US$1,000 and expenses to attend ScienceWriters2020 in Colorado.

Business journalism fellowship available [Worldwide]



Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply for a fellowship.

The McGraw Center for Business Journalism at the City University of New York's Craig Newmark School of Journalism offers a fellowship program to support in-depth coverage of business and the global economy.

The fellowship provides editorial and financial support to journalists who need the time and resources to tackle complex, time-consuming stories.

The program is accepting applications for in-depth text, video or audio pieces. Fellows will receive grants of US$5,000 a month for one to three months.

Reporters and editors working at news organizations, as well as freelancers, may apply. International journalists are also eligible as long as their reporting is completed in English and targeted to a U.S. media outlet and audience.

The application deadline is July 10.

Registration ongoing for online journalism workshop [Spain, Latin America]



Young journalists and recent graduates with no professional experience can sign up for this online training.

Spain's CTXT magazine will offer a journalism workshop May 7, 14, 21 and 28.

The workshop will consist of four modules: classic journalism, digital journalism, covering feminism and climate change, and street journalism.

The cost of the workshop is EUR160. There is a limited number of scholarships for recent graduates with no professional experience, who will pay EUR30 on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Sakharov Center seeks Photo entries [Worldwide]



Professional and amateur photographers worldwide can compete in this contest.

The FOTODOC Center for Documentary Photography at the Sakharov Center in Russia holds the international photo competition "Direct look." The contest focuses on problems pertaining to relations among people, society and state, as well as ways of addressing these problems.

Entries must comprise a series of images representing reports, stories or long-term photography projects. There are three categories: "The problem," "The conflict" and "The compromise."

Photographs must have been taken in the past four years. All entry descriptions and image captions must be in English.

The winners in each category will receive RUB30,000 (US$405) cash prize.

Essay competition for youths open [Worldwide]



Children and young adults up to 25 years old can enter this essay contest endorsed by UNESCO.

The Goi Peace Foundation presents its 2020 International Essay Contest for Young People, inviting youth to write on this year's theme: "A letter from myself in 2030.”

Contestants must write a letter from 2030 to their present (2020) self, in which they describe the state of the world, the way people are living, and what they are doing in society. 

Essays must be 700 words or less, typed or printed in English, French, Spanish or German or 1,600 characters or less in Japanese.

The first-place winner will receive a certificate and prize of JPY100,000 (US$900) and will be invited to the award ceremony in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled for November 2020.

Media Fellowships available [Europe, US]



Journalists who offer new perspectives on transatlantic policy debates and come from diverse communities are invited to apply.

The Transatlantic Media Fellowships, sponsored by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, give American and European journalists the opportunity to conduct research in the European Union (for American journalists) and in the United States (for European journalists).

The fellowships are an integral component of the Transatlantic Dialogue Program on Democracy and Social Policy, promoting a vibrant discourse between U.S. and European societies on the shared challenges to their democracies and the values of the transatlantic partnership.

Fellows must complete their trip by Oct 31, which may change due to COVID-19 developments. They must research stories relevant to the foundation’s work on climate and energy policy, democracy, foreign and security policy, and technology and digital policy.

The program will provide a US$3,500 honorarium to cover all costs related to the project, including travel and accommodation.

The deadline has been extended to May 18.

Ian Parry Scholarship seeks photo entries [Worldwide]

The Ian Parry Scholarship aims to help young documentary photographers undertake a chosen project and raise their international profile.

This year's contest features two prizes: the Award for Achievement and the Award for Potential. Each winner will receive US$3,500, Canon photo equipment and more.

Fulbright offers scholarships [Lebanon]



Lebanese journalists, as well as Palestinian residents of Lebanon, can apply for this grant to study in the United States.

The 2021-2023 Fulbright Student Scholarship Program is accepting students who wish to pursue a master’s degree at a university in the United States. The program covers a maximum of two academic years of study.

Applicants must reside in Lebanon and have completed (or be preparing to complete) a bachelor's degree before summer 2021. They must also receive a TOEFL score of 80 or higher.

Priority will be given to those applicants who will study journalism, entrepreneurship, humanities, social sciences, political science and other fields that are not available in Lebanon.

The grant covers round-trip airfare between Lebanon and the United States, tuition, books, health insurance and room and board.

Reporting grants available [Africa, Asia, Europe]

Teams of African, Asian and European journalists can apply for a reporting grant. 

Journalismfund.eu will support stories on cross-border illicit financial flows, tax abuse and corruption in Africa, Asia and Europe, as part of the Money Trail project.

The project is conducting 10 application rounds between 2018 and 2020. The total amount per call is about EUR50,000.

Teams must consist of at least one African, one Asian and/or one European journalist. Exceptional proposals from individual journalists in Africa and Asia whose story includes an offshore element in a national story may be accepted.

UN calls for video entries [Worldwide]



Filmmakers ages 25 and younger are invited to submit films on migration, diversity and social inclusion.

PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival is a competition sponsored by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Videos must be less than 5 minutes long, include English subtitles and be produced after Dec. 31, 2018.

There are three age-based categories, the Special Award for the Prevention of Xenophobia, the Future We Want Award and the Award #forSafeWorship. Winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Morocco in late 2020 to attend the PLURAL+ 2020 Festival and Awards Ceremony.
