Professional journalists can compete for this new award.

Instituto de Garantias Penais has launched the IGP Award for Journalism and Justice.

Works must have been published in Portuguese between Jan. 1 and Oct. 25, 2020 and focus on Justice decisions on freedom, fundamental guarantees and the democratic rule of law.

The first, second and third place winners will receive BRL20,000, BRL10,000 and BRL5,000, respectively.

Media Fund focuses on elections, COVID-19 [US]

Journalists and organizations in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and Georgia can apply for this fund. 

Press On has launched the Southern Movement Media Fund, which will provide support to movement journalism in the South. 

The fund will initially focus on reporting the historic 2020 election, uprisings and coronavirus pandemic from the perspective of marginalized and oppressed people.

Individuals can receive grants of US$5,000 and organizations, US$15,000. 

The deadline for the first round is Oct. 2 to receive funds by Oct. 30.

The deadline for the second round is Oct. 23 to receive funds by Nov. 18.

Vacancy: Politico seeks journalists [France, Belgium]

Journalists fluent in French and English and passionate about politics can apply for several positions.

Politico is looking for a Francophone politics reporter in Paris, an Anglophone politics reporter with good knowledge of French, also in Paris, and a bilingual news editor in Brussels.

The selected journalists will contribute to the reinforcement of Politico's coverage of French and European politics.

Candidates must have good knowledge of French politics and experience with hard news as well as reported features.

Prague Civil Society Centre seeks storytelling project on domestic violence [Eastern Europe, Central Asia]

NGOs, activist groups, shelters and media in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus can participate in this program.

The Prague Civil Society Centre is organizing "Telling Her Story," an anti-domestic violence campaign lab that will be held online between October and December.

The program will help participants develop compelling, effective, low-budget campaigns against domestic violence, based on stories of real people. The organizers provide mentorship and financial support for the selected projects.

The lab will begin with a two-week training, followed by a mentorship period. The final stage of the lab is a grant competition. The winners will receive grants of EUR2,000 to EUR8,000 for their campaigns.

Classes will be in Russian, while the language of campaigns will depend on the target audience.

Earth Journalism Network offers grants [Worldwide]

Journalists, media organizations and journalism schools can apply for grants for training and capacity building.

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN), with support from Arcadia, organizes the Biodiversity Media Grant Opportunity to increase the capacity of media to cover critical issues of conservation and biodiversity.

The total grant fund is US$48,000, which will be tentatively shared among three to five projects.

Projects should build the capacity of journalism networks and media organizations to report on biodiversity and conservation issues; carry out biodiversity and/or conservation training activities for journalists; build internal capacity; or organize local networks around these issues.

EJN is especially interested in projects that focus on conservation in high-biodiversity regions of the world, such as the Amazon, Central Africa and Southeast Asia.

The deadline is Oct. 15.

Digital media awards seeks applications [Togo]

Digital media entrepreneurs in Togo can apply for this contest.

The Togo Digital Awards recognize performance, creativity and innovation in the digital media.

Categories include: best media or tool (which includes blogs, podcasts, magazines and videos), blogger of the year and fan favorite.

The winners will be announced after a public voting period during an award ceremony on Jan. 9, 2021.

Photography grants available [Worldwide]


Working photographers can apply for a grant.

The Aftermath Project is offering a US$25,000 grant for photographers who tell the other half of the story of conflict. This year's grant will focus on 1492/1619 American Aftermaths.

Proposals may relate to a wide interpretation of America’s original sins: the 1492 “discovery” by Christopher Columbus and the assault on indigenous peoples and their cultures which followed; and the 1619 arrival of the first enslaved Africans and the legacy of slavery based on white supremacy and the treatment of Blacks as chattel.

Photographers from underrepresented communities are encouraged to apply. Full-time students are not eligible.

Periodismo Cide is organizing the workshop "Fake news: tools for detection and analysis" on Oct. 15.

Photography contest seeks entries [Worldwide]

Photographers who use mobile phone cameras can submit images to a contest.

The Mobile Photography Awards is a competition and touring exhibit promoting mobile photography and art.

A grand prize winner will receive US$3,000, and the MPA Photo Essay winner will be awarded US$500.

Entries will be judged on creativity, originality and for highlighting the contest's theme - creating groundbreaking images despite the limitations of the medium.

Submission fees are US$15 for one image, US$30 for three images, US$50 for six images and US$100 for 15 images. The entry for the MPA Photo Essay is US$29.

The deadline is Dec. 14.

Journalists exchange fellowship program available [Germany, UK, US]

Journalists ages 25 to 35 from the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany can apply for a fellowship in Russia.

The Alfa Fellowship Program, sponsored by Alfa-Bank, is a professional development exchange program that places qualified young professionals in work assignments at leading organizations in Russia. 

The program offers language training in Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom, an orientation in Washington, language classes in Moscow, and regional excursions throughout Russia and one to a neighboring country. Fellows will be placed at host organizations that meet the interests of participants.

Fellows receive travel, free housing, monthly stipends and insurance.

Suitcase 2020 contest seeks reports on migration [Armenia]

Journalists from Armenia can compete for cash prizes.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Armenia and the Migration Service of Armenia are organizing the journalism contest "Suitcase 2020" on migration and border management issues.

Topics include asylum and international protection, return and reintegration, stateless persons and related issues, migration in the context of the pandemic. 

Works must have been published or broadcast between Jan. 1 and Nov. 15, 2020.

The deadline is Nov. 20.
