Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can apply.

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.

NED encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transition.

Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000.

NED is interested in proposals from organizations for nonpartisan programs that seek to: promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency.

Tunisian students and journalists ages 18 to 25 are invited to apply for this five-week program in the United States.

The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia is accepting applications for its entrepreneurship and economic development program run by the 2019 Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders.

This intensive exchange opportunity provides undergraduate students with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills.

The program, scheduled for July and August 2020, will feature seminar discussions, readings, group presentations and lectures as well as educational travel, site visits, leadership activities, and volunteering within the local community.

Cultural Vistas offers Journalism Fellowship on Disinformation [Germany, US]

U.S. and German students and recent graduates can apply for this fellowship.

Cultural Vistas is organizing the Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship (JED Fellowship), funded by the Transatlantic Program of the government of the Federal Republic of Germany through funds of the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi).

The fellowship brings together eight German and eight American journalism students for a weeklong program in Washington and New York. Fellows meet with news outlets, other journalists and media experts to discuss the role of disinformation in political news coverage in the U.S. and Europe as well as explore strategies to counteract its rise.

Candidates outside of major news hubs and those with limited or no prior international experience are encouraged to apply.

Journalists working on an underreported project in the public interest can apply for funding.

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University (NYU) invites applications for its reporting award. The award supports research and reporting for a significant work of journalism on any medium.

One or several winners will receive up to US$12,500, NYU ID and full online and onsite NYU Bobst Library research and reference privileges, as well as an office at the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, space allowing.

German-Russian Forum offers internship program [Russia]

Journalism students in Russia can apply for an internship program in Germany.

The German-Russian Forum, in association with Moscow State University, is offering internships that will provide professional experience in German print and broadcast newsrooms. The internships run from July 12 to Sept. 13, 2020.

Fellows will also have an opportunity to take part in seminars on journalistic topics and a two-week intensive course in German language in the Goethe-Institut.

The fellowship covers travel, accommodations and health insurance and provides a EUR600 stipend.

Candidates must have a good command of the German language. Applicants must submit samples of their journalism work.

IFP offers Journalism training in Germany [Central, Eastern Europe]

Journalists fluent in German can participate in this program.

The Institute to Promote Journalistic Talent (IFP, in German) will host East Course, a three-week seminar designed for journalists from Central and Eastern Europe. The seminar will take place July 5 to 24, 2020 in Munich.

The training will address different journalistic forms and styles, including interviews, reportage, online research, online verification and mobile reporting. At the end of the training, participants will receive a certificate.

The seminar will be held in German. Journalists ages 19 to 32 who are working in print, radio or TV media are eligible to attend.

The tuition fee for the workshop, including meals and accommodation for three weeks, is EUR120 for participants from EU countries and EUR90 for participants from countries outside the European Union. Transportation expenses will be covered by a grant.

The Impact Journalist Award, organized by Ponte a Ponte and Faculdade Cásper Líbero, recognizes journalists across Brazil in four categories.

IJP offers Journalism exchange program [Africa, Germany]

Journalists ages 25 to 40 from Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Germany can apply.

The International Journalists' Programmes (IJP) are offering fellowships to up to six young Southern African journalists and up to five young German journalists. The Southern African-German Journalists‘ Bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain insights into the political, economic, cultural and social fabric of the host country.

For two months, Southern African delegates will have the chance to work in Germany, followed by German delegates in Africa. They will be integrated into the day-to-day journalism of their host newsroom while researching stories for their home media.

The delegates will receive a fixed payment of EUR3,000 to cover most of their travel, accommodation and living expenses.

Candidates must have a strong command of English. German is an advantage but not mandatory.

Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government is accepting applications for the Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Fellows are required to live in residence for one semester and will receive a US$30,000 stipend disbursed in four installments over the semester. Travel and living expenses are not covered by the center.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard is accepting entries for the Worth Bingham Prize, which honors investigative reporting of stories of national significance where the public interest is being ill-served.

These stories may involve state, local or national government, lobbyists or the press itself wherever there exists an "atmosphere of easy tolerance" that Worth Bingham described in his reporting on the nation's capital.

Submissions must have been published in a U.S. newspaper or magazine or on the newspaper or magazine’s website during the 2019 calendar year. Web-based news organizations that follow a strict code of journalistic ethics and publish original reporting on a regular basis may also submit entries. No broadcast-only entries are allowed.

The winner will receive US$20,000.

Submissions must be accompanied by a US$50 entry fee.

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University (NYU) is seeking applications for the World Journalist Fellowship.

The fellowship provides international journalists with two semesters of funding to study at one of the master’s programs at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, as well as a US$14,000 stipend.

Fellows can choose one of nine concentrations: business and economic reporting; cultural reporting and criticism; global and joint program studies; literary reportage; magazine writing; news and documentary; reporting the nation and New York; science, health and environmental reporting; and Studio 20.

The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) is inviting civil society organizations to apply for funding projects to advance and support democracy. Project grants range between US$100,000 and US$300,000.

Project proposals must fall under one of the following main areas: gender equality; community activism; rule of law and human rights; youth engagement; strengthening civil society's interaction with the government; media and freedom of information; tools for knowledge; and electoral processes.
