OSIWA calls for proposals on media initiatives [West Africa]

Local organizations based in West Africa can apply for funding.
The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) is accepting proposals to support initiatives in Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
Possible target areas include journalism, justice reform and the rule of law, the democratic practice and more. Proposals must promote investigative journalism and free, quality and independent media.
The amount of funding varies. In the event that OSIWA cannot fund the entire project budget, it may choose to fund part of it and request the grant seeker to source for the outstanding balance.
The deadline is April 30.

Chinese website seeks journalist [China]

Journalists with one to two years of experience in print media can apply for this position in Tianjin. 
Chinese website Sohu.com is hiring a journalist who will cover legal, financial and industrial issues. 
The reporter will attend industry events and write relevant press releases, conduct interviews and write articles, and collaborate with the team.
Candidates must have a bachelor's degree and be skilled at digging the news and providing diversified perspectives.

Wesleyan Writers Conference offers scholarships [Worldwide]

All writers, from inexperienced to very established, are encouraged to apply for scholarships and fellowships to attend a writing conference.
The 62nd annual Wesleyan Writers Conference will take place from June 13 to 17 on the Wesleyan University campus in Middletown, Connecticut. The event will cover a wide range of topics, including journalism, nonfiction, editing and translation, and writing about science and medicine.
There are several scholarships available especially for journalists who wish to attend the conference. Teaching fellowships are also available for writers who have completed book-length manuscripts.
The scholarships cover at least part, if not all, of the tuition for the conference. In order to apply, applicants must submit a registration form, a representative sample of their work in nonfiction, a letter of application expressing their interests and a resume.
International applicants are encouraged to apply, although travel fees may not be covered by the scholarships.
Applicants may choose to also submit a US$100 deposit that will secure their place at the conference, although this is optional if they are only applying for the scholarship. Submissions are accepted both electronically and by regular mail.
The deadline to apply for the scholarships is March 15.

Journalism Fellowship open [US]


Print, broadcast and online journalists in the United States can apply for a US$75,000 fellowship in New York.
The Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowships seek journalists who have covered international news for a 10-month period of writing and analysis at the Council of Foreign Relations.
The program enables the fellow to increase competency in reporting and interpreting events abroad and promotes the quality of responsible and discerning journalism.
Nomination letters should provide a brief description of the candidate's background and state why the candidate is an appropriate prospect for the fellowship.
Nominees who meet the criteria will be asked to submit an essay describing their experience as a foreign correspondent, a proposed plan for the fellowship and up to three work samples.
The deadline is March 1.

Journalism contest accepting entries [Uzbekistan]

Print, online and broadcast journalists can compete in this contest.
The Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan and the International Center for Journalists Training organize the National Award for Journalism "Oltin Qalam" (Golden Pen). The contest is dedicated to World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 3.
The contest will feature four categories: television, radio, print and online. Three winners will receive cash prizes and trophies in each category.
Entries must have been published or broadcast between March 31, 2017 and March 31, 2018.
The application deadline is April 10.
