Journalists from Latin America and the Caribbean interested in investigating and covering issues related to urban development and land policies can apply to attend this event.

The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy is organizing a forum focusing on urban development challenges April 23 to 25 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Selected candidates will explore local governance policies, housing, transport, sustainable cities, resilience and environmental challenges, land value and ownership, among other topics.

The organizer will cover travel, lodging and some meals.

Native American Journalism Fellowship seeks candidates [US]

American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian and First Nations college students pursuing media degrees can apply for this program.

The Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) is accepting applications for the Native American Journalism Fellowship (NAJF).

The fellowship enables students to deepen and broaden their reporting and multimedia skills while learning from tribal journalists and news industry professionals from across the country.

Fellows will participate in an on-site immersion newsroom during the 2020 National Native Media Conference in in Phoenix, Arizona, and also receive personalized hands-on multimedia training, mentorship and networking opportunities.

Thomson Foundation launch mobile journalism competition [Worldwide]

Anyone age 18 and older can enter this contest.

The Thomson Foundation, in partnership with Mojofest, has launched its 2020 mobile journalism competition.

Contestants must complete four specific assignments, one each week throughout March 2020: participate in a photowalk and share their photos; create and share two video sequences; record and share an interview; and create and publish a video story on a change-making member of their community.

The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Mojofest May 13 and 14 in London. The top contestants will be awarded a certificate of achievement.

Grants available for media development [Benin]

Individuals, nonprofits and nongovernmental organization can apply for this program.

The U.S. Embassy in Cotonou, Benin is accepting applications for its assistance grants in a variety of initiatives including entrepreneurship, media literacy and professional journalism.

Projects must promote media literacy and critical thinking or support the development of professional journalism, especially through community radio. 

Award amounts will vary between US$7,500 and US$20,000.

Flahertiana documentary film festival seeks submissions [Worldwide]

Filmmakers from around the world are invited to submit their works to an international film competition.

The International Documentary Film Festival
Flahertiana is accepting entries for its 2020 contest. The festival, named in honor of American filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty, will take place Sept. 18 to 24 in Perm, Russia.

Entries must reflect the documentary style of Robert Flaherty and his film "Nanook of the North." Submissions in languages other than English should include English subtitles. All submissions must have been released after Jan. 1, 2019.

The winner of the best documentary prize will receive RUB250,000 (US$3,736). Winners of the best new subject award and best artistic solution award will each receive RUB75,000 (US$1,120). Directors can choose to receive their cash prizes in rubles, dollars or euros.

The festival will cover transport costs and three days of accommodation in Perm for directors whose documentaries are selected for the international competition.

The deadline to submit films is May 10.

Fellowship on climate reporting available [Africa, North America, South America]


Journalists in Africa, North America and South America are invited to send a story pitch.

INKLINE is commissioning solutions-based stories about the climate crisis as part of its SJN–LEDE Fellowship.

The stories should cover innovative ways that communities are using to mitigate the impact of the climate crisis in the regions. The 250-word pitches must be in English. The final story should have about 2,000 words.

Selected journalists will receive payment for their stories and training from the Solutions Journalism Network.

The deadline is April 5.

One World Media seeks fellows [Worldwide]

Journalists and filmmakers interested in telling stories from developing countries can apply for this fellowship.

The One World Media seeks proposals for its fellowship. The program is open to nonfiction media across all platforms: film, print, audio, photojournalism and multimedia.

Twenty fellows will be selected this year, including 10 applicants anywhere in the world and 10 from across Africa.

Fellows receive a GBP1,000 (US$1,293) production grant, mentorship, training and networking opportunities.

Global business journalism program available [Worldwide]

English-speaking journalists worldwide can apply for a global journalism program in China.

The School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University offers a master of arts degree in global business journalism, which seeks to train future journalists who can help the public understand the complexities of global business and the economy.

The two-year program, a partnership between Tsinghua, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and Bloomberg News, is fully taught in English. Enrollment in the courses is about half international, half Chinese.

A limited number of scholarships are available to top applicants. Those interested in applying for a scholarship are encouraged to apply early.

The deadline has been extended to March 31.

Contest seeks reports for diverse western voices [US]

Journalists of color can submit a story pitch for this program.

High Country News, in partnership with PLAYA, has launched the Diverse Western Voices Award.

The award will support a project of deep reporting and narrative journalism based in the American West.

The winner will receive a two- to three-week residency at PLAYA in Oregon, a US$1,000 travel stipend, payment for the story and mentorship from a High Country News editor.

Reporting should take place between April and September.

EJC offers grants for reporting global developing challenges [Europe]

Media outlets in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom can apply for a grant to report on global development topics.

The European Journalism Centre (EJC) is accepting pitches for the latest round of the European Development Journalism Grants program.

EJC will award up to eight grants of up to EUR120,000 each.

Projects must address one or more of the first six Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on one or more of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) as defined by the United Nations and/or their development relations with key European donor countries.

The deadline is March 27.
