Portrait photography contest open [Worldwide]

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2017, organized by the National Portrait Gallery in London, is accepting entries. ​Applicants are encouraged to portray people with an emphasis on their identity as individuals.
The first place winner will receive GBP15,000 (US$19,462). One or more shortlisted photographers will be awarded cash prizes at the judges' discretion.
All selected photographers under the age of 30 are eligible for the John Kobal New Work Award. The winning photographer will receive GBP5,000 (US$6,487) and a commission from the Gallery to photograph a sitter connected with the U.K. film industry.
The entry fee is GBP28 (US$36.33) per photograph. Each applicant can submit up to six photographs.
The deadline is June 29.

CNN London offers internships [EU]

Recent broadcast journalism graduates or graduates from a related field seeking a career in journalism can apply for an internship in London. 
CNN hosts eight internships ranging from news gathering to special feature programs, digital and sports.
The next intern program will run from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31.
Candidates must be British/EU citizens or have the right to work in the United Kingdom long term.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty seeks freelance journalist [Central Asia]

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is looking for a freelance correspondent based in Central Asia.
The journalist will be expected to pitch and generate his/her own stories and work closely with RFE/RL's network of correspondents throughout Central Asia.
Candidates should have a strong background in the region. Fluency in Russian and/or local languages and experience with video and photo production are a plus.

Bursary covers safety training [Worldwide]

Independent journalists and documentary filmmakers who focus on human rights abuses can apply for funding.
The Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma is selecting candidates for the Portenier Human Rights Bursary, sponsored by filmmaker Giselle Portenier.
The award is open to freelancers worldwide, experienced or novice. Applicants must demonstrate a clear interest or track record in casting light on human rights abuses and an upcoming assignment or project with such a human rights focus. 
The winner will receive up to CAD3,000 (US$2,221) for hazardous environment training offered by the following approved course providers: AKEDart Center at Columbia Journalism School1st Options SecurityGlobal Journalist SecurityPilgrims GroupRemote TraumaTundra Group or TYR/Blue Mountain Group.

Scholarships available for audio storytelling workshop [US]

Transom, a platform for new public radio, will host its Fall 2017 Story Workshop Sept. 19 to Nov. 16 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
During the residential program, participants will produce a vox-pop audio piece, a radio promo, a profile of a creative person, based on WCAI’s Creative Life Series, a documentary feature; and one or more Sonic IDs. 
The cost ranges from US$8,820 to U$9,495, depending on housing. Scholarships will be available based on financial need, with a focus on diverse voices.

Fellowship available for reporting on peace building, conflict resolution in Africa [Worldwide]

The International Reporting Project (IRP) is accepting applications for reporting fellowships on issues related to peace-building and conflict resolution in Africa.
The fellowships will support stories in a variety of media, including print, online, radio, television, photography, blog posts, social media and video.
Topics may cover leadership; human rights initiatives; access to education, healthcare and judicial bodies; status of marginalized communities and familial hierarchies; women and gender; violence and threats to safety and security; migration, land rights and borders; climate change, food security and natural resources; and more.
Proposals can focus on any African country, though special consideration will be given to projects in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Mali, Sudan, South Sudan and Zimbabwe.
The deadline is June 30.

Scholarships available for course on reporting in crisis zones [Worldwide]

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma is organizing the course "Reporting safely in crisis zones" Oct. 19 to 22 in New York.  
Topics include risk assessment, digital security, emergency first aid, trauma care and self-defense.
The course fee is US$1,175. However, the Rory Peck Trust will provide a limited number of scholarships to offset the course fee. These may not be used for travel, lodging or related expenses.
Journalists who are employed full time by a news organization and others are encouraged to apply to attend the course, but will not be considered for a scholarship. 
The deadline is July 14.
