Funds for investigative journalism projects available [Mexico]

Freelance journalists residing in Mexico can apply for a reporting grant.

Quinto Elemento Lab has launched its third grant program for investigative journalism projects.

Entries must address aspects of the Mexican reality, and the resulting coverage must be relevant and intended to create an impact.

The organization will offer up to MXN85,000 to selected projects, as well as mentorship, edition, design, distribution strategy and production of each investigative piece.

The funds must cover reporters' salary, expenses derived from the investigation itself and travel expenses. The projects should be developed and published within two months.

Center for Health Journalism hosts Webinar on Toxic cities[Worldwide]

Journalists interested in health and environmental reporting are invited to attend this free program.

The Center for Health Journalism at the University of Southern California will host the webinar "Toxic cities: telling big stories on hidden risks" at 1 p.m. EDT on June 6.

The hourlong webinar will focus on innovative reporting and testing strategies that can result in urgent, high-impact stories.

The panelists are Wendy Ruderman, investigative reporter for Philadelphia Daily News and Philadelphia Inquirer; and Barbara Laker, also investigative Reporter for Philly Inquirer/Daily News. They co-authored the series “Toxic City,”  which exposed the dangers to children in Philadelphia of toxins in their homes, neighborhoods and schools.

Program focuses on photo projects [US]

Women photographers can apply for this new program.

We, Women seeks community engagement and collaborative photo-based projects that redefine how people understand and respond to urgent issues in the United States.

Possible topics include gun control, immigration, criminal justice, the environment, political participation, education, healthcare, housing, jobs and the economy, indigenous rights, religion and substance abuse.

Selected photographers will receive US$5,000 to US$10,000, mentorship and production support, and promotion and marketing of projects. Their work will be featured in the We, Women exhibition at Photoville Fall 2020 and a traveling exhibition beginning Fall 2020.

JIAS offers Writing fellowship [Africa]

Journalists, academics, poets and other writers can apply for this fellowship.

The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) is organizing its Fifth Writing Semester Feb. 3 to May 31, 2020.

The fellowship provides a quiet space for work, reflection and academic community-building in Johannesburg.

Fellow will receive accommodation, breakfast and lunch, access to the facilities of the nearby University of Johannesburg and a monthly stipend.

Documentary contest accepting entries [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur documentarians who live in one of the 38 megacities around the world are invited to enter this contest.

Megacities Shortdocs hosts an international contest with festivals held in megacities to support the making of short documentaries raising awareness about urban challenges and solutions.

Documentaries must be 4 minutes long and cover issues and local initiatives in a megacity. Possible topics include mobility, energy, health, accommodation, supply, business, security, communication, culture and education.

Megacities include Tokyo, Jakarta, Delhi, Seoul-Incheon, Manila, Mumbai, Karachi, Shanghai, New York, São Paulo, Beijing, Mexico City, Guangzhou-Foshan, Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto, Moscow, Dhaka, Cairo, Bangkok, Los Angeles, Kolkata, Buenos Aires, Tehran, Istanbul, Lagos, Shenzhen, Rio de Janeiro, Kinshasa, Tianjin, Lima, Paris, Chengdu, Lahore, London, Bangalore, Ho Chi Minh City, Nagoya, Chennai and Rhine-Ruhr.

The best shortdocs will be exhibited during the festivals in New York, Tokyo, São Paulo, Shanghai, Mumbai and Lagos. Winners will receive a trip to Paris and up to EUR2,000 (US$2,234).

Workshop focuses on criminal justice reporting [US]

Journalists interested in criminal justice reporting can apply for this free training.

Poynter, in partnership with The Marshall Project and the Vera Institute of Justice, is organizing "A journalist’s guide to covering jails" Sept. 18 and 19 in Phoenix.

Participants will learn the causes and consequences of local jail incarceration and explore some ways that communities are addressing the issue.

The program will be led by Al Tompkins, senior faculty for broadcast and online at Poynter.

Accepted applicants will receive most meals and hotel but must cover their own travel.

The deadline is July 29.

DGC seeks applications for Training program [Palestine]

Palestinian journalists ages 23 to 33 can apply for this five-week program.

The UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) is accepting applications for its annual training program, as part of a special information program mandated by the United Nations General Assembly.

The training will be held in November and December. Exact dates and location will be confirmed soon.

The program aims to provide hands-on skills training on media-related topics as well as expose the selected journalists to the work of the United Nations.

The United Nations will cover the costs of travel and accommodation.

 The deadline is June 19.
