Photo contest seeks entries [Worldwide]


Professional and amateur photographers can enter this contest.

Smithsonian magazine is accepting submissions for its annual photo contest.

Contestants can submit up to 15 photos to each of the following categories: the natural world, travel, people, the American experience, altered images and mobile photos.

The grand prize consists of US$2,500 and a trip. Each category winner, along with the readers' choice winner, will receive US$500.

LASA Media Award accepting nominations [Latin America, US]

LASA members and journalists across the region are invited to nominate candidates for this award.

The Latin American Studies Association announces the 2020 LASA Media Award for outstanding media coverage of Latin America.

These awards recognize long-term journalistic contributions to analysis and public debate about Latin America both in the United States and Latin America, as well as breakthrough journalism.

Nominees are accepted in several categories: Lifetime Achievement, books, media, article and more. The winners will be honored at the annual LASA Congress May 2020 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The deadline is Sept. 20.

ACSS offers grants [MENA]

Journalists, researchers and activists whose work focuses on Arab societies can apply for this program.

Funded by the Ford Foundation and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency(Sida), the Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is accepting submissions for its grants program on the theme of "Health and livelihoods in the Arab region: wellbeing, vulnerability and conflict."

Grants of US$20,000 will be available to individual researchers, up to US$35,000 for teams of researchers and US$50,000 for institutions.

Grants are intended to support a maximum of 18 months for individuals and teams from April 2020 to October 2021, and a maximum of 24 months for collectives and institutions starting April 2020 to April 2022.

The deadline is Nov. 17.

Weekly magazine seeks interns [US]

Aspiring journalists can apply for an internship in New York.

Weekly magazine The Nation is seeking interns for the winter/spring of 2020. Interns have the opportunity to write for TheNation.com and participate in career seminars with journalists, politicians and activists.

The internship is full time and take place Jan. 7 to July 3, 2020. Interns are paid US$525 per week. Housing and travel grants are available to those who need them in order to do the internship.

Contest on social innovation open [Africa]

Social entrepreneurs ages 18 to 35 can enter this contest.

The British Council and Ashoka organize the Global Social Thinkers contest, as part of the Impact!Africa Summit Dec. 4 and 5 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Contestants must share a story in 250 words or a video that showcases their journey transforming Africa. The shortlisted stories will be posted online for the public to choose the 10 best stories.

The winners will receive a two-day pass for the Summit, airfare and accommodations.

The deadline is Oct. 1.

Funds for projects on climate change available [Worldwide]

Media makers focusing on the effects of climate change can apply for a grant.

The Fledgling Fund will select three to four projects to receive an outreach and engagement grant  ranging from US$15,000 to US$25,000.

Possible projects include short-form and long-form documentary films as well as others forms of non-fiction storytelling. Projects should be well positioned to make an impact quickly and engage audiences around climate change through the lens of public health and economic justice.

Applicants must have a 501c3 fiscal sponsor based in the United States. Priority will be given to projects that seek to reach a U.S. audience and focus on American communities.

The deadline is Oct. 1.
