JDK offers fund for building Successful Careers in Journalism(UK)

The Journalism Diversity Fund is looking for people from diverse backgrounds who need help funding their journalism training. Bursaries are on offer for those with the potential to succeed in one of the most exciting and rewarding careers around.
The fund is aimed at people without the financial means to attend NCTJ-accredited journalism courses who can show they are either socially or ethnically diverse. All applicants to the fund will need to demonstrate a genuine commitment to journalism and the potential to be successful. The fund is administered by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).
Since its launch, the Journalism Diversity Fund has awarded over 200 bursaries to financially support NCTJ students’ training, which has helped many students forge successful careers in journalism.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants are responsible for ensuring they meet all of the following criteria:
  • provide proof they have secured a place on an NCTJ-accredited course starting in the academic year September 2017 – August 2018. Those who have already started a course are not eligible to apply – bursaries must be awarded prior to the course commencing. Please visit the schedule section for this year’s deadlines. Please note bursaries are not available for undergraduate and distance learning courses and bursaries must demonstrate value for money;
  • must come from a socially or ethnically diverse background;
  • be a British citizen residing in the UK;
  • must be able to demonstrate a genuine commitment and potential to be a successful journalist through a range of journalism-related work experience (due to the high standard of applicants, experience on a student newspaper is not sufficient);
  • must not be in receipt of any other bursary award.

Documentary film festival accepting entries [Worldwide]

The Northern Character International TV and Film Festival is organized with support from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation with the goal of uniting journalists and filmmakers of the Northern countries. The event will take place Nov. 23 to 25 in Murmansk, Russia.
The theme is the North's attraction: How does the North attract people and become their home for the whole life? Who or what keeps people in the North in severe climate conditions?
Contest categories include documentaries, TV programs, program/film about culture, and more. The winners will be awarded diplomas.
Films and programs must include English subtitles.
The deadline is Sept. 15.

Fellowship focuses on health policy reporting [Worldwide]

Image result for Health Systems GlobalProfessional journalists are invited to pitch a story idea on health systems for this fellowship.
Health Systems Global (HSG) has launched its Media Fellowships Program. Six journalists will be selected to report on health systems and health policy topics across the world. 
The fellowship will begin in January 2018, with fellows researching for a feature piece to be published in a major outlet before September 2018. The story will be considered for the inaugural Health Systems Global Media Prize.
Fellows will receive funding to attend the Fifth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Liverpool, United Kingdom, October 2018 and close collaboration and support from health systems research and policy experts. 
The deadline is Sept. 30.

Online course on communication and human rights open [Latin America, Spain]

The Instituto de Derechos Humanos de Cataluña (IDHC) organizes a new edition of its online course "Communication with a human rights approach, tools for a more human journalism." 
The course will be led by Patricia Simón and David Bondia from Sept. 4 to Oct. 15.
Participants will learn specific aspects of human rights as well as tools and resources for in-depth and accurate reporting with a gender-based and human rights-based approach.
Registration is ongoing until spots are filled. The cost is EUR150 (US$177) with discounts for students and others.

Magazine offers internships, fellowship [US]

Image result for High Country NewsJournalism students and recent graduates who want to report on natural resources, the environment and community issues can apply for this program in Paonia, Colorado.
High Country News is a nonprofit news publication that focuses on issues facing the western United States. Every year, the magazine offers four to six internship positions. The next session runs from January to June.
The organization provides free housing and a US$220 weekly stipend for interns and free housing, and a US$375 weekly stipend for fellows. To help defray moving costs, an additional US$500 travel stipend is available upon successful completion of the internship.
For all positions, a bachelor's degree or equivalent and some prior journalism experience and/or education are preferred. Photographic experience and familiarity with audio and visual programs such as Final Cut Pro and Flash, as well as radio or video experience are all pluses.
The deadline is Nov. 1.
