Social media and fact-checking program open [MENA]

Journalists across the Middle East and North Africa can apply for this program.

A new initiative from the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the
Facebook Journalism Project aims to empower 2,000 MENA journalists to use social media to verify information, engage audiences and protect themselves online.

The Social Media Solutions program will equip journalists with the latest tools to sort fact from fiction on social media platforms. The curriculum will cover four key areas: verification, security, engagement and storytelling.

The trainers will hold in-person workshops in Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. Webinars will be offered in Arabic to reach even more journalists across the MENA region.

Society of Professional Journalists seeks students' entries [US]

U.S. students can compete for this award.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) presents the Mark of Excellence Awards, honoring the best in student journalism.

Entries will be first judged on the regional level. First place regional winners will advance to the national competition and will be recognized at SPJ spring conferences. National winners will be showcased on SPJ's site.

The categories include newspapers, magazine, radio, television, art/graphics, online, video
and podcasts.

The contest is open to anyone studying toward an academic degree enrolled in a U.S. college or university in 2018. International SPJ student members may also enter.

The fee for SPJ members is US$10 per entry and for non-members, US$20 per entry.

The deadline is Jan. 15, 2019.

Grants for reporting subcultures available [Worldwide]

Women journalists with at least three years of experience can apply for this fund.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the Kim Wall Memorial Fund, established in honor of the award-winning Swedish journalist who covered important, underreported stories from around the world.

One US$5,000 grant will be awarded to fund stories on subcultures, broadly defined, and “the undercurrents of rebellion," carrying forward Wall's legacy. Grantees will also be paired with a mentor to assist them in their reporting.

The fund may cover reporting-related costs including travel (flights, ground transportation, drivers), logistics, visa fees and payment for fixers/translators.

COMESA accepting reports on trade, gender issues [Africa]

Journalists who covered regional integration projects in Africa can enter this competition.

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) organizes the COMESA Media Awards in four categories: print journalism, radio journalism, television journalism and online/new media.

Possible topics include trade, infrastructure (energy, transport, ICT), investments, gender issues and others, involving more than one COMESA member state or a national project that has a regional dimension.

Works must have been published or broadcast in 2018 in Arabic, English or French. Journalists must be nationals of COMESA member states.

The winners will receive sponsorship to the COMESA Heads of State Summit, a monetary prize, a trophy and a certificate.

Ghurba accepting paper submissions on migration [MENA]

Journalists, academics and students from the Arab world are invited to submit their papers to this conference in Warwick, United Kingdom.

"The Arab World as Ghurba: Citizenship, Identity and Belonging in Literature and Popular Culture" will take place June 21, 2019 at the University of Warwick. The event is funded by the Humanities Research Center and the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies,

The conference is interested in how migration to the Arab world appears in culture and what this documentation tells about the Arab world as a migrant destination.

Abstracts should have a maximum of 300 words.

Dart Center offers Fellowships for reporting conflict, violence [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists who want to deepen their knowledge of trauma and improve coverage of violence, conflict and tragedy can apply for a fellowship.

This year, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, will select 12 journalists as Dart Center Ochberg Fellows.

The next program will be held July 22 to 27, 2019 at Columbia University in New York.

Fellows attend background briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in the trauma and mental health fields; conversations with journalist colleagues on issues of ethics, craft and other aspects of professional practice; and a host of other opportunities for intellectual engagement and peer learning.

The fellowship covers travel to and accommodations in New York, meals and other expenses directly related to participation.

The application deadline is Feb. 6, 2019.

Journalism fellowships available [US]

Journalists, educators and education policy researchers can apply for a US$75,000 fellowship.

Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism presents the Spencer Fellowship for Education Journalism, supporting long-form journalism that enhances the public's understanding of the American education system.

Four fellows will be selected for one year of academic research at Columbia University with hands-on advising from education writing experts. Journalism projects must be published after completion.

Applicants must submit a resume, writing samples, a reporting project proposal, at least three recommendation letters and a coursework proposal.
