ABP Journalism prize seeks entries on mental illness [Brazil]

Print, broadcast and online journalists can compete for cash prizes.
The Brazilian Association of Psychiatry (ABP) has launched the fifth edition of the ABP Journalism Prize, which values the work of journalists who inform the public about mental illness, chemical dependency and psychiatry, combating prejudice against the mentally ill.
Works must have been published or broadcast between June 15 and July 31, 2018. The four categories are press, online, TV and radio.
The winners of each category will receive BRL5,000 each, as well as a trip to the awards ceremony on Oct. 17 in Brasília.
The deadline is July 31.

AFP organises African Fact-Checking contest [Africa]

Print, broadcast and online journalists whose works held public figures accountable can compete for cash prizes.
Africa Check, a project of the AFP Foundation, is accepting applications for the African Fact-Checking Awards. The awards honor journalism that exposes misleading claims made by public figures and institutions.
Works must be original pieces of fact-checking journalism first published or broadcast between Sept. 1, 2017 and Aug. 15, 2018 by a media house based in Africa.  Entries may have been published or broadcast in French or English.
The winners of best fact-checking report and best fact-checking series by a working journalist will each receive US$2,000, with two runners-up taking away prizes of US$1,000 each. The winner of best fact-checking report by a student journalist will receive US$1,000 and the runner-up, US$500. 
The deadline is Aug. 15.

European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs seeks entries [Worldwide]

Documentarians can apply for a training program to help them develop their projects.
The European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE) is accepting applications for its 2019 workshops. The three workshops will take place March 8 to 15 in Luxembourg, in June in Serbia and October in Germany.
EAVE is aimed at producers, both fiction and documentary, already working in the film and television industries who wish to begin to operate on a European wide basis by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up a pan-European professional network.
The participation fee for those with a developing project costs EUR3,000 (US$3,493). Scholarships are available.
The deadline is Aug. 31.

NED offers fellowship program [US]

Budding to midcareer young professionals working on foreign policy related issues can apply for this program.
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is selecting fellows for the Penn Kemble Forum on Democracy. The fellowship promotes bipartisan conversation among young foreign policy leaders in Washington.
The program is unpaid and nonresidential. Applicants must be based in Washington and available to attend the monthly seminars --to be held after working hours-- and additional events and meetings.
Fellows are expected to write one short paper on a Forum topic or a reflection of their experience. Select papers will be published on the NED website.
The deadline is Aug. 10.

Film festival on human rights accepting submissions [Russia]

Russian documentary filmmakers who focus on human rights can submit their works to this contest.
The Stalker International Film Festival on Human Rights, organized by the Russian Guild of Film Directors, will take place Dec. 5 to 10 in Moscow. 
Filmmakers may submit feature length and short films and documentaries (up to 52 minutes). Films must have been produced in 2017 or 2018.  
Awards include a prize for best non-feature film. The winning films will be included in the collection of the festival.
The deadline is Sept. 15.

Society for News Design offers webinars on news design [Worldwide]

Designers, editors and reporters interested in visual journalism can attend these online seminars.
Poynter's News University, in partnership with theSociety for News Design (SND), will offer a three-part series on news design: "Making emotional connections with local audiences through design" on July 16; "Secrets of a successful newsletter: lessons from The Lily" on July 17; and "Planning and design for the big story" on July 18. All three webinars will air at at 2:00 p.m. EDT.

The first webinar will show participants how to develop templates and design devices that lead to a visual identity as unique as their community.
The second webinar will share strategies used by The Lily’s newsletter, one of the highest average open rates of any newsletter produced by The Washington Post.
The third webinar will focus on how to create a plan flexible enough to cover the big story and adjust as more information pours in to ultimately tell the best story possible in the next day's paper.
Registration is ongoing and costs US$29.95 for each webinar. Those who enroll in all three webinars can receive a 20 percent discount. The webinars are free for SND members.

Action for Hope organizes cultural training workshop [MENA]

Journalists and others can apply to participate in this workshop in Broumana, Lebanon.
Action for Hope, a nonprofit organization focusing on distressed and displaced communities, is accepting applications for the Fa’ael training workshop that will be held on Sept. 20 to 30.
The training will cover cultural project design and management at difficult times. Topics include community definition, community needs assessment tools, community participation, cultural project design, cultural project planning and management, measuring impact and sustainability.
Participants will receive travel, accommodation and free registration.

OKP offers scholarships for journalism courses [Worldwide]


Midcareer journalists from several developing countries can apply for a scholarship to attend an RNTC course in the Netherlands.
The Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) is accepting applications for journalism courses at the Radio Nederland Training Centre (RNTC). The OKP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and run by the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC).
Candidates must be from one of these countries: Afghanistan, Macedonia, Albania, Mozambique, Armenia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, Benin, Nicaragua, Bhutan, Nigeria, Bolivia, Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Palestinian Territories, Burundi, Peru, Cambodia, Philippines, Colombia, Rwanda, Congo (DRC), Senegal, Cuba, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Georgia, South Sudan, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Sudan, Guinee, Suriname, India, Tanzania, Indonesia, Thailand, Jordan, Uganda, Kenya, Vietnam, Lebanon, Yemen, Liberia, Zambia, Mali and Zimbabwe.
The fellowships cover travel costs, accommodation and the course fee.
The deadline to apply for the fellowship program is July 13.

Reporting fellowship available [US]

Full-time print journalists, editors and photographers can apply for a fellowship.
The Alicia Patterson Fellowships, sponsored by the Alicia Patterson Foundation (APF), aim to foster, promote and sustain the best traditions of journalism in the United States. The fellowships provide support for journalists engaged in rigorous, independent and skeptical work that will benefit the public.
Grants are awarded for both one-year and six-month projects. Fellows receive US$40,000 for the full-year stipend and US$20,000 for the six-month fellowship. 
An additional fellow specializing in either science or environmental journalism will be selected as a Cissy Patterson fellow, in honor of publisher Cissy Patterson.
Non-U.S. citizens are also eligible, but must be working full time for U.S. print publications, either in the United States or abroad.
The application deadline is Oct. 1.
