Independent journalism podcast calls for pitches on disinformation [Worldwide]


Journalists can submit audio stories on the impact of disinformation on ordinary lives to this program.

Independent journalism podcast On Spec is commissioning three, 30-minute, character-driven stories on the topic of disinformation. Suggested topics include disinformation around climate change, the novel coronavirus and women’s rights.

Those interested must submit a 250-word pitch, covering how the reporter has a personal connection to the topic. Selected pitches will receive US$1,000 each to develop the story.

Pitches will not be accepted from Hong Kong, India, Russia and Turkey, which have already been featured in the program.

The deadline is Aug. 15.

Arab Council for the Social Sciences seeks papers on COVID-19 [MENA]

Journalists, students and academics from the Arab world are invited to submit their papers.

The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) Beirut School of Critical Security Studies working group and Security in Context are seeking submissions about borders in light of COVID-19.

Possible topics include historical and critical readings of borders to help understand the current moment, what does the shutting down of borders imply for millions of workers, migrants and refugees who rely on border crossings for their survival, and more.

Submissions may have up to 2,500 words in English or Arabic.

Authors of papers selected for publication will receive a modest honorarium.

The deadline is Aug. 15.

Thomson Reuters Foundation seeks reports slavery [Latin America, Asia]

Journalists who first published a story about modern slavery by a media organization in Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Bangladesh, India or Cambodia can apply.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation organizes the Stop Slavery Award, which recognizes companies that demonstrate integrity, courage and innovation in eradicating forced labor from their supply chain.

The contest has a media category, open to journalists who have produced a highly impactful story, raising awareness and informing society about modern slavery and human trafficking.

The winner will be invited to attend the award ceremony in March 2021 in London.

The deadline is Oct. 2.

Journalism grants available [Europe]

Teams of journalists and/or news organizations can apply for this grant.

Investigative Journalism for Europe (IJ4EU), managed by a consortium led by the International Press Institute (IPI), updated its call for cross-border investigative journalism projects in the EU and EU candidate countries.

The Publication Support scheme will provide short-term support of up to EUR10,000 for the completion of cross-border investigative projects that are already underway.

Teams can now be based in only one EU member state or EU candidate country.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until Sept. 18.
