Fundación Gabo offers Workshop on coverage of forced displacement [Latin America]

Journalists residing in Latin America with at least three years of professional experience can apply for this workshop in Spanish.

Fundación Gabo and ACNUR are organizing the online training "Forced displacement: covering the Central American case," Oct. 5 to 16.

Participants will explore conceptual and ethical principles to produce quality journalism pieces that contribute to the dialogue and constructive interaction among refugees, migrants and host societies.

The instructors are Ginna Morelo and Óscar Martínez. 

Twelve journalists will be selected. After the course they will have the opportunity to participate in the Laboratory of New Narratives on Refugees and Migrants, which will offer mentoring and research grants.

Journalism internships, fellowship available [US]

Journalism students and recent graduates who want to report on natural resources, the environment and community issues can apply for this program in Paonia, Colorado.

High Country News is a nonprofit news publication that focuses on issues facing the western United States. Every year, the magazine offers four to six internship positions. The next session will run from mid-January to mid-June 2021.

The organization provides a US$300 weekly stipend for interns and a US$520 weekly stipend for fellows. There is also housing and other support, including the opportunity to work remotely from within the Western United States.

Photo contest focuses on COVID-19 [Worldwide]

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with Omidyar Network, has launched the contest "COVID-19: The bigger picture."

The contest seeks photos that capture the human impact of the pandemic, shedding light on the many underreported dynamics relating to COVID-19.

Three contestants will be selected to participate in an online photojournalism masterclass run by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and work alongside its news team on a photo story that will be shared via the Reuters news agency.

The Orkhan Dzhemal Media Safety Academy, organized by the Justice for Journalists Foundation, offers a course on the basics of media security. The academy is named in the memory of one of three Russian journalists who were murdered in 2018 while working in the Central African Republic.

The program covers four main aspects of journalists' safety: physical, cyber, legal and psychological security.

This course is self-paced and can be taken at any time. The estimated time to complete the course is one month.

IJ4EU offers Investigation Support Scheme [Europe]

Teams of journalists based in at least two EU member states or at least one EU member state and one official candidate country can apply.

Investigative Journalism for Europe (IJ4EU), managed by a consortium led by the International Press Institute (IPI), has launched a new call for its Investigation Support Scheme.

The program aims to assist cross-border journalistic projects in the European Union and EU candidate countries. Grants range from EUR5,000 to EUR50,000.

The resulting stories must be published by media outlets in at least two different countries.

Grants for media projects available [Worldwide]

Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can apply.

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.

NED encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transition.

Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000.

NED is interested in proposals from organizations for nonpartisan programs that seek to: promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency.

Human Rights Watch offers fellowships [Worldwide]

Recent graduates in journalism, international relations or law at the master's level or beyond can apply for a human rights fellowship program.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) presents the Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship. Fellows will work with HRW in New York or Washington monitoring human rights developments worldwide, conducting on-site investigations, drafting reports, media outreach and more.

The yearlong fellowships begin September 2021 and offer a US$60,000 salary with benefits.

Ideal candidates possess a strong background in human rights with an intent to pursue a career in the field. Requirements include research and field experience, analytic skills and English fluency. Proficiency in a second language is a plus.

ACES: The Society for Editing and the Dow Jones News Fund have established the Richard S. Holden Diversity Fellowship.

The fellowship aims to enable journalists to receive the training and support they need for a faster track to success. Initially, three fellows will each receive up to US$3,000 to cover  travel, course tuition, conference fees or other costs related to career development and skill building.

Journalism 360° Challenge, a joint initiative of the Knight Foundation and the Online News Association (ONA), seeks immersive journalism ideas for a chance to win a share of US$100,000.

Proposals should use virtual, augmented, mixed reality or 360° video, discovering new ways to engage audiences and advance the field of journalism. 

Winners will receive up to US$10,000 in funding to test, refine and build out an immersive storytelling project.

Helen Bernstein Book Award seeks nominations [US]

The New York Public Library presents the Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism. Factors for consideration include the book's significance, its influence on public policy and a high standard of reporting and writing.

Books scheduled for publication between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020 are eligible. Works of fiction, anthologies, collections of columns or articles are not allowed.

Books must be nominated by publishers or agents, not the authors. Nominations must include an application form, 12 copies of the book, reviews and the author's bio.

Énois, offers Newsroom diversity program [Brazil]

Newsrooms in Brazil, except in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, can apply for this program.

Énois, in partnership with the Google News Initiative, has launched the Newsroom Diversity program.

During one year, the newsrooms will receive training on topics such as the emotional balance of journalists, election reporting techniques, strategic diversity in news management and measuring the impact of the work.

Internews is awarding grants as part of its Information Saves Lives Rapid Response Fund.

The grants will support the production of media content on the COVID-19 pandemic, published in national languages in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Grant amounts range from EUR1,000 to EUR4,000.

Projects should last up to six months.

The Africa Regional Services in the Bureau of African Affairs of the U.S. Department of State will sponsor an organization that will provide digital education to African journalists.

The program seeks to promote improved knowledge of newsgathering strategies, media ethics, journalist safety, investigative reporting, and the business of journalism. 

The award recipient must organize three conferences in French, Portuguese and English and engage at least two different American journalists as presenters .

Awards may range from US$200,000 to US$400,000 for a period of 12 to 18 months.

CMPF offers Scholarships for journalism training on COVID-19 [Europe]


Journalists from EU member states, accession and neighboring countries can apply for a scholarship to attend this online training.

The Centre for Media Pluralism and Freedom (CMPF) at the European University Institute is organizing the ninth edition of the annual School for Journalists and Media Practitioners Oct. 19 to Nov. 20. 

This year's edition will cover "Media facing the pandemic: COVID-19." Topics include freedom of expression, freedom of the media and COVID-19 in the European Union and beyond; media market sustainability and alternative business models revenues after COVID-19; investigative journalism and COVID- 19; alternative and accessible technologies to fight disinformation and to sustain ethical journalism; and practice day – data journalism for COVID-19.

At the end of the training, the CMPF will offer up to EUR1,000 to three transnational investigation projects resulting from the program.

Registration costs EUR300. Anyone from around the world can register, but scholarships covering the fee are available only to candidates from EU member states, accession and neighboring countries.

Gabo Foundation offers funds for investigative reports on drugs [Latin America]

Journalists working or collaborating with the media in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Mexico can apply for this call.

The Gabo Foundation, with support from the Open Society Foundations, is organizing the second edition of the Fund for Investigative Journalism and New Narratives on Drugs.

The initiative will provide US$2,000 to US$6,000 to reporting projects that broaden the perspectives with which drugs are addressed in the region, and that enhances stories on public health, human rights, youth and women, the environment, and the rural context of illegal substances.

Applicants can enter in four categories: investigative journalism, local journalism, innovative journalism and collaborative journalism.

Up to 22 scholarships will be awarded. Each journalist or team will have a maximum of five months to research and produce the final version of their work.

Journalism competition focuses on science, technology [Russia]

Russian journalists and media outlets can compete in this contest.

The Russian Venture Company organizes the Tech in Media 2020 contest for journalism focusing on science and technology.

The contest's main topic is how technologies help combat COVID-19 and the effect of the pandemic on the world.

The competition has three thematic areas: biotechnology and medicine, new education and communication methods, and venture capital investments. Each area includes three categories – for text, broadcast and online content.

Entries must have been published or aired between Nov. 1, 2019, and Oct. 30, 2020.

Winners in each category will receive RUB100,000.
