Applications are open for LUIS VALTUEÑA International Humanitarian Photography Competition that is conducted by Doctors of the World–Médicos del Mundo (MdM-Spain).
Themes
Photographs must be related to any of the following themes: humanitarian action, international cooperation, social exclusion, human rights violations, armed conflicts, natural disasters, refugee and immigrant populations or socially excluded groups.
Award Information
  • The winner will receive a project grant of 6,000 euros (amount before tax, which depends on the winner’s nationality and situation) to develop a photography project composed of at least 50 photos and a 30 minute video shoot related to the work of MdM-Spain, whether in Spain or in other countries where the organization is undertaking humanitarian action or international cooperation programs.
  • The winner together with MdM-Spain will define the objectives and the development of the project, taking into account common interests and the operative security conditions related to possible destinations.
  • The amount of the grant should cover all expenses needed to develop the project. Once the project’s terms are settled, MdM-Spain will not demand an account of those expenses. The grant will be given in three parts: 50% after the judges’ decision, 25% when the project starts and the remaining 25% when the project concludes.
Eligibility Criteria
The competition is open to adult amateur and professional photographers of any nationality.

Photographs must be sent in *JPEG format via WeTransfer. The digital images must not bear any mark identifying the entrant. The images will be sent by E-mail with the subject line: XXI PREMIO LUIS VALTUEÑA + ENTRANT’S NAME AND SURNAME Along with the photographs, entrants must always submit a completed entry form downloadable.

Contest open to editorial cartoonists [Worldwide]

The United Nations is accepting entries for the Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards.
Submissions should reflect fundamental UN principals, the importance of human dignity, mutual respect and friendship among nations, as well as economic consideration and environmental responsibilities toward each other.
Entries for these awards may be made by any professional individual and should consist of political cartoons printed in any publication published anywhere, in any language. The entry must consist of reproductions only. The cartoon reproductions will be accepted only as published, with the name of publication, language and date included, accompanied by a newspaper reprint and translated into English.
The first place winner will receive US$10,000. The second place winner will receive US$5,000 and the third place winner, US$3,000.
Submissions must have been published between Sept. 1, 2016 and Oct. 15, 2017.
The application is Nov. 15.

Mother Jones offers fellowship [US]

Mother Jones organizes the Ben Bagdikian Fellowship Program for journalists who want experience investigating national stories. 
The upcoming fellowship will begin Dec. 1 and last six months. 
The program offers a crash course in investigative journalism. The fellow will work on researching, fact-checking, strategic projects and more.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 1.

Deadline approaching: Volt Data Lab fellowship [Brazil]

The Volt Data Lab seeks candidates for its data journalism fellowship.
The fellow will help to manage Volt's social networks; conduct surveys and organize data; produce graphics and texts;and study programming.
The fellowship offers BRL900 per month and a CodeAcademy course. The selected journalist will work four hours a day, Monday through Thursday, from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15.
The deadline is Sept. 5.

ICFJ seeks Knight International Journalism Fellow [India]

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is looking for a journalist for a six-month Knight International Journalism Fellowship to help strengthen coverage around these issues in Indian newsrooms.
The fellow will work with the program's data journalism and multimedia specialists to lead the design and execution of a series of gender and development-focused storytelling projects at top Indian newsrooms, ensuring maximum organizational and societal impact and best possible audience engagement
Candidate must be fluent in English and Hindi and have experience leading projects with impactful storytelling.
The fellowship will be a year long, based in New Delhi and supervised by current ICFJ Knight Fellow Nasr ul Hadi and the ICFJ Knight team in Washington.

Knight Center offers online course on crafting data stories [Worldwide]

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting the Big Online Course (BOC) "Crafting data stories: a hands-on, step-by-step workshop building real data narratives."
The course will be taught from Sept. 18 to Oct. 29 by Heather Krause, founder and principal data scientist of Datassist
Participants will learn how to build a draft of a data story; develop a data frame of mind; find a dataset that can answer a relevant question; understand their dataset; conduct a beginning analysis of the dataset; and more.
Although this course is at a beginner level, students are expected to have basic working knowledge of and access to Excel, Tableau or R.
Registration costs US$95 and is ongoing, but spots are limited.
