Photo contest highlights Sustainable Development Goals [Worldwide]

The United Nations Information Center, Tokyo (UNIC Tokyo) and Sophia University, in partnership with Getty Images Japan, are organizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Student Photo Contest 2017.
Contestants must reflect on sustainable development from their own perspective and express what it means to them through a photo snapshot. Entries that depict elements of SDGs in their own community are encouraged.
The grand prize winner will receive JPY100,000 (US$902), photo equipment and other prizes. There will also be three awards of excellence, worth JPY20,000 (US$180) each, and a special award of JPY5,000 (US$45).
The deadline is Aug. 30.

Politico seeks interns [US]

Politico magazine is hiring interns for its magazine, breaking news desk, politics desk and Politico Pro policy teams. The next internship program runs from January to May.
Interns must be enterprising and creative journalists who want to report, write and research for an audience of political and policy junkies.
Candidates should have previous newsroom experience, work well under pressure and have an avid interest in Washington.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty hosts documentary film competition [Russia]

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is launching "Young and free," a short documentary contest focusing on the lives of the young generation in Russia.
Documentaries must be 6 to 12 minutes long and must be produced in the territory of the Russian Federation between Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, 2017.
The winner will receive a cash prize of RUB100,000.
The deadline is Oct. 5.

Applications Open for Youth4Regions Media Programme

The European Commission is conducting a competition entitled “Youth4Regions Media Programme” amongst media students across Europe. The European Commission’s Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy seeks to encourage students in journalism to communicate on concrete projects co- funded by the European Regional Development and Cohesion Funds.
The lucky winners will be offered a chance to come to Brussels as a part of the media pool communicating on one of the major events of the year: the European Week of Regions and Cities taking place in Brussels on 9–12 Oct 2017.
Objectives
Specific objectives include:
  • fostering young journalistic productions to promote knowledge of the European Union;
  • creating a space for debate, share values and ways of working;  enhancing the links between European institutions and youth.
Eligibility Criteria
  • All students in journalism based in the EU are invited to participate in the competition.
  • Minimum age requirement: 18 years old.
  • All selected young journalists will be requested to provide a copy of their student card to prove their registration in a journalism school/university.
  • The short articles must be at least 400 words and may not exceed 1000 words.
  • Only written contributions will be accepted.
  • Applications must be submitted in English.
  • Team applications will not be accepted, only individual applications are accepted.
  • The European Commission reserves the right to use the articles submitted in presentation materials, with the media, and to reproduce them in any form.
  • The Jury will be composed by officials from the European Institutions, working in the media/journalism/communication fields.
  • The jury’s decision is final and without appeal. The jury reserves the right to reject any entry that does not comply with the requirements of the competition.
