MURDER OF NTA REPORTER: ONE DEATH TOO MANY SAYS IPC AS GROUP EXPRESSES SHOCK

The International Press Centre, Lagos-Nigeria has condemned the murder of Mr. Lawrence Okojie a reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority, Benin City, capital of Edo State-Nigeria, who was allegedly killed by gunmen on the night of Saturday July 8, 2017.

Media reports said the deceased was dropped off by NTA staff bus at Ogunola Junction in Benin around8p.m on Saturday and thereafter called to inform his wife that he was on his way home. But several hours later his wife could not reach him leading to apprehension and search that led to the discovery of his corpse in a morgue in the city on Sunday night.

The Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade described the killing of the journalist as shocking, unfortunate and therefore deserving of urgent investigation. 

“It is one killing too many. It is very sad that journalists are still being murdered in cold blood with no one so far prosecuted and convicted for the acts”, Mr. Arogundade said adding that the Police should make the case of journalist Okojie a turning point. 

Mr. Arogundade also said the death of journalist Okojie has again reinforced the need for media stakeholders to meet and brainstorm on measures to safeguard the life of journalists and other media professionals while putting up stout defense of media freedom in Nigeria.

Climate Tracker sends journalists to climate change conference [Worldwide]

Young journalists can apply for a travel fellowship.

Climate Tracker is inviting budding journalists to write inspiring stories and publish them in a media outlet for a chance to win a fully-funded trip to the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) in Bonn, Germany.

The contest has three publishing windows between July 1 and Sept. 30, during which participants must write at least one article about a specific topic — at least three articles in total. The topics are "The clean energy revolution," "Supporting climate finance" and "Climate and health."

The best five writers will attend the conference and get paid to deliver a certain amount of articles about certain topics. They will also receive personalized training to improve their publishing skills.

Online workshop focuses on narrative journalism [Latin America, Spain]

Journalists, students and anyone interested in improving their storytelling skills can register for this workshop in Spanish.

Escuela de Periodismo Portátil will offer the course "Writing against time," with Argentine journalist Federico Bianchini. The online workshop will run for five weeks beginning July 25.

Participants will learn storytelling techniques to produce well-rounded stories on a strict deadline.During the five-week workshop, students will work on the same texts, which will then be published on the school's website.

The cost is US$100 until July 20, and US$120 until July 25. Registration is ongoing, but spots are limited.

Social media conference open [MENA]

Students and young professionals with an active interest in cultural cooperation, mass media, communication and new technologies are invited to this conference in Amman, Jordan.

“Youth Without Borders” and “We Are Jordan” organize the conference "Social Media Challenge - Youth vs. Culture" in the Middle East, which will take place Aug. 16 to 20.

The conference aims to develop a better understanding of media effects and challenges that arise as a result of using technology. 

Registration costs EUR250 (US$285), but includes accomodation, meals, local transportation and an entertainment trip. 

The deadline is Aug. 10.
