International sports film festival accepting entries [Worldwide]

Filmmakers worldwide are invited to submit their documentaries and feature films on issues in sports.

The International Festival of Sports Movies Krasnogorski will take place May 16 to 21 in Moscow. The festival is run by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Moscow Regional Government.

The festival program includes feature and documentary films on sports subjects produced not earlier than 2017.

Submissions in languages other than English and Russian should include a translation in English or Russian.

There will be winners in the following categories: plot, story, character, extraordinary people, documentary, director and feature film. All winners will receive trophies.

IWMF offers human rights fellowship for women journalists [Worldwide]

Print, broadcast and online women journalists who focus on human rights and social justice can apply for a fellowship.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications for the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, named for the 1998 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner and Boston Globe correspondent who was killed in Iraq in May 2003.

The selected journalist will spend an academic year in a tailored program with access to MIT's Center for International Studies and media outlets like The Boston Globe and The New York Times.

Applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in journalism. Non-native English speakers must also have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program. Freelance journalists may apply.

A stipend will be provided, and expenses, including airfare, housing and health insurance, will be covered.

The application deadline is March 7.

Thomson Reuters Foundation offers course on reporting vulnerable children [Europe]

Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply to attend this free program.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is offering the course "Reporting on vulnerable children in care," as part of the Caring for Vulnerable Children in a Fractured World program.

The course will take place March 25 to 26 in Zurich. Participants will explore the risks faced by vulnerable children, and different domestic and international strategies to protect them.

Journalists working in media outlets across Europe are eligible. Selected applicants are expected to publish an article in order to graduate from the course with a certificate from the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The organizer will cover travel, meals and subsistence costs.

The deadline is Feb. 21.

University essay contest open [Africa]

African nationals enrolled in higher education institutions based in Africa and in the diaspora can enter this contest.

The Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa hosts an essay competition highlighting peace and security challenges faced across the continent.

This year's theme is “Political dynamics in the horn of Africa: nurturing the emerging peace trends.” Essays must be written in English or French.

The authors of the three winning essays will attend the Tana Forum on May 4 and 5 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. They will also receive mentorship from experts based at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS).

The deadline is Feb. 28.

Earth Journalism Network offers grants for stories on illegal wildlife trafficking [Europe]

Journalists interested in monitoring and investigating the illegal wildlife trade in Europe can apply for a grant.

The Earth Journalism Network is offering reporting grants as part of its Investigating Wildlife Trafficking project.

Journalists must have prior experience covering wildlife crime. Investigations across borders, nationalities and languages are encouraged.

The grants range from US$4,000 to US$10,000.

NED offers grants for media projects [Worldwide]

Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can apply.

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions.

NED encourages applications from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies and countries undergoing democratic transition.

Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000.

NED is interested in proposals from organizations for nonpartisan programs that seek to: promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency.

The deadline is March 15.

Wikimedia Foundation hosts photo contest [Africa]

Professional and amateur photographers can enter this contest.

Wiki Loves Africa is an annual contest, hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, where people across Africa can contribute photos about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the foundation.

This year, the competition seeks submissions about the theme "Play!," which can be representations of joyful and serious games, sport and recreation in the form of board or mental games, physical fun or contests, playful interactions, theatrical and musical performances, etc.

The first, second and third place winners will receive US$1,000, US$800 and US$500. Two other categories ­–women in sport and culturally specific or traditional formal forms of play– offer a US$500 prize each.

Tamkeen launches journalism contest [Jordan]

Tamkeen has launched its best media report competition on labor migration and refugees.

The contest seeks to raise awareness of refugees' rights, encouraging quality reporting on labor migration and refugees’ issues in Jordan.

Submissions must be published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2018 and March 15, 2019, and must include creative tools such as
infographics and data analysis.

 The top three winners will receive US$1,400, US$916 and US$493, respectively.
