Cairo International Film Festival accepting entries [MENA]

Filmmakers, curators and institutions are invited to participate in this festival in Cairo.

The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) is accepting submissions for its 42nd edition, which is scheduled to take place Nov. 19 to 28.

There are seven categories: best producer, best director, best first and second work, best screenplay, best actor, best actress and best artistic contribution.

The festival’s management will be guided by the Egyptian government and the World Health Organization to ensure the necessary safeguards and protections are in place to ensure guests’ and participants’ safety as a result of the pandemic.

The deadline is Aug. 31.

Independents in Radio offers scholarship [Worldwide}

Producers and program makers who self-identify as part of a minority group can apply for this remote program.

The Association of Independents in Radio (AIR) is accepting candidates for the New Voices Scholarships. The program seeks to identify and support minority media makers at the beginning of their public media careers.

This year's program will take place remotely from July to December. Scholars receive a stipend and resources as they work with mentors and build their capacity as media change-makers.

Applicants don't have to be U.S. citizens, but the content will be in English and focus primarily in the United States.

Media Development Foundation seeks investigative stories [Ukraine]

Investigative journalists can submit print, video and digital content to this contest.

Ukraine's investigative journalism contest is organized by the Media Development Foundation and the Yanukovych Leaks project.

Submissions must have been published or broadcast in Ukrainian media between June 8, 2019 and June 8, 2020.

The contest has two categories: the main prize and a special award.

The winner in the main prize category will receive a trophy and a cash prize of EUR1,000.

Registration ongoing for online workshop on data journalism [Latin America]


Journalists with or without experience in data journalism can register for this online workshop in Spanish.

The Center for Digital Journalism (CFPD) at the University of Guadalajara will offer a data journalism course Aug. 31 to Nov. 15.

Participants will learn how to extract data, clean it, put it into context, combine it, verify it and make it work inside a story and an investigation. The workshop will also address the basics of data visualization. The instructor is Hassel Fallas.

The cost is MXN3,800 for Mexicans and US$190 for those living outside Mexico.

The deadline to register is Aug. 16.

Grants for cross-border investigative reporting available [Europe]

Professional journalists who have an idea for research on European affairs can apply for funding. ​​​

Journalismfund.eu organizes the 2020 European Cross-Border Grants to support cross-border investigative journalism in the European Union.

The grants are intended for teams of professional journalists from at least two different countries that are members of the Council of Europe.

A total of EUR175,000 will help investigative reporting that is of relevance to European target groups. Costs must be related to journalistic research, including travel, translation, access to pay-databases or simply time to research.

There are three application rounds in 2020. The next deadline is July 15.

BBC: Vacancy exists for journalist [Brazil]

Journalists who are fluent in Portuguese and English can apply for this position in London.

The BBC seeks a journalist to join its Brazilian service. 

Responsibilities include researching, reporting, writing, translating, editing and adapting stories and program material for BBC Brasil.

Candidates must have a good understanding of international affairs as well as Brazilian affairs, sharp editing skills and the ability to respond to breaking news. Digital video experience will be an advantage.

Journalism fellowships available [US]


Journalists with at least three years covering science, technology, the environment or medicine can apply for this remote fellowship.

The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT is accepting candidates for the KSJ Project Fellowships for the 2020-21 academic year.

These fellowships are designed to support independently conceived projects: books, investigations and documentaries.

Candidates can select a nine-month, US$40,000 fellowship from September 2020 to May 2021; a four-month, US$20,000 fellowship from September 2020 to December 2020; or a four-month, US$20,000 fellowship from February 2021 to May 2021.

The deadline is June 30.

KAS seeks applicants for Water Journalism Academy [MENA]

Environmental journalists and other media professionals across the MENA region can apply for this virtual training.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s (KAS)'s Regional Program Energy Security and Climate Change Middle East and North Africa (REMENA), in partnership with Cewas, is accepting applications for the Water Journalism Academy.

The training, which be held Aug.10 to Sept. 2, aims to build and strengthen the capacities needed to develop and implement sustainable solutions for the water and sanitation sector.

The program comprises a four-module training and co-creation workshop bringing together media professionals with key stakeholders of the water and environmental sectors on constructive water reporting, follow-up coaching and a regional competition for media pieces that make a meaningful contribution to improve water management across the region.

The deadline is July 2.
