CUNY launches Resilience Journalism Fellowship [Worldwide]

The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is organizing the new Resilience Journalism Fellowship Oct. 22 to 27 in New York.
The program will focus on the science of climate change and resilience. In addition to classroom training, fellows will kayak in Jamaica Bay and ride bicycles on city streets, searching across New York for solutions to some of the world’s most difficult environmental problems.
Fellows will receive lodging, tuition and reasonable travel costs, along with most meals.
The deadline is Aug. 31.

UNDP hosts Open Data Media Camp [Romania]

The UNDP's Moldova Social Innovation Lab (MiILab) will host the 2017 Open Data Media Camp Sept. 13 to 17. The exact location will be announced soon.
The program will feature capacity building activities, close mentoring, follow-up and interactive discussions focusing on work with data, value-finding and creation of stories using open data, technical skills for basic data manipulations, and more.
Six participants will be awarded with a US$1,000 fellowship, based on submission of a brief research proposal, and a four-day study visit in Slovakia to enhance their experience in using open data.
The event is free of charge, and accommodation, meals and transport costs are covered.

Fund for Investigative Journalism: Diverse Journalists in Independent Investigative Reporting

The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University are seeking applications for a project designed to broaden opportunities for diverse journalists in independent investigative reporting.
The initiative invites applications from two communities:
  •      Journalists of color
  •       Women journalists

Pioneered with support from the Ford Foundation, this is the second consecutive year that grants and matching fellowships will be offered to help journalists of diverse backgrounds widely recognized as underrepresented in the ranks of U.S. independent investigative reporters to report and write important stories about unreported or underreported social justice issues.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Applications from women and journalists of color working in any type of media: print, audio, video, online will be considered.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens but can be reporting from abroad.

Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship calls for applications [Latin America]

Beginning to midcareer journalists interested in digital media can apply apply for a three-week program in the United States.
The International Center for Journalists offers fellowships for two journalists from Latin America to improve their digital skills in specialty reporting in areas such as immigration, environment, science and technology or business.
The 2017 Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 10. The fellowship begins with a three-day orientation in Washington, followed by a two-week assignment in the newsroom of an English-language media organization in the United States, where they will conduct reporting in a specialty area or on a specific project they have proposed in their application.
Applicants should outline what specialized topical area of reporting they want to strengthen and what technical skills they want to improve. They must demonstrate enough proficiency in the English language to function and work in an English-language environment.
The deadline is Aug 8.

Press photo competition open [Uganda]

The Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU), in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, is seeking entries for the Uganda Press Photo Award. 
The contest has seven categories: news, daily life, creative, portrait, sports, nature and story. Images must have been taken between Sept. 1, 2016 and Sept. 1, 2017.
The overall winner will receive a Canon EOS 7D Mark II DSLR camera. There will be prizes for the runners-up.
The deadline for submissions is Sept. 1.
