Summer school for investigative journalists open [Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia]

The Summer School on Investigative Reporting, organized by the Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga, will take place Aug. 17 to 19 in Riga, Latvia.
The program will cover ethics of investigative journalism, verification, interviewing, reporting on organized crime and corruption and more.
The early-bird registration fee, before May 20, is EUR350. The regular registration fee is EUR385.
Participants from the Baltic, EU Eastern Partnership and CIS countries are eligible for a scholarship provided by the Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation. Scholarship includes registration fee (EUR350) and accommodation for participants traveling to Riga.
The registration deadline is June 20.

Nominations open for Free Press Awards [Worldwide]

Free Press Unlimited, a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands, is accepting nominations for the Free Press Awards.
The awards aim to honor journalists who risk everything to bring the news to the public, media pioneers who pave the way for equality and justice and those who persevere under the most difficult circumstances.
The categories are newcomer of the year and most resilient journalist of the year.
Prizes include a media scholarship for the newcomer of the year and EUR15,000 (US$16,344) for the most resilient journalist. Both winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Netherlands.
The deadline is Aug. 1.

Barcelona hosts Mobile Journalism Conference [Spain]

The Chair of Studies in Information and Communication Sciences at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya organizes the Mobile Journalism Conference #MoJoBCN, aimed at exploring the integration of mobile technology in Spanish journalism.
The conference will take place May 24 at the Mobile World Center Barcelona.
The meeting will bring together leading media professionals and academics to share and analyze the latest trends and innovations in mobile journalism.

Fellowship for political journalism in Germany available [MENA]

Image result for International Journalists' ProgrammesYoung journalists from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine can apply for a two-month reporting fellowship in Germany.
The International Journalists' Programmes offer a travel and work fellowship designed to enable five young journalists to familiarize themselves with political issues in Germany.
The fellowship begins Nov. 2, 2017 with an introductory event in Berlin joined by the German fellows. Fellows will then be placed with a German media outlet for at least two months.
The EUR4,000 (US$4,505) fellowship covers a large portion of travel costs, board and lodging. A good knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of German is helpful but not essential.
The application deadline is June 16.

Environmental journalism competition seeks entries [Asia]

The Singapore Environment Council’s Asian Environmental Journalism Awards (AEJA) aim to recognize the best coverage of environmental journalism in Asia.
Categories include journalist of the year, young journalist, story of the year, media organization and photograph of the year.
Works must have been published or broadcast between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017. Articles in any language will be accepted, but an English translation must be submitted.
Winners will receive a trip to the award ceremony and journalism conference in Singapore.
The deadline is July 17.

Poynter Institute relaunches fellowship for young journalists [US]

The Poynter Institute's Naughton Fellowship will allow a young journalist to work at Poynter for one year. The fellowship has been retooled to focus on visual journalism.
The fellow will work to figure out how Poynter journalism should look on Poynter.org and off-platform channels like YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter. Other responsibilities include helping with reporting and writing from time to time.
The position pays US$15 to US$17 per hour. 
The deadline is May 31.
