The Investigative Journalism Foundation is accepting entries for the Ulanbek Egizbaev Prize for the best journalistic investigation. The contest is named in memory of the investigative journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who died in 2018.

Submissions can be in Kyrgyz or Russian and must have been published or broadcast in 2020.

Winners will receive cash prize of KGS100,000, trophies and diplomas.

The deadline is Jan. 15, 2021.

Philippe Chaffanjon Prize accepting submissions [France, Haiti]

Journalists whose work was published on a French or Haitian news site can compete for this prize.

The Philippe Chaffanjon Prize recognizes two field reports, one published on a French news site, and another on a Haitian news site.

Multimedia reports, podcasts, investigative videos or any other innovative formats about any topic are eligible, as long as they have been published in 2020 on a news site in France or Haiti.

Candidates must be over 18 but having a press card is not mandatory. 

Each winner will receive EUR2,500 (US$2,907).

The deadline is Dec. 31.

ACME offers training on investigative journalism [Uganda]

Journalists who have at least two years of experience can apply for this program.

The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) organizes a fellowship program on investigative journalism for Ugandan journalists.

The program features a five-day training workshop and networking meetings with media owners and managers. 

The next training will be in Fort Portal Nov. 23 to 27, followed by Jinja on Dec.7 to 11 and Gulu Dec. 14 to 18.  

Participants will learn how to use investigative tools to uncover information, how to ask meaningful questions and how to source material, the most effective way to structure and present their stories and more.

The deadline for the next training is Nov. 14.

WSCIJ seeks Investigative journalism stories [Nigeria]

Professional and freelance journalists or teams of journalists are eligible to apply.

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) is accepting entries for its competition. The 2020 award will highlight stories that explore the intersection between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and COVID-19.

Categories include print, radio, television, photography, editorial cartoon and online. Winners typically receive plaques.

Stories should have been first published or broadcast in Nigerian media between Oct. 4, 2019 and Oct. 3, 2020.

The deadline is Oct. 24.

IJ4EU offers Investigation Support Scheme [Europe]

Teams of journalists based in at least two EU member states or at least one EU member state and one official candidate country can apply.

Investigative Journalism for Europe (IJ4EU), managed by a consortium led by the International Press Institute (IPI), has launched a new call for its Investigation Support Scheme.

The program aims to assist cross-border journalistic projects in the European Union and EU candidate countries. Grants range from EUR5,000 to EUR50,000.

The resulting stories must be published by media outlets in at least two different countries.

Workshops on media ethics, investigative journalism available [Sub-Saharan Africa]

Nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and institutions with experience in Sub-Saharan Africa can apply for this program.

The Africa Regional Services in the Bureau of African Affairs of the U.S. Department of State will sponsor an organization that will provide digital education to African journalists.

The program seeks to promote improved knowledge of newsgathering strategies, media ethics, journalist safety, investigative reporting, and the business of journalism. 

The award recipient must organize three conferences in French, Portuguese and English and engage at least two different American journalists as presenters .

Awards may range from US$200,000 to US$400,000 for a period of 12 to 18 months.

The deadline is Aug. 25.

Gabo Foundation offers funds for investigative reports on drugs [Latin America]

Journalists working or collaborating with the media in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Mexico can apply for this call.

The Gabo Foundation, with support from the Open Society Foundations, is organizing the second edition of the Fund for Investigative Journalism and New Narratives on Drugs.

The initiative will provide US$2,000 to US$6,000 to reporting projects that broaden the perspectives with which drugs are addressed in the region, and that enhances stories on public health, human rights, youth and women, the environment, and the rural context of illegal substances.

Applicants can enter in four categories: investigative journalism, local journalism, innovative journalism and collaborative journalism.

Up to 22 scholarships will be awarded. Each journalist or team will have a maximum of five months to research and produce the final version of their work. 

The deadline is Sept. 14.

Abraji seeks term papers for investigative journalism conference [Brazil]

Recent graduates in journalism can participate in this event.

The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) invites students to present their final term papers at the 15th Abraji Conference, which will take place online Sept. 11 and 12.

The term papers or undergraduate thesis must have been approved by a college committee between March 2019 and May 2020. Dissertations and reporting books must have at least 50 pages; radio and video programs, a minimum of 15 minutes; photo work, at least 30 images; and computer-assisted reporting, at least seven pages.

The selected authors will receive free registration for the conference and Abraji membership for a year.

The deadline is July 10.
