RJI offers Journalism fellowship [Worldwide]

Media professionals worldwide can apply for a fellowship in Columbia, Missouri.

The fellowship program, sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), invites proposals from individuals and organizations who wish to work on innovative projects that strengthen journalism's future.

The institute offers residential, nonresidential and institutional fellowships. Residential fellows spend eight months on the Missouri campus, taking advantage of the intellectual and technological resources of RJI and the university while interacting with Missouri faculty and students. These fellows receive a US$10,000 monthly stipend, plus a one-time US$10,000 housing allowance.

Nonresidential fellowships are designed for employees of a news, technology or related company who have ideas they can develop while continuing in their jobs. These fellows receive a US$20,000 stipend for the eight-month program.

The US$20,000 institutional fellowship stipend is paid to the company or institution and can be used to hire a freelancer or temporary contractor to fill in for an employee as needed or for other project needs.

The deadline is Dec. 18.

Goethe-Institut seeks entries for memory project [Africa]

Anyone can participate in this project on the materiality of movement in Africa during the pandemic.

The Goethe-Institut in South Africa is inviting contributions to its Archive of Forgetfulness.

Works should focus on things that enable people to move – literally or figuratively – to question what it means to imagine living across borders. 

Possible formats include short texts, films, photographic essays, sound pieces, video performances or multimedia.

Selected projects will be exhibited online and receive ZAR5,000 (US$302).


The deadline is Jan. 15, 2021.

The Mesa Refuge, located in Point Reyes Station, California, provides time, space and solitude for writers to delve into their work. Topics related to nature, the human economy and social equity receive priority.

Room and most dinners are provided at no cost, but participants must pay for their own travel.

The Energy and Resources Institute offers fellowship on climate change reporting [India, Nepal, Bhutan]

Print and radio journalists, voice artists, documentarians, video bloggers, graphic artists and other communicators can apply for a media fellowship.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the Earth Journalism Network are accepting candidates for the Media Fellowship for Climate Change Reporting in the Himalayan Region.

The fellowship is a fully online program running January to June 2021. The fellows will interact with climate science, policy and communication experts and be mentored by senior journalists. The goal is to to create a Himalayan collective of climate change communicators.

Applicants must have at least three years of experience, working with a regional or national media organization or independently, preferably in the Himalayan region.

The SKeyes Center offers Online safety training [MENA]


Journalists based in the MENA region can enroll in this online course.

The SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom, ACOS Alliance, Frontline Freelance Register (FFR), Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR) and Marie Colvin Journalists' Network (MCJN) are offering 50 journalists free access to a safety training course provided online by media safety trainers at Silk Road Training.

Selected participants will be able to access Silk Road’s platform over a period of 30 days, starting on Nov. 16.

The course includes a series of five live webinars that will include interactive scenarios covering life saving first aid, civil unrest, frontline conflict safety and digital security. On completion, each participant will receive a certificate.

The course is available in English and Arabic.

Grist offers reporting Fellowship [US]



Budding journalists interested in environmental issues can apply for a fellowship.

Grist, a nonprofit environmental media organization, offers a news and politics fellowship and environmental justice fellowship starting in January 2021.

Fellows work full time, writing stories on their respective areas. They can work remotely during the pandemic and choose Seattle, New York or remotely later.

The fellowship pays US$3,334 per month. Fellows must make a six-month commitment.

International reporting scholarships available [Worldwide]

Journalists from developing countries and the German state of North-Rhine-Westphalia can apply for an exchange program.

The Heinz-Kühn-Foundation awards scholarships to young journalists for six-week or three-month reporting trips. The program enables participants to gain first-hand and in-depth knowledge of the customs, opinions and way of life in other countries.

Candidates must be 35 years old and younger and have a good command of the official language of their host country. Applicants from Africa, Asia and Latin America must have a basic knowledge of the German language.

The scholarship includes travel, living expenses and a German language course of up to four months if necessary.

The deadline is Nov. 30.

African Women in Media Award seeks entries on entrepreneurship [Africa]


Women journalists and bloggers working in Africa for media whose primary audience is based in Africa can apply.

The APO Group, a pan-African communications and business consultancy, presents the second annual APO Group African Women in Media Award, which aims to recognize, celebrate and empower African women journalists who support women's entrepreneurship in Africa.

works must have broadcast or published in English, French, Portuguese or Arabic between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31, 2020. Entries must offer valuable insights into African female entrepreneurs while appealing to a global audience. 

The winner will receive a US$2,500 and online courses from a respected international university. The finalists will be announced on Nov. 20. The winner will receive the award at the Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum’s Virtual Conference and Awards on Dec. 2 to 3.

Documentary film festival focuses on ethnic minorities [Russia]

Russian filmmakers can submit their works to compete in this film festival.

The Show RUS! film festival, organized by the CoolConnections Art Association and the Moscow Film School with the support of the US Embassy in Moscow, will take place in the spring of 2021.

Topics include but are not limited to stories about people from different generations, professions, ethnic groups (including ethnic minorities) and subcultures, as well as stories with local color.

The running time is up to 45 minutes for short documentaries and more than 45 minutes for full-length films. Films must have been produced in 2017 to 2020 in the Russian Federation in Russian or other languages of Russia ― in this case, they should include Russian subtitles.

The deadline is Dec. 1.

Reporters Without Borders (RWB) Spain organizes the Temporary Retreat Program, which offers Latin American media professionals a three-month stay in Madrid with accommodation and living expenses included.

The program aims to offer journalists living under tense professional circumstances a period of rest, as well as the opportunity to attend training courses in Spain.

Selected candidates will travel to Spain on Dec. 1 and return to their countries of origin on Feb.  25, 2021.

Philip Meyer Journalism Award focuses on using social science tools [Worldwide]

Journalists incorporating social research methods in their reporting are invited to apply for an award. 

The Philip Meyer Journalism Award honors stories that utilize a wide variety of research tools, from probabilities to survey research. The contest is presented by the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, the Knight Chair at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and  Investigative Reporters and Editors. 

Works must have been published or broadcast between Oct. 1, 2019, and Sept 30, 2020. Entries submitted in other languages must be accompanied by English translations. One person on the story's team must be a current IRE member. There is a US$75 fee per entry for professional members.

The first, second and third places will receive US$500, US$300 and US$200 respectively. 

The deadline is Nov. 15.

The Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) is accepting candidates for the CABJ Media Startup Bootcamp, a program that helps Black media entrepreneurs and content creators.

The program offers resources to bolster or start up participants' own digital media publications. The courses will be available Nov. 1 to 20.

Program graduates will have the opportunity to apply for the CABJ Startup Grant. Five grantees will receive CAD5,000 each.

The program is free for CABJ members based in Canada. For Black journalists outside of Canada, each course costs CAD55.

Film Festival accepting entries [MENA]

Documentarians from the Arab world can submit their films to this event in San Diego.

The San Diego Arab Film Festival (San Diego AFF), a project of nonprofit KARAMA, will take place June 18 to 20 and 25 to 26, 2021. 

The festival strives to present top-quality films that offer honest and realistic portrayals of the peoples of the Arab world, their culture, history and politics.

Applicants can submit narrative, documentary, experimental and animated films, both features and shorts, produced between Jan. 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2020. 

Films must have English subtitles unless there is little or no dialogue. 

Selected films will be entered into a competition for audience awards for best feature film and best short film.

The deadline is Jan. 15, 2021.

The Cell Norbert Zongo for Investigative Journalism in West Africa (CENOZO) is looking for participants for a new training program on data journalism and data analysis that aims to facilitate the inclusion of women in investigative journalism in the region.

Free Press Unlimited supports crowdfunded journalism [Eastern Europe]

Teams of journalists from eight countries can apply for this cross-border, collaborative program.

Press Start, Free Press Unlimited, Free Press for Eastern Europe (FPEE), and the Prague Media School have launched the project “Enhancing audience-supported collaborations for empowered media and societies,” co-funded by the European Commission.

The program will facilitate collaboration between journalists from Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic and Greece. 

Selected teams will develop their collaborative journalism skills, network with journalists and get their project financed through crowdfunding on the Press Start crowdfunding platform.

Yale University’s Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program brings innovative, multidisciplinary thinkers and doers from around the world to Yale for four months, from mid-August to mid-December 2021.

The fellowship provides a chance for professionals to step back from the intensity of their work to reflect, learn and be challenged both academically and personally.

Stanford offers fellowship for democracy, development [Worldwide]

Journalists involved in their country's economic and political development can apply for a summer fellowship at Stanford University.

The Draper Hills Summer Fellowship on Democracy and Development is a three-week program that brings together 25 to 30 midcareer professionals in the field of democracy, development and the rule of law, especially those from developing countries.

The 2021 program is scheduled for July 18 to Aug. 6 in Stanford, California. The fellowship provides a forum for emerging leaders to connect, exchange experiences and receive academic training through seminars, academic readings and classroom-based curriculum.

The university covers travel, accommodation, living expenses and visa costs.

European Press Prize focuses on investigative reporting [Europe]

Journalists from the 47 countries in the Council of Europe can submit their work to this contest.

The European Press Prize is an initiative of several European organizations that aim to encourage journalism of the highest quality in the continent.

The contest will award one applicant in four categories with EUR10,000 each for work that has made a significant impact. Categories are investigative reporting, distinguished reporting, opinion and innovation. There is also the judges’ special award.

Entries must have been published online or in print in any language but include a synopsis in English. Submitted work must include a synopsis (250 words maximum) describing the theme, impact and public reception of the article(s). 

Works must have been published by a European publication between Dec. 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2020.

Auschwitz offers fellowship on ethical leadership [Worldwide]

Graduate journalism students and recent graduates can apply for a two-week summer fellowship in Germany and Poland.

The Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) will choose 14 to 16 individuals to examine the role journalists played in Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and current issues that raise ethical concerns today.

The next journalism program will take place May 21 to June 4, 2021.

The program will address the complicity of German and foreign journalists in Nazi policies; the impact of technology on journalism; the role of journalists in electoral politics and in holding power accountable; advocacy journalism; normalizing aberrant behavior; the challenge of reporting in an era of “fake news;" and more.

Deadline approaching for submission of proposals on global health [US]


Newsrooms interested in solutions journalism can apply for this grant program.

The Solutions Journalism Network, is accepting applications for solutions-focused reporting.

The grants will support global health and COVID-19; education and COVID-19; COVID-19 in general (rolling deadline); and business and sustainability.

News organizations must have completed an SJN training, worked with SJN before or commit to participating in a solutions journalism training before starting their projects.

Film festival seeks submissions on the Arctic [Worldwide]

Filmmakers can submit their films to this festival.

The Arctic International Film Festival "Golden Raven," organized by the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, will take place March 19 to 29, 2021 in Anadyr, Russia.

The international competition is open to feature-length and short films (both fiction and nonfiction) on topics related to the Arctic and reflecting various aspects of life in this region, including the life of Indigenous peoples.

Feature-length films must have been produced in 2019 and 2020; short films must have been produced in 2020.

The winners will receive prizes including two cash awards of RUB100,000 (US$1,327).

The deadline is Nov. 10.

TPOTY competition accepting travel photography entries [Worldwide]

Professional and amateur photographers can compete for the Travel Photography of the Year (TPOTY) Awards.

The TPOTY competition was founded by professional photographers Chris and Karen Coe. Sponsors include Fujifilm, Genesis Imaging, Páramo, Photo Iconic, Plastic Sandwich and Royal Photographic Society and others.

The contest features three portfolio categories, three "One Shot" single image categories, a "Smart Shot" category for images taken on a mobile phone or tablet, a special award for travel documentaries, Young TPOTY, a video category and more.

The winners will receive cash prizes and sponsors' gifts.

Entry fees vary from GBP8 (US$10) to GBP30 (US$40). The entry for Young TPOTY is free. Enter in September to receive a 10% discount.

The Culture Resource is accepting applications for its production awards. The program offers grants for authors to produce their first creative projects.

Grants of up to US$10,000 are available for projects in literature, music, performing arts and visual arts and up to US$15,000 for projects in cinema and video.

The film section covers the production of short, medium-length and feature-length fictional, documentary, animated and experimental films.

Innovation Competition open for journalists [US]

U.S. college students are invited to enter this competition.

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism is accepting applications to the RJI Student Innovation Competition challenge.

Contestants must submit an idea to help newsrooms reconnect with audiences during a season of isolation. 

Finalists will have three months to polish their idea based on the RJI feedback before presenting virtually on Feb. 26, 2021. 

The first, second and third place winners will receive US$10,000, US$2,500 and US$1,000.

Media development agency seeks consultant [Africa]

Journalists with experience in open data training can apply for this program in Ivory Coast, Niger, Cameroon and Madagascar.

The CFI, the French agency for media development, seeks a trainer for MédiaLab pour Elles, a project that aims to develop content about gender in Sub-Saharan Africa based on open data. This research will help consolidate a new network of trainers and women experts in open data collection and analysis.

The program will run November 2020 to January 2022. The consultant will be in charge of identifying the eight trainers in each country, developing a training and action protocol in open data analysis  and survey preparation. Following the training sessions, the consultant will help monitor the surveys launched by the trainees over the course of six months.

Candidates must have professional media and open data analysis experience. They must also have robust skills running training programs. Knowledge of the challenges facing media and civil society in Sub-Saharan Africa as well as knowledge of gender issues at stake in French-speaking Africa are key.

The deadline is Oct. 15.

EJN offers grants for reporting illegal wildlife trade [East Africa]

Journalists and media organizations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda can apply for this grant.

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering grants for investigative reporting on environmental crime in East Africa, as part of its East Africa Wildlife Journalism project. 

Projects should focus on illegal wildlife trafficking and other investigative pieces on environmental crime. These includes, but are not limited to, stories on illegal logging, mining or sand harvesting, the trade in timber, such as sandalwood, dumping of hazardous waste and overfishing.

Grantees will receive up to US$2,000 to produce their investigative stories.

The deadline is Oct. 19.

OBORÉ offers course on armed conflicts reporting [Brazil]

College students can participate in this online program.

The 19th Reporting Course on War and Armed Violence Journalism will take place Saturdays Nov. 7 to Dec. 12. The organizers are the International Committee of the Red Cross and OBORÉ, with support from Abraji.

The course will bring together legal experts, military officials, police representatives and journalists who will speak about the international standards in situations of armed conflict and violence for journalists.

A total of 50 communication students will be selected to participate in the course. The cost is BRL300.
