Diversity fellowships available [US]

Journalists of color committed to investigative work are invited to apply for this program.

The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), in partnership with the National Association for Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and the Miami Herald Media Company, organizes a three-month diversity fellowship.

The program aims to expand opportunities for diverse journalists in watchdog reporting, with an emphasis on journalists of color.

Projects should dig into issues of consequence and of interest to readers of the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald.

The fellowship provides US$30,000 that can be used for reporting costs, such as travel, document fees, transcriptions and equipment rentals.The Miami Herald Media Company will provide the fellow with workspace and other editorial support.

Wilson Center's offers fellowship on environmental challenges [Latin America]

Journalists, academics, activists and other professionals residing in Latin America can apply for this fellowship.

The Wilson Center's Latin American Program and Vidanta Foundation organize a residential fellowship for those interested in researching concrete solutions to the range of environmental threats faced by countries of the region.

Fellows will spend four to six months at the Wilson Center in Washington, starting Jan. 1, 2020.

The goal of the fellowship is to explore and highlight evidence-based initiatives that have shown promising results and have the potential to be adopted on a wider scale in the region.

Candidates are encouraged to focus their applications on innovative projects and public policies that will address one or more of Latin America's urgent environmental challenges.

Each fellow is assigned round-trip airfare in economy class, a stipend and a furnished office,

Video contest highlights social issues [Worldwide]

Filmmakers and activists can submit videos that inspire activism, compassion and social transformation.

The Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) is accepting entries for its international documentary and educational media competition and showcase, funded by documentary companies and human rights organizations.

The categories are feature, short, virtual reality (VR) and impact video. Feature documentaries must be a minimum of 40 minutes, shorts a maximum of 39 minutes, VR less than 20 minutes in length and impact videos 2 to 20 minutes long.

Films must have been completed between October 2018 and September 2019. All (non-English language) documentaries and educational impact videos must be subtitled in English.

Winners in each category will receive cash prizes, media features and distribution opportunities.

The early deadline is Sept. 26. The late deadline is Oct. 25. The entry fee starts at US$20.

Basra film festival seeks entries [MENA]

Arab filmmakers can submit their works to compete in this film festival in Basra, Iraq.

The Basra International Film Festival is accepting animation films, documentaries, short films, and experimental films.

Short films must be produced after Jan. 1, 2018. The festival requires English subtitles for Arabic-language films or other languages.

Winners will receive the palm gold, silver and bronze prizes.

Online course covers media, minorities, migration [Europe]

Journalists, students and NGO media officers in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia are invited to attend this free course.

Minority Rights Group Europe, in cooperation with Cracow Economic University in Poland, the Human Rights League in Slovakia and the Gender Project for Bulgaria, offers the online course "Media, minorities and migration."

The course will start Oct. 7 and last about eight weeks, requiring a commitment of about five hours per week.

The program aims to help journalists report sensitively on migration issues. Participants will gain a better understanding of international development, issues affecting minorities, indigenous peoples and immigrants, and minority-sensitive development journalism in practice.

There will also be opportunities to report on international development and foreign affairs stories on the ground for students who complete the course.

Education journalism contest seeks entries [Brazil]

Journalists and students can compete for reporting grants and cash prizes.

Brazil's Association of Education Journalists (JEDUCA, in Portuguese) and Fundação Itaú Social organize an education journalism competition.

The contest has two categories: professional journalist and student. The journalist category will offer four reporting grants worth BRL8,000 each. The student category will award three term papers with up to BRL3,000.

Professional journalists must have at least two years of experience. Students must be expected to graduate in 2019 or have completed their papers in 2017 or 2018.

The deadline is Sept. 25.

Fellowships for International Science Reporters available [Worldwide]

Early-career science, technology and health journalists can apply for this program.

The EurekAlert! Fellowships for International Science Reporters enable journalists to cover the latest research and network with peers from around the world at the AAAS Annual Meeting Feb. 13 to 16, 2020 in Seattle, Washington.

Candidates must have five years or less of experience as a professional science reporter or freelancer
based in China, India, the Balkan region, Central and South America or Arab-majority states in the Middle East. They must also meet EurekAlert!'s reporter and freelancer eligibility criteria.

Fellows receive travel and accommodations to attend the conference.

Journalism Fellowship available [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists can apply for a fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship, sponsored by the University of Michigan, brings exceptional journalists from the United States and abroad together for a year of academic study. Fellows devise a personalized plan of study with access to the courses and resources at the university.

Typically, 12 Americans are joined by six to eight international colleagues. Applicants must be granted a leave of absence for the academic year from their employers.

Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Print, broadcast and online journalists are eligible to apply. U.S. fellows receive US$75,000 and have their tuition and travel costs covered by the program. The stipend for international fellows varies.

The deadline for international applicants is Dec. 1. U.S. applicants have until Feb. 1, 2020 to apply.

Vacancy: Climate Tracker seeks photographer [Africa, Asia Pacific, Caribbean]

Photographers with experience covering environmental issues can apply for this assignment.

Climate Tracker is looking for photographers to document environmental projects for one to two weeks between October 2019 and April 2020.

The call is open to photographers in Ghana, Togo, Djibouti, Chad, Mozambique, Sudan, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The selected applicants will receive a stipend of EUR350 (US$386), local travel costs and guidance.
