Journalism Contest on sustainable development ongoing [Worldwide]

Journalists and others from UN member states can compete for an award.
The King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Youth Empowerment Award is accepting applications from journalists covering sustainable development.
The youth enabler category is open to the media and other institutions. Works must highlight an initiative enabling genuine youth engagement and action for sustainable development. Three winners will receive US$25,000 each.
There is also the youth action category, which will recognize a unique and successful development initiative by youth, granting five awards of US$20,000 each.
The deadline is Oct. 30.

NCTJ hosts contest for student journalists [UK]

Young student journalists and trainees from the United Kingdom can enter a competition.
The NCTJ Awards for Excellence, sponsored by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), honor the best journalism students and journalism trainees. Journalists and photographers with under two years of experience are eligible.
There are several categories available: equality, diversity and inclusion; innovation of the year; news; sports; top scoop; features; multimedia/campaign of the year; student project; student of the year; trainee of the year; apprentice of the year; and chairman's award.
Work must have been produced between Sept. 1, 2017 and Aug. 31, 2018. Awards will be presented at a ceremony in November.

TIB seeks video producer [Brazil]

The Intercept Brasil (TIB) is hiring a video producer/editor.
Responsibilities include producing four to five videos weekly; pitching original videos and ideas for videos that complement news stories; writing scripts that synthesize complex concepts; proposing and developing new audiovisual formats; and more.
Candidates must have advanced knowledge of Adobe Premiere and be skilled in After Effects. Basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Lightroom is a plus.

RFA seeks host newsrooms [US]

News organizations can apply to participate in a program that seeks to strengthen local media.
Report For America (RFA), a project funded by journalists Charles Sennott and Steven Waldman with support from The GroundTruth Project, Google News Lab and others, places journalists in local newsrooms in under-covered corners of America.
RFA is looking for news organizations interested in hosting the next class of RFA corps members in 2019.
Selected reporters will work for one to two years at host newsrooms, starting June 2019. Half of a entry level salary is paid by RFA, and the rest is split between the news organizations and local donors.

Journalism School offers training on children, Syrian refugee crisis [Worldwide]

Journalists with at least three years of experience who covered issues connected to refugees from the Syrian crisis can apply for this training.
The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia Journalism School, will host the workshop "Covering children and the Syrian refugee crisis" Jan. 20 to 23, 2019 in Amman, Jordan.
The workshop will bring journalists together with policy experts, scientists and practitioners working on early childhood development in a refugee context, to discuss the effects of trauma and effective interventions designed to mitigate harmful effects. The program will also include journalist-to-journalist discussions of craft, ethics, source development and networking among journalists and experts.
Ten journalists from Jordan and neighboring countries as well as 10 journalists from other parts of the world will be selected to participate. English or Arabic fluency is required.
Participants will receive roundtrip travel, hotel lodging, ground transportation and most meals.

Journalism fellowships open [Africa}

Journalism students and community journalists can apply can apply for a fellowship to attend this conference.
The African Investigative Journalism Conference, organized by the Journalism Program of Wits University, will take place Oct. 29 to 31 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The event will feature 50 panels, training sessions, keynotes and workshops with investigative reporters, editors and producers from the African continent and the United States.
There are 20 student fellowships available for students from South African universities and 10 fellowships for community newspaper journalists who are members of the Association of Independent Publishers.
The fellowships will cover travel, accommodations, local transportation, meals and conference fees. 
The fellowship deadline is Aug. 31.

Photography, Social Justice Fellowship available [Worldwide]

Early-career photojournalists and documentarians can apply for this program in New York.
The Magnum Foundation, in partnership with CUNY’s Graduate School of Journalism, organizes the Photography and Social Justice Fellowship.
The program builds capacity and community among a diverse, international network of fellows who have not had access to mentorship or training in photography but can demonstrate a commitment to activism and social justice. 
Fellows will attend weekly online meetings in April and May, followed by two workshops in New York - one in the summer and one the following winter - at CUNY’s Graduate School of Journalism. 
Over the course of six months, fellows will also produce a body of work that aims to advance social justice in their communities under the mentorship from Magnum Foundation’s network.

Funds available for investigate journalism projects [US]

Local newsrooms can apply for this program.
ProPublica is expanding its Local Reporting Network to investigate state government and politics.
The organization will pay the salary, plus an allowance for benefits, for full-time reporters at seven partner news organizations. Selected reporters will work on their projects throughout 2019.
The reporters will report to their home newsroom, with the guidance and support from ProPublica. Their work will be published or broadcast by their home newsroom and by ProPublica as well.
Applicants must send a proposal describing an investigative project they want to pursue, the reporter who would be chosen to spearhead the work, and the suggested market salary for him or her.

IPC accepting applications for conflict sensitive reporting workshop ( Nigeria)

The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria invites online journalists/bloggers who are engaged or interested in reporting governance and electoral issues ahead the 2019 elections to apply to attend a two-day workshop for online journalists/bloggers on conflict
sensitive reporting.

The workshop, supported by the EU under Component 4b: Support to the media of the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) project, seeks to build a professional media as catalysts of democratic accountability, credible elections and good governance.

The first phase of the workshop which is schedule for Thursday August 30 and Friday August 31, 2018 in Ibadan, shall have about 30 online journalists/bloggers drawn from Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ogun and environs.

The thrust of the workshop is to build the capacity of online journalists/bloggers in using online media for fair, balanced,language sensitive and conflict sensitive reporting of the elections.
Overall, the workshop shall focus on building the capacity of participants on professional and conflict sensitive reporting of the electoral processes. The workshop shall also focus on ways to mitigate hate speech.

Transport token, per diem and accommodation shall be provided for selected participants from outside Ibadan, while participants from Ibadan shall be entitled to token transport at the approved rates.
