Grants for journalism training available [UK]

British journalists from socially or ethnically diverse backgrounds can apply for a training grant.

The Journalism Diversity Fund offers grants to journalists attending courses with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).

Candidates must provide proof of application or have secured a place in an NCTJ accredited courseduring the 2017-18 academic year.

Applicants must reside in the United Kingdom and have a genuine commitment to journalism.

The deadline to apply for the fourth group of bursaries is Nov. 15.

Young peace builder program open [MENA]

Journalists ages 18 to 25 with the potential to shape opinion and engage their communities can apply for this program.

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) is seeking applications for its Young Peacebuilders in Middle East and North Africa program.

The program aims to support the growth of networks of young peacebuilders who are equipped with the tools to address stereotypes, prejudice and polarization in order to build more inclusive and peaceful societies in their communities and globally.

Participants will learn about other cultures, faiths and worldviews within and beyond the group to foster intercultural cohesion and collaboration, and develop competencies to use different forms of media or expressive arts as a way to create alternative narratives, reduce polarization and promote social inclusion.

The program consists of four parts: online phase for two months; face-to-face workshop in Amman, Jordan (one week); online follow-up phase (three to four months); and results sharing symposium (one day) in a location to be determined.

The organizer provides accommodations and travel expenses.

The deadline is Aug. 31.

Mongabay Reporting Network seeks story proposals [Asia]

Journalists can apply for a paid reporting initiative.

The Mongabay Reporting Network is commissioning stories on Asia's oceans.

The initiative seeks to investigate lesser-known issues facing the eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans, focusing on Asian ecosystems and organisms that tend to be overlooked.

Pitches must be in English and 500 words in length.

Mongabay will negotiate all fees and contracts on a per-story basis.

NewsU at Poynter hosts free webinar on data journalism tool [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in data journalism can register for this online course.

News University, the Poynter Institute e-learning project, is offering the course "Find stories in data faster and collaborate better with data.world: a digital tools tutorial" at 2 p.m. EDT Aug. 31.

Participants will learn how they can use data.world to discover data relevant to their beat with structured search, tags and alerts; how to slice data by copying and tweaking common SQL queries; tips for uploading and documenting data; data collaboration basics; and how to publish data and analysis for maximum impact.

The instructor is Ian Greenleigh, director of marketing at data.world and author of "The Social Media Side Door." 

This course is part of a series on digital tools, supported by Google News Lab and in partnership with the American Press Institute and The Poynter Institute.

Southern Environmental Law Center organizes journalism contest [US]

Journalists who focused on environmental issues in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia can compete for an award.

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) hosts the annual Phil Reed Environmental Writing Award in two categories: book, for nonfiction books (not self-published), and journalism, for newspaper, magazine and online articles.

The award seeks to enhance public awareness of the value and vulnerability of the South's natural heritage by giving special recognition to writers who most effectively tell the stories about the region's environment.

Entries must have been published in the year ending Oct. 1, 2017 and have at least 3,000 words.

The winner in each category will receive US$1,000.

Abraji offers online course in data journalism [Brazil]

Journalists interested in data journalism can enroll in this four-week course.

The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) will host a data journalism course starting Sept. 11. The online training will cover how to obtain relevant information from large public databases.

Participants will learn how to analyze databases published in full by Brazilian government agencies and publish stories based on this information.

Registration is open, but spots are limited. The cost is BRL120 for Abraji members and BRL150 for non-members.

BBC seeks field producer [Kenya]

Experienced journalists fluent in English can apply for this position.

The BBC is hiring a field editor to join its Africa service in Nairobi.

Responsibilities include suggesting and researching stories; finding contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of materials; reporting from the field as needed; and more.

Candidates must have basic skills of shooting photo and video, knowledge of issues relating to the region and developments in digital storytelling.

The deadline is Aug. 27.
