Journalists who are fluent in English and interested in developing data reporting skills in service of public health journalism can apply for this fellowship.The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), is accepting applications for the Drowning Prevention 2019 Reporting Fellowship.
The program will select 10 journalists from around the world to attend the 2019 World Conference on Drowning Prevention Oct. 8 to 10 in Durban, South Africa, as well as a pre-conference workshop Oct. 6 to 7.
The conference will bring together experts and research on drowning prevention, rescue, lifesaving and water safety. Fellows will have the opportunity to meet and interview leading experts on drowning prevention to help inform their reporting.
Fellows will deepen their understanding of drowning prevention and sharpen the skills needed to cover this topic. The selected journalists are expected to produce at least three safety stories during and after the conference.
Priority will be given to journalists from low- or middle-income countries.
The fellowship covers travel, accommodations, meals, emergency insurance and conference registration.
The deadline is Aug. 19.
