Journalists and others can participate in this four-week course in Portuguese.
The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, in partnership with Brazil's National Association of Newspapers and with the support of Google News Initiative, is offering the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on "How to debunk ‘fake news’ - and never call it by that name again."
The course will be held Aug. 5 to Sept. 2. The instructors are coorse coordinator Ângela Pimenta, president of the Institute for the Development of Journalism (Projor, in Portuguese) and coordinator of the Trust Project; Pedro Burgos, founder of the project Impacto.Jor and ICFJ Knight fellow; Barbara Libório, journalist at Aos Fatos and Canal Meio; and Fábio Gusmão, online editor of Extra newspaper.
Participants will learn the steps for checking and verification to unmask fabricated news, deceptive memes and manipulated videos that pop up on social networks. The four modules will focus on debunking rumors; source checking; digital footprints and time recording; and geolocation.
The course is free and accessible to anyone from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Those interested in receiving a certificate must pay a US$30 administrative fee.
