Journalism fund supports reports of corruption in water sector [Worldwide]

Investigative and data journalists, especially those reporting in developing countries, can apply for funding.

The Water Integrity Network has launched the WIN Journalism Fund to support in-depth journalistic research on the impacts of corruption in the water sector and its subsectors.

Funding will range from EUR2,000 (US$2,306) to EUR12,000 (US$13,838) and can be used to cover travel and technical expenses, but may not be used for the purchase of any equipment

Applicants must be accredited journalists with at least five years of experience and a track record of prior publications.

Queries must be submitted before Oct. 23.

The deadline to submit a full proposal is Nov. 20.

Kiplinger Program offers fellowship on digital tools [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in digital media can apply for a fellowship.

The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio State University offers short-term fellowships to help make better use of new online tools and channels. The 2019 fellowship will take place April 7 to 12 in Columbus, Ohio.

Fellows receive a full week of immersive training on digital tools and tactics from leading industry experts. Topics include cybersecurity for journalists, mobile videography, data journalism and media ethics.

Print, broadcast and online journalists with at least five years experience are eligible to apply, including freelancers.

The fellowship covers accommodations, hotel and most meals. Limited scholarships are available to reduce travel costs for fellows selected from outside the United States.

Rory Peck Trust hosts training on Freelance Safety Surgeries [MENA]

The Rory Peck Trust and Frontline Freelance Register will host the training "
Freelance Safety Surgeries" at the 2018 ARIJ Forum for Investigative Journalism Dec. 1 and 2 in Sweimeh, Jordan.

The tailored private consultations will focus on physical safety issues, including risk assessment and assignment planning.

Two Arabic-speaking safety experts will deliver the sessions, which are free of charge.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is hosting the workshop "
Exploring corporate impact - Brazil" Nov. 24 to 26 in São Paulo, as part of the Exploring Corporate Impact program.

The workshop will cover reporting, investigative and analytical skills around sustainability in a corporate context. Participants will learn information, tools and tactics to better report through the lens of sustainability.

Participating journalists must be fluent in English.

Media startups based in Europe and Israel can apply for this program in Hamburg, Germany.

Next media accelerator (NMA) is selecting its eighth batch of startups beginning January 2019.

The six-month program offers a connection to key players in the industry; investment of up to EUR50,000; office space in Hamburg; mentorship; and more.

Early-stage media tech startups providing innovative solutions to disrupt the media are encouraged to apply.

Kate Webb Prize for Asian journalists seeks entries [Asia]

Journalists doing exceptional work in difficult or dangerous conditions can apply for this prize.

Agence France Presse (AFP) is inviting entries for the 2018 Kate Webb Prize for Asian journalists.

Photo, video and text published in 2018 are eligible. Entries must be in English or any Asian national language, as long as there is an English translation. Photo captions must be in English.

The winner will receive EUR3,000 euros (US$3,500) and a certificate.

Travel fellowships for journalists available [Worldwide]

Journalists and students can apply for a fellowship to attend this event.

The 2019 World Conference of Science Journalists will take place July 1 to 5, 2019 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The conference seeks to build global capacity for science communication and provide an opportunity for journalists to explore cutting-edge science as well as crucial issues at the interface of science and society.

There are general travel fellowships for those who otherwise could not attend the conference.

Fellowships will provide full or partial support to cover economy airfare, accommodation and ground transportation. Fellowship recipients will also receive complimentary meeting registration.

Public Journalism Club offers contest on human rights issues [Armenia]

Journalists and photographers can enter a contest focusing on the human rights situation in closed institutions, special schools and special care institutions as well as in the army of Armenia.

The Public Journalism Club (PJC), in partnership with Armenia's Investigative Reporters, is hosting the contest as part of the project "A public glimpse into a closed world: human rights situation in closed institutions in Armenia," financed by the European Union and co-funded by the Open Society Foundations.

Works can be in Armenian, Russian or English and must have been published or broadcast in print, podcast, radio, TV, online or multimedia formats from Nov. 1, 2017 to Nov. 15, 2018.

The categories include investigative reporting, feature story, photo story and more.

Winners will receive cash prizes ranging from AMD150,000 to AMD300,000.

IFFR seeks applicants for young film training project [Worldwide]

Journalists ages 30 and younger can apply for a training program in the Netherlands.

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) seeks applicants for its training program Jan. 23 to Feb. 3, 2019. The IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics offers motivated and talented journalists a chance to cover a major international film festival.

The program includes reporting on the festival, publishing a blog on IFFR's website, meeting with experienced film critics and reporting for participants' home media outlets.

The organizers will cover hotel accommodations and partial refunds of travel costs when participants are traveling from outside Europe.

Candidates must have fluent written and spoken English, and should not be established critics. They should be affiliated with a print or online media outlet to report on the festival. Typically up to four journalists from outside Netherlands are chosen to attend.

The application deadline is Nov. 15.

The Escuela de Periodismo UAM/El País is organizing a one-day workshop on Africa reporting Nov. 24 in Madrid.

The workshop will address some of the essential aspects when reporting on areas of conflict and humanitarian crises in Africa. The stereotyped image of the continent will also be discussed.

The instructor, freelance journalist José Naranjo, will give recommendations to report positively on African issues.
