EGU offers Journalism science fellowship [Worldwide]

Journalists interested in covering research in Earth, planetary or space sciences can apply for this fellowship. 

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is accepting applications for the seventh edition of its Science Journalism Fellowship competition.

The fellowship offers journalists the opportunity to follow geoscientists on location and to develop an in-depth understanding of their research questions, approaches, findings and motivation.

Proposals should focus on a topic in the geosciences (including planetary and space sciences) with potential broad public appeal, preferably feature leading Europe-based researchers, and outline an original, well-informed approach to the subject.

Fellows receive up to EUR5,000 (US$5,872) to cover expenses related to their projects.

Festival focuses on digital and innovative journalism [Brazil]

Journalists, media entrepreneurs and students can watch this event online.

The 3i Festival - Innovative, Inspiring and Independent Journalism will take place Nov. 11 and 12 in Rio de Janeiro. The festival is organized by Agência Lupa, Agência Pública, BRIO, JOTA, Nexo, Nova Escola, Ponte Jornalismo, Repórter Brasil and Google News Lab.

The program will cover topics such as independent financing and sustainability, business models, technology applied to journalism, polarization in social media and fact-checking, and more.

Special guests include The Intercept's Glenn Greenwald; Cross Check's Claire Wardle; Politifact's Angie Holan; Malo Pasos' José Luis Pardo; Nómada's Martin Pellece; and Chicas Poderoras' Mariana Santos. 

Participants will also present their journalism projects on the last day of the festival.

Journalism Award calls for submissions [MENA]

Arab journalists can enter this contest in Dubai.

The Arab Journalism Award is accepting submissions from journalists who have exhibited creativity, objectivity and the ability to reach a range of sectors in Arab society.

Entries can be made in the following categories: investigative reporting, digital journalism, sports journalism, business journalism, dialogue journalism, political journalism, cultural journalism, humanitarian journalism, Arabic youth journalism, best journalistic photo, caricatures in journalism and media personality of the year.

Each category winner will receive a cash prize.

The deadline to enter is Dec. 26.

The Economist accepting Applications for Foreign correspondent [China]

Journalists with a good knowledge of China and of standard Chinese can apply for this position.

The Economist is hiring a foreign correspondent to be based in Beijing or elsewhere outside the United Kingdom.

The selected journalist will help with the coverage of foreign affairs. 

Candidates must submit a test piece of no more than 600 words, two ideas for articles and a CV. 

The deadline is Oct. 31.

Smithsonian hosts photo contest [Worldwide]

The deadline is Nov. 30.

Professional and amateur photographers can enter this contest.

Smithsonian magazine is accepting submissions for its annual photo contest.

Contestants can submit up to 15 photos to each of the following categories: the natural world, travel, people, the American experience, altered images and mobile photos.

The grand prize consists of US$2,500. Each category winner, along with the readers' choice winner, will receive US$500. The best photo in any of the categories taken with a mobile device will receive US$500.

The deadline is Nov. 30.

The Seattle Times seeks interns [US]

College sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students can apply for the program.

The Seattle Times offers paid, 10-week internships for students pursuing careers in journalism.

Interns will work on digital and interactives, graphics, photojournalism, investigative reporting, copy editing and reporting. They will also attend weekly training sessions with staff in Seattle.

Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to print and online journalism. One previous internship at a daily news organization is preferred; multimedia experience is a plus.

The application deadline is Nov. 15.

Fact-checking and data journalism Online Course Available [Latin America]

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, with the support of Google News Lab, organizes an online training on fact-checking and data journalism Nov. 6 to Dec. 3.

Journalists and journalism students interested in the verification of public discourse and data journalism can register for this free course in Spanish.

Instructor Laura Zommer will teach participants fact-checking techniques and the origins and fundamentals of data journalism.

Students can complete the activities when it's most convenient for them; however, there are suggested deadlines for completing the four modules.
