Revista Late seeks stories on indigenous peoples, biodiversity [Latin America]

Journalists interested in biodiversity reporting can apply for this opportunity. 

Revista Late and Survival International invite reporters to submit their story proposals about the ways in which indigenous peoples protect biodiversity.

Selected journalists will participate in a training program organized by Survival International with journalist Yasnaya Elena Aguilar and researcher Fiore Longo. The training will go over the main conflicts that affect indigenous people in the world and especially in Latin America.

Submitted stories must be original and have already been reported. Those selected will be published in El Espectador and in an anthology book by Revista Late, which will pay US$100 for the story.

The World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest seeks entries [Worldwide]

Professional visual journalists can submit digital projects to a contest.

The World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest seeks entries that include professional photography in combination with, but not limited to, audio and visual elements like video, animation, graphics, illustrations, sound or text.

The photo contest has eight categories: general news, spot news, contemporary issues, environment, portraits, nature, sports and long-term projects. The digital storytelling contest has three categories: interactive, long form and short form.

Winners will be invited to a small online festival. The winners of Photo of the Year and Photo Story of the Year will also receive EUR5,000 (US$6,087) each.

Entries must have been published in 2020 in English or with English subtitles.

HIPA seeks photography entries [MENA]

Professional and amateur photographers ages 18 and older can enter this competition.

The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography (HIPA) seeks entries to the 10th edition of its competition, focusing on the theme of "humanity."

The contest has three categories: portfolio (storytelling), general photography and architectural photography.

Photos must not contain any tags, signatures, initials, frame, borders, logos or any other references and/or marks added by the participant.

The organizer will award a total of US$450,000 in cash prizes. In addition to the US$120,000 grand prize, five winners will be chosen from each category and will receive US$5,000 to US$20,000.

The World Teenage Reporting Project open [Worldwide]

Teenage journalists are invited to profile their peers who are champions of tolerance. 

The World Teenage Reporting Project, organized by the Global Youth & News Media, has launched the Tolerance Profile Challenge.

The challenge seeks stories in any format about teenage journalists or worthy adults who teenagers would admire, who have had success in promoting tolerance amid the many differences in the world.

Stories can be in any language, but videos not in English must have subtitles in English. Non-English podcasts must have a transcript or detailed summary in English.

The selected stories will be part of a new World Teenage Reporting Project Showcase.

Earlier this year, the project focused on stories of teens helping during the pandemic.

The Investigative Journalism Foundation accepting entries for Ulanbek Egizbaev Prize [Kyrgyzstan]

Journalists, civil society activists and bloggers cancompete for an award.

The Investigative Journalism Foundation is accepting entries for the Ulanbek Egizbaev Prize for the best journalistic investigation. The contest is named in memory of the investigative journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who died in 2018.

Submissions can be in Kyrgyz or Russian and must have been published or broadcast in 2020.

Winners will receive cash prize of KGS100,000, trophies and diplomas.

Environmental Journalism Grant available [Spain]

Students at Spanish universities can apply for a scholarship.

SIGRE Medicamento y Medio Ambiente and EFEverde, through the Efe Training School, are organizing a new edition of the EFEverde Environmental Journalism Grant.

The program will place a trainee at EFEverde newsroom Jan. 7 to Oct. 6, 2021 in Madrid.

The selected candidate will receive a monthly grant of EUR600 and a mentor in environmental journalism.

Journalism internship program available [US]

Students and recent graduates can apply for this 10-week-internship.

Houston Chronicle is accepting candidates for its 2021 summer internship.

Interns are assigned to metro, business, photo, digital, page design or features departments. They will work in Houston or remotely depending on the pandemic. The internship pays US$600 per week.

 The ideal candidate is fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese or Chinese and has previous internship experience.

The NOOR Foundation is offering one-on-one online mentoring on photography, creativity and storytelling.

Sessions include "Finding creativity in times of confinement" with Sanne De Wilde, "Intimacy of place and the tools of telling" with Tanya Habjouqa, "Building your portfolio" with Bénédicte Kurzen and more. 

The cost is EUR140 (US$166) per session. There are discounts for photographers who cannot afford the tuition.

Journalism fellowship available [Europe]

Journalists from European countries as well as Turkey, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan can apply for a research fellowship in Austria. 

Sponsored by the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM, in German), the Milena Jesenská Fellowship enables journalists who write about culture or societal issues of European relevance to take time out of the newsroom for research projects.

Fellows receive a EUR7,500 stipend and spend three months at IWM in Vienna. Travel grants of up to EUR1,900 can be paid for research trips to neighboring countries.

Applicants must have several years of experience in print, broadcast or online journalism.

Budding journalists can apply for this fellowship in Seattle, Washington.

Cascade Public Media is looking for an emerging journalist fellow with a focus on audience engagement.

The engagement fellow will contribute to the newsroom’s audience strategies, work with  cutting-edge digital journalism tools and may pursue original reporting.

Candidates must have demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers, some experience organizing and managing multiple priorities and in developing and managing projects. 

The full-time fellowship will last six or 12 months starting in January 2021. The salary is US$18.00/hour plus benefits.
