Journalists working on an underreported project in the public interest can apply for funding.

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University (NYU) invites applications for its reporting award. The award supports research and reporting for a significant work of journalism on any medium.

One or several winners will receive up to US$12,500, NYU ID and full online and onsite NYU Bobst Library research and reference privileges, as well as an office at the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, space allowing.

International journalists are welcome to apply, but the resulting work must be in English and must be accepted for publication by a reputable media outlet with a wide circulation.

CRONOGRAF documentary film festival accepting entries [Worldwide]

Filmmakers from around the world can participate in this festival.

The International Documentary Film Festival CRONOGRAF, organized by the OWH Studio, will take place May 22 to 28, 2019 in Chisinau, Moldova,

The festival is accepting works in four sections: a main section – for international documentaries produced between 2017 to 2018; a cadRO section – for films about Romanians and Romanian communities from all over the world; a section dedicated to teenagers; and a section for documentaries about Moldova made by foreign filmmakers.

The winners will receive trophies and cash prizes.

Participation is free, but the festival does not offer any kind of payment for screening the films.

Journalism Fellowships available [Worldwide]

Midcareer journalists covering science, technology, the environment or medicine can apply for a fellowship at MIT.

The Knight Science Journalism Fellowships host international and U.S. journalists for nine months of personalized study, auditing courses at MIT and Harvard, attending lectures and interviewing faculty members.

Fellows receive a US$70,000 stipend plus tuition. Additional benefits include health insurance, research trip stipends, conference stipends and access to MIT and Harvard resources.

Applicants must have English proficiency and at least three years of experience as reporters, writers, editors, producers, illustrators or photojournalists. They may work for newspapers, magazines, television, radio or the web.

Journalism exchange program available [US, Canada, Germany]

Young journalists from the United States, Canada, Germany can apply for this fellowship.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) seeks applications for the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, an exchange program that gives media professionals from the United States, Canada and Germany an opportunity to report from and travel in each other's countries.

The purpose of the program is to increase public knowledge and understanding about the two countries through mass media. Successful applicants will report for their home and host news organizations from across the Atlantic. The next fellowship will run from July 24 to Sept. 30.

Applicants must be print, online or broadcast journalists between 21 and 40 years old. German language proficiency is not required, but it is encouraged. Selected fellows not fluent in German will spend the first two weeks of the fellowship in intensive German language classes.

Each fellow will receive a US$4,000 living stipend and an additional US$1,200 for airfare. The program also covers lodging in Washington for a joint one-week group orientation session in July.

The deadline for German applicants is Jan. 31; for U.S. and Canadian applicants, the deadline is March 1.

Abej/FNP calls for papers on Journalism theories [Brazil]

Journalism professors and students will gather at the 18th National Meeting of Journalism Teachers April 25 to 27, in Paraná.

Organized by the Brazilian Association of Teaching Journalism (Abej/FNPJ, in Portuguese), this year's conference will take place at the State University of Ponta Grossa in partnership with Faculdades Santa Amélia (Secal) Paraná.

The program includes the 14th Cycle of Journalism Research in Teaching and Extension, which invites works on extension activities; teaching ethics and journalism theories; graduate research; laboratory production/electronics; laboratory production/print media; and pedagogical projects and teaching methodologies.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 11.

Banco do Nordeste offers reporting contest on development initiatives [Brazil]

News stories on northeast Brazil are eligible for cash prizes.

Brazil's Banco do Nordeste organizes a competition to stimulate debate and raise awareness on the importance of innovative actions in development, with emphasis on the democratization of credit, economic growth and social inclusion in one of the poorest regions of Brazil.

Stories should have been published or broadcast in 2018 in one of Brazil's nine northeastern states, northern Minas Gerais and northern Espírito Santo.

A total of BRL234,000 will be distributed across one grand prize and winners in print, broadcast, photo and online categories.

Internews accepting applications on data storytelling,gender-responsive budgeting [Iraq]

Journalists interested in data journalism can apply for this initiative.

Internews is accepting applications for the Open Iraq Initiative, which aims to transform public data into citizen engagement for gender equality.

The program involves training and mentoring 40 journalists and women-focused civil society organizations advocates in data storytelling and visualization and gender-responsive budgeting.

The Open Iraq training sessions, story incubators and ongoing mentorship will be conducted over an eight-month period beginning in April 2019 in Iraq.

Participants will be expected to have published locally led media or advocacy content pieces that explore the impact of government spending on gender equality and women empowerment.

Dart awards accepting reports on Trauma, Violence [North America]

Journalists covering trauma and violence for North American outlets are eligible for an award.

The Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma will recognize journalism about the impact of violence, crime, disaster and other traumatic events on individuals, families and communities.

Entries may include breaking news, enterprise reporting, single stories, packages of coverage on a single event, cohesive series, local, regional or national television coverage, long-form documentary and online multimedia packages.

Awards are team prizes honoring all elements involved with reporting a story. Two teams will receive US$5,000 each. Entries must have been published, aired or broadcast in 2018.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2019. There is a US$50 entry fee.
