Thomson Reuters seek interns [Worldwide]

Students or recent graduates with a strong interest in journalism can apply for paid internships.

The Thomson Reuters Journalism Internship program is accepting applications for its 2018 summer cycle. Most internships are in its New York and Washington bureaus, but opportunities may also exist in Toronto, Mexico City and São Paulo, as well as our other Americas offices. Internships last 10 weeks.

The programs are crash courses in business, political and general news reporting. Interns will receive several days of formal training before they start work. Every intern will report to a senior editor and be assigned a journalist mentor who will be available to provide advice and guidance. 

Candidates must have completed at least two years of university, some prior journalism experience, excellent writing and communications skills.

Journalists who are natives of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Australia can apply for these positions.

New adVentures is looking for journalists to join its team in Lisbon, Portugal.

Responsibilities include searching and writing daily news stories related to entertainment, celebrities and lifestyle; sourcing original stories that can be pitched to and placed in different countries; and developing compelling galleries of current celebrity-related news.

Chicas Poderosas hosts New Ventures Lab [Brazil]

Digital media entrepreneurs can participate in this program in São Paulo.

Chicas Poderosas is launching the New Ventures Lab (NVL), a 17-week acceleration program that will provide education, mentoring and access to funding opportunities.

The NVL seeks to support women in the early stages of their independent media businesses. For the first group, six to eight teams will be chosen.

Each team must have at least two participating members and be led by a woman.

The program will consist of in-person and virtual sessions Jan. 29 to May 25, 2018.

Grants available for fisheries Reporting (West Africa)

The deadline is Nov. 13.

Journalists and other expert media practitioners who want to cover stories related to fisheries management in West Africa can apply for grants of up to US$500.

The Earth Journalism Network is inviting applications for a second round of reporting grants to support fisheries and environmental journalism as part of its West Africa Fisheries Journalism Project.

Suggested topics include the impact of overfishing and IUU fishing on coastal communities; the use of destructive fishing practices, bycatch and fish aggregating devices; community-led fisheries management initiatives; poverty reduction and food security through sustainable fisheries; challenges of transboundary management of fisheries and shared stock.

Proposals that focus on new topics or stories that have not been widely covered are preferred. Freelancers and staff from all types of media outlets—both large and small— are encouraged to submit applications.

The deadline is Nov. 13.

Hearst Journalism Awards Program accepting journalism students Applications [US]

Undergraduate journalism students can submit their work.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program provides support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the university level. The program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism and matches the scholarships with grants to the students' schools.

Students must attend one of the following universities to be eligible.

Students may submit their work in five writing, two photojournalism, one radio broadcast, two television broadcast, and four multimedia competitions.

Each competition has more specific categories under it, and each category has a unique deadline. The deadlines will span from October to April.

The winners receive certificates and scholarship checks ranging from US1,000 to US$2,600, with matching grants to their journalism departments.

AP: Vacancy for video journalist [China]

Journalists with experience in television and online video storytelling can apply for this position.

The Associated Press (AP) is hiring a video journalist in Beijing to report across China.

The videojournalist will primarily shoot, write and edit video — including live video — stories for AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms. Extensive traveling will be required.

Candidates must possess advanced individual technical skills in the creation of video content, as well as the ability to work within an all-formats team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news and short- and long-term projects.
